ABI Research: Android taking over the tablet market from iOS
0. phoneArena 27 Sep 2013, 22:03 posted on
According to ABI Research, there has been a change in the global tablet market; the Apple iPad, which has been credited with creating the tablet category with the launch of the OG version in 2010, has "passed the baton to the Android ecosystem," according to the research firm. And there are three reasons why this seems to be the case...

wait till ipad 5 and mini 2 comes out different story right there.. w/only 2 ipads..
3. Daftama (Posts: 562; Member since: 03 Nov 2012)
The problem it's the same stuff... I given them credit one of the only company that can make same model phone every year and sells millions just shows pal don't like change... But eventually they need change won't be long before android take over.. Apple wants your money while Google wants to control the world..

They said that about the ipad mini and iphone 5. Now look at the market share for both. Wait till you say wait for the ipad 8 and mini 5.

You brag about your limited selection of only 2 ipads like it's a good thing.
This is why Anroid is better overall, we have choices.

True. I mean, the only real quality Android tablets out there are Nexus devices and a select number of Samsung and Asus offerings that are separate from the Nexus. That might add up to 9 or 10 relevant tablets that are actually worth something. I guess LG's G Pad 8.3 is nice on paper, but we haven't seen it in actual use. A couple Sony tabs are decent, but even saying that is stretching it.

In my opinion the only good tablets are Microsoft Surface series. :)

If MS could release the pro for $499-599 I'd have one for sure.
I'm a windows guy and would love to see them thrive. Too early for me to adopt.

My Sony Z disagrees, the quality of the Z tablet is impressive.

Doesn't Apple only sell iPad 2 ,4 and iPad Mini? What does Android sell? Oh that's right, Samsung Galaxy 8.0, 10.0 Samsung Note 8.0, Nexus 7, Acer Iconia, Sony, etc. Apple sells well for a company who only sells 3 models, while Android sells a variety of tablets.
8. protozeloz (Posts: 5369; Member since: 16 Sep 2010)
Well for starters Android does not sell tabs, tabs are sold with Android.
Second the same thing was said about phones, guess what? Doesn't work that way, to many consumer android tablets come with added features at the cost or cheaper than the iPad, when someone buys an android tab from... let's say Asus, it stops buying it from Samsung or Acer so android tablets also compete against each other.

Wait till android pc sticks go mainstream. Imagine 2.2ghz and up S800 with 4GB of ram in an android media box
22. Berzerk000 (Posts: 3875; Member since: 26 Jun 2011)
By the time some manufacturer has the guts to attempt to make an Android PC, we'll have 6 core Snapdragon 1200's at 2.5 GHz using Krait 800 (ARM Cortex A57 equivalent) architecture and Adreno 430 GPU. And, since that chip will undoubtedly be 64 bit, might as well stick 6 GB of RAM in there. It'll run Android 5.0 Lollipop which will include a new desktop view in the launcher rather than the traditional phone/tablet interface.
Speculation is fun :)
43. yahoo29 (Posts: 71; Member since: 15 Sep 2012)
Even that time comes I think Android can't really battle Windows OS coz WOS will evolve too and many people will still prefer Intel Chipsets, nVidia Graphics Card and Windows OS will support 128 bit when that time comes.
52. aries.phills (Posts: 132; Member since: 17 May 2011)
I like that. Speculation is fun and free with zero charge. Now, all we need is a visionery company like samsung to bring our wildest speculations to reality.

Devices like an android media box can be great for casual emulator gaming and games on the playstore. Throw in a fan to keep that cpu cool for good measure. Im 100% sure you can put massive hardware in a media box and not have to worry about any battery life since they run off a power plug. Just image the benchmark scores!

It just had tp be the Android universe against Cupertino, niceee
11. darkkjedii (Posts: 10102; Member since: 05 Feb 2011)
This just shows how much room there is in the tablet market. All these guys are doing well, apple followed by Samsung simply dominate. People are also waiting for the new iPads to release, and that accounts for a slowdown too. This happens every year with apple, then BAM! New stuff comes out like the 5S, and records are set.
33. tedkord (Posts: 4275; Member since: 17 Jun 2009)
Record was only tied this year, and it took 2 new iPhone models to equal the presales of the v Galaxy S4.
39. bucky (Posts: 1291; Member since: 30 Sep 2009)
It beat sgs4 sales in the first weekend....
51. darkkjedii (Posts: 10102; Member since: 05 Feb 2011)
Ted I'm not gonna get into who beat who, and what it took to beat what. I really don't care about that stuff bro, every device maker will suffer a slowdown as people wait for the new device to drop, then sales will explode. When the new iPads drop, apples iPad sales will explode. Will they beat android? Don't know don't care, all I know is I'm getting that gold mini 2, and a full size for my wife. And when I said records I meant apples 5S vs 5, not getting into a flamer bro. Hope all is well...
12. Immolate (Posts: 270; Member since: 17 Jun 2011)
And when Samsung sells more than Apple, iPhone Arena will say all that matters is that Apple is the king of tablet profits over any other manufacturer. Move the goalposts much?
Apple should continue to be a strong player in the over-priced, "look-at-me" tablet market, but economic reality can only be resisted for a time.
13. JMartin22 (Posts: 712; Member since: 30 Apr 2013)
The question is, are they taking away Apple customers or just targeting people whom are neither Apple customers or owners getting a tablet for the first time.
19. Whateverman (Posts: 3187; Member since: 17 May 2009)
Excellent point! Honestly, I think they are hitting a lot more of those customers who would like a tablet, but think $500 is just way too much to get their feet wet. But a $100-$300 tablet sounds more feasible. And since Apple has no interest in the entry level market, there is a huge chunk of the population they're ignoring. Not to mention the techies who are willing to spend the money but want to tinker around with the OS. Android tablets and phones have a much broader range devices which appeals to many more consumers. And it's only going to get worse as Android tablets get better.

Apples materials are premium made with aluminum
And androids made with rough plastic
18. xfire99 (Posts: 412; Member since: 14 Mar 2012)
Hmm...so iphone 5C isnt made of plastic colorful materials? *lol*
24. ady_lad (Posts: 73; Member since: 17 Jul 2013)
Really sunshine? How about premium handsets like HTC One? Is iPhone any better than an HTC One? And you get better value for money with Android, Apple is a rip-off. How about the plastic-fantastic 5C?
28. softfurryanus (banned) (Posts: 232; Member since: 09 Jul 2013)
Doesn't mean much, I for one went from an ipad 2 to a nexus 10 and the nexus 10 feels no more, or less cheap.
34. tedkord (Posts: 4275; Member since: 17 Jun 2009)
Ah yes, they premium soft, bendable 80 cents per pound Potemkin material.
44. yahoo29 (Posts: 71; Member since: 15 Sep 2012)
And Aluminum is the cheapest metal, I wish I could see an Magnesium Alloy or Titanium Alloy phone. So dont tell me that aluminum is premium coz in my house my bed is made of aluminum + hard metal.
45. werthedroids (Posts: 60; Member since: 15 Sep 2013)
yeah, right. what about the asus infiniy, prime, htc one, nexus 4, xperia z1 etcetera. And don't pretend Apple isn't selling cheap glossy plastic junk like the iPhone 5Cheap. You're just angry cuz android is apple kicking butt
16. Rongocook (Posts: 76; Member since: 20 Sep 2013)
I doubt ipad customers will move to android because ipad is the best when it comes to tablet category, whether of apps or daily usage
23. Berzerk000 (Posts: 3875; Member since: 26 Jun 2011)
For now at least. Now that many studies are showing that Android tablets are overtaking the iPad, developers will be more inclined to make tablet apps for Android. Wait maybe 2 more years and Android will be on par with the iPad in terms of optimized apps. 7" Android tablets are already pretty decent when it comes to apps, it's mainly just the 10" space that needs to be filled.
25. ady_lad (Posts: 73; Member since: 17 Jul 2013)
I will take a Surface Win8 any day of the year mate...
30. PhoneArenaUser (Posts: 5457; Member since: 05 Aug 2011)
Microsoft Surface are the best tablets.
35. tedkord (Posts: 4275; Member since: 17 Jun 2009)
That's what they said about smartphones, yet I personally know several who switched from the iPhone to Android after years of owning iPhones.
46. werthedroids (Posts: 60; Member since: 15 Sep 2013)
No, iPad customers won't switch to Android cuz they're too stupid to use it.
17. xfire99 (Posts: 412; Member since: 14 Mar 2012)
Just matter of time. Android evolves every new model/version of OS and iOS/models standing still and nothing new for each release.
Apple trying to catch up with new colorful/plastic designs. Soon we will see new colorful ipads with plastic designs too and something that Apples users have bashing on android users.
27. AKumar47 (Posts: 48; Member since: 11 Sep 2013)
EXPERIENCE IS PRICELESS, haha! I have all types of OSes, but for me, apple is still on top... specs are primarily about numbers, but the OS that operates the specs speaks by itself... specs are very deceiving, haha! beauty and brain must be consider, just like apple...
31. alaahershy (Posts: 34; Member since: 02 Jan 2013)
Of Course this is true, cz there's about 10 brands that use android , and only one that use iOs
isn't Simple PA.
32. protozeloz (Posts: 5369; Member since: 16 Sep 2010)
Those 10 android brands are also competing against each other, people are looking for much more reasonable priced devices AND more functionality
37. Penywyz (banned) (Posts: 255; Member since: 13 Aug 2013)
It doesn't matter who is selling the most Android Tablets, the fact still remains the same. Apple continues to lose market share Quarterly, and they are still fighting a battle that they are obviously losing to Google.
40. Yes-Sir (banned) (Posts: 58; Member since: 16 Sep 2013)
iPad 1,2,3,4,5 they are all the same!
Jesus Christ buying the same product over and over again! How sick!
Wait, wait, hold on.... It's all a show off, pose, juxtopose!
Dear "GOD" help is needed upon them!
The new SS Tab will revolutionise the Tab industry!
41. papss (unregistered)
Still there is a huge issue on play store for tablets. they are pretty weak in the tablet app area.. Until they grow I probable won't be buying a android tablet. I think SS knows this too.. They brought their note phone series to fill that gap. Apple is the undisputed king in this area and that's a fact.
42. Penywyz (banned) (Posts: 255; Member since: 13 Aug 2013)
DId you read the article?
"Apple is the undisputed king in this area and that's a fact?"
The article clearly indicates the opposite...
49. papss (unregistered)
Play store IS lacking in true tablet apps.. I'm not talking about tablet sales
48. LiquidGalaxy (Posts: 141; Member since: 03 Jul 2013)
Well yeah, much like myself peoples curiosity will get the better of them and they will try a Galaxy Tab, a Galaxy S4, an Android tablet here, an Android phone there...Then they will almost immediately regret their choice and be pining for the days of their ipad and iPhone...and know I am...
50. Penywyz (banned) (Posts: 255; Member since: 13 Aug 2013)
That's your opinion and one that many will disagree on. I personally love my Galaxy Tab and my Motorola Droid. I carried an iPhone for 3 years and you couldn't pay me to go back to one.
55. Edmund (Posts: 654; Member since: 13 Jul 2012)
I bought one, stupidly thinking the platform has improved since last using it, 2 years ago. Three months on, I can't wait to use this POS as a place-holder for my coffee cup. The next tablet I purchase will definitely be a Microsoft Windows device.
56. DukeX (Posts: 327; Member since: 28 Aug 2013)
Lmfao i refuse to believe you brought an android tablet. All you do is bash android. Oh you stupidly believed the platform improved but anyone who bashes anything acts as if they know everything about it so i find it hard to believe you would waste time with something you already disliked. Im calling bs.
57. Qwerty-keyboard (Posts: 10; Member since: 29 Sep 2013)
apple in tablets they r really giants, in smartphone they are loosing gradually.
58. Tech_Junkie1996 (Posts: 42; Member since: 29 Aug 2013)
My opinion, Apple is no longer the "King" of Tablets because they lack evolution. The only change Apple has made to their tablet line since introducing it in 2010 is the Mini, which is not an awesome device, its more of a mid-ranger, but, did show that Apple could have innovations. Now that they've done that, I don't see Apple going anywhere in the next few years; the last thing they could think of was the Mini. Eventually, they will fall to 2nd place in terms of OS. Now, as far a Android being the number 1 platform, think about this. Android is placed on 1000's of devices. There are brands on almost every continent that make Android Tablets. Sure, they are not excellent devices, in fact, most of them are terrible, but, they still have strength in number and diversification. There are so many tablets available using Android that you'll be hard pressed to find one that doesn't meet your wants and/needs. And, as far as the premiere Android tablet seller, Samsung, I don't think they'll overtake Apple for a while. Samsung's worthy tablet series is the Note series. The Tab series is a mid-range tablet. That's it.
