A reason why the iPhone display may stay at 3.5"

0. phoneArena 31 Oct 2011, 19:58 posted on

Many complain that the iPhone display needs to get bigger, but there is a very specific Steve Jobsian reason why the display is 3.5 inches, and it's a reason why the phone may stay that way...

All these remarks about Apple being last year or two years ago and them being left behind and being out sold by the massive amounts of different Android handsets by the massive amount of different makers shines its own light. I am by no means An Apple iPhone fan. It is just funny that for the iPhone to be so bad that people keep buying it. They will never out sell so many different Androids phones by so many different makers around the world. Still Android cant kill Apple off. I used an iPhone this past weekend the iPhone 4 and I like the screen size and the screen is beautiful. I dont have girlie hands I am 6 foot plus in height and weigh well over 270 and can grab a basketball on the run dribbling to give you an idea. I will not give my EVO up though. iPhone will have to go LTE to really make me think about it.

indeed. Why does Apple insist on a one size fit all approach for their phones? They have a lot of various models of PCs and music players, everything from the mac mini to mac pro, and their music players everything from the Ipod Shuffle to the Ipod touch. Here's hoping next year they will at least have one other phone model with a larger screen. Even if that's the only difference to the standard 3.5 inch model, there will be a lot of people that want it. There may be demand for a smaller size too, but small sized smartphones tend to sell poorly.

Well... I'm ecstatic that they were dumb enough to not consider that. I dislike Apple. Too authoritarian and controlling for my taste.

"In fact, some may find it to be very annoying or unwieldy."

I have no problem with a 4.5 inch screen phone. I can wield it perfectly and I can also type the fastest on it without screwing up.

Also, who says that? I mean these articles post these opinions they say are by ordinary people but there is no poll showing that. In fact, the poll that PA did have showed overwhelming majority of people preferred over 4 inch screen phones.

Or maybe they don't have a problem using both hands? What a novel concept.

Or the fact that since you can move icons and widgets around anywhere you want on the screen unlike the iphone which just tiles everything for you. All of my icons are at the bottom in easy reach and informational widgets that need no interactions are kept at the top. With this set up I actually have a easier time operating a 4.3" phone than I did the iphone.

That's not to say the iphone was difficult, just for my own usage pattern being able to move icons freely around is a big plus.

That's cool and all, but why not make an iPhone XL or something? One size fits all just doesn't work when it comes to cellphones. And if this were the case, why even bother making the iPad? Just doesn't seem like an exceptable reason why you would deny what soooo many people are going to other OEMs to get.

Apple is all about focus, and having as few models as possible of its products. If Apple made an iPhone XL, it would have to make an iPhone Mini for those were below average hands as well.

That sounds like a plan. Different size phones for users with different size hands! Let's get a mini, a regular, a large and extra large.

Not gonna happen. That's not Apple's MO. That would be like asking Google to close Android and only make Android phones with Motorola exclusively.

*ahem* according to your cowriters on this website, the relationship between Google and Android OEMs is fragile, on the verge of collapse, and any day now Google will destroy that relationship entirely by treating Motorola preferentially.

There's about a 98% probability that they're COMPLETELY f**kING WRONG, of course, but that doesn't stop them from mentioning it every time they can.

I guess everyone really believes that if they get Moto that they wont give Moto preference. Yeah and global warming isnt true.

You know what Hitler said... Make the lie big and make it simple. If you mention it enough, people will start to believe it. The gullible, the uninformed, and the ignorant, of course, along with the prejudiced.

What apple wants to do is to create one really good product instead of a bunch of medocre ones. Heck i have small hands and a 4 inch screen is as far as i would like to comfortably go. Anything in the 3.5to4 range works for me. I hope apple will come out with two products the 4gs and 5. The 4gs just a 4s with lte and the 5 is the one they put effort into. You have to remeber apple has to create the os and phone and they dont have time to create a billion phones and improve the OS

"You have to remeber apple has to create the os and phone and they dont have time to create a billion phones and improve the OS"

This is a bogus statement. If anything, Apple is MORE capable of improving the OS and hardware (HW) at the same time beCAUSE they have control of both. Apple is not just 1 person...either working on just OS or just HW. Apple has separate engineering teams that closely collaborate to improve and create their OS and HW.

Yes, they do. You're speaking of Apple as if it's just one single person working under it when it's actually a whole corporation. They could go and hire more people. They certainly have the money to do so. But why don't they?

the mini is for the midgets or kids
the regular for the females
the large is for the men
and
the extra large is for the body builders

I haven't broke out my protractor yet ,, but that mock up should be exactly the same size of the green arc? The mock-up of the green arc on the iphone is taller isn't it? That's just false like iphone and galaxy s2 were photoshopped to be same size for the German court

Dang, you're right on that one. A quick check in GIMP and those arcs are definitely not equal.
