6-way blind camera comparison: the results

0. phoneArena 29 Mar 2013, 11:02 posted on

Okay, guys, teasing time is over. Today we're revealing the results from our latest blind camera comparison, as well as the identities of all the smartphones that were used. A big "thank you" goes to everyone who cast their vote, and a 5 internets prize goes to those eagle-eyed few who named the handsets correctly in the comments! Perhaps you're all wondering which device we attached the mysterious Phone #4 moniker to. After all, that's the smartphone that got most of you guys' votes – in all three categories, for that matter...

u r more brainwashed,,
is it really hard to accept that ur favor8 device lost the battle. poor fanboy

WE JUST TELL WHAT WE SEE.. even in youtube, most commented that phone1, 4 and 5 are the best
and un4tunately for you, these are galaxy s3, ip5 and galaxy s4

cant u just deliver urself to the real world?

WINNING can be addressed in different ways..
yeah overall ip5 won, but that doesnt remove the fact that s4 did a great job to throw other smartphones :)

and other manufacturer's fans are trying their best to hide their disappointment... no matter what happen galaxy s3 and s4 outperformed ur favor8 device..,,

i hate iphone, but i dont hate their camera..

htc, sony and other fans are d most blind,, even after reading a review, they will say the different side of the result.. and even calling the review bias..

now, comment #43 didnt want to say that iphone and s4 are both 1st placers,, she just wanna emphasized that the both phones have the best shots above d rest!

Got them all right except for #5 which I didn't know what it was, but I suspected it was the S5. Still shocked about video quality, although I'm convinced everybody knew what was what and voted for what they wanted to see win.

I expected the iPhone to be #4... Apple is very focused on visuals and have put together a great camera. But, damn, I thought for sure #5 was going to be the Lumia 920 or HTC One.

Not sure if it's a head-shaking "tsk tsk tsk" to them for scoring lower, or a kudos to Samsung for taking the 2nd and 3rd spots.

I would rather see the UNCROP images unalter. Looking through the files, the claimed HTC-ONE photo is CROP 1920x1425 unlike the other images of 1920x1440. Furthermore, there is also no evidence proving those images are from their respected phones. PA should post originals so the users can see the full depth of field. Included setting used woud be nice since almost everyone would use AUTO. At least this review wasnt by RAY S...lol

I dont have trust in this website . This comparison are very useless because a lot of us know that you " workers " from this website are payd to put samsung and apple in the front of the world . And i never seen in my life a picture like you said " from lumia 920 " like that ... I know and i tested lumia 920 and he do greats pictures even with just a bit bit light . So , how the fk you tested that camera .... ? Maybe with a hand in your pants ....

so your saying... u would only believe the comparison if it was your 'favourite' phone that comes first?

Maybe PA should hire you to do these kind of test.

shut up, this was a blind test, whatever you think on the shots taken and sure a professional could get more out of all these phones. this proves that when looking at these photo's the iphone takes the more appealing shots........not best as all with come top in certain conditions etc

give credit, to most people the iphones photo's attract them more, spare the saturated colours etc it still doesnt take away they are appealing

Exactly! Most people see the nice colors in a photo and automatically thinks its the best photo! the average joe does not look at Dynamic Range, Detail etc

I honestly liked how the S4 was far less saturated and a bit more exposed..so for me it was the top pick, but Apple's definitely a spectacular camera. I'm happy they did this blind test, it was hilarious and should HTC trolls the hell up

Gotta hand it to Iphone. If I was looking for camera as my most important feature, I'd get it.

Good to see the Galaxy phones hold up well. The camera on my S3 is plenty good and the S4 is really close in quality to the Iphone.

Interesting results, but Phone Arena are not photographic experts by any stretch of the imagination. So, how about hiring a real photographer to do the tests? Scott Kelby to the rescue ;o)

Here's another thought as well: it's entirely possible that people are actually choosing images that seem familiar to the pictures they take and display from the devices that they currently own. The auto settings used for these tests will probably bear a likeness in terms of contrast and brightness, and that could explain why popular devices like the iPhone5 received more votes. It's just a theory, but perhaps the audience was already trained to recognize the results, and simply choose what they already own...
