5.25-inch QHD display for Samsung's Galaxy S5 now in production?

The new screen for the Galaxy S5 reportedly uses the same diamond PenTile pixel arrangement seen on the Galaxy S4 and Note 3...

Keep increasing the screen size, until customers throw it back on their face...

Galaxy S4 had smaller chassis than GS3 inspite of the bigger screen size.
Do some research !

They can't get much smaller than the Galaxy S4, unless they get rid of those physical buttons.

i like those physical buttons
btw merry christmas everyone

merry christmas dude! what companies need to do is make a freaking phone with a battery that will last at least 2 days, who da fcuk needs a 500 ppi screen ? i say keep phones with 1080p 5 inch panels but work on improving brightness, colour reproduction and viewing angles thats it. improve the camera cuz thats actually needed i love taking pics so i need a good camera like the 1020. lastly but most importantly work on graphics and battery, I'm not about to keep a qhd 6 inch phone if it dosent hold a charge for at least 1 day of heavy usage . MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE

Still a little bezel left And this is only .25 inch bigger than the GS4 screen.

Just because the phone is the same size with a bigger screen does not mean it is just as manageable. Your fingers still have to stretch further to reach keys. Leave huge screens for the note series.
31. Taters (Posts: 3653; Member since: 28 Jan 2013)
Only if the UI is the same. If the UI strictly only uses say 4 inches of the screen and video and pictures use 5.25, how is that a drawback?
Heck, since this is AMOLED, Samsung can technically allow you to switch screen sizes if they wanted too. You just make the smart window screen bigger than 2.5 inches. They can through software do anywhere from 3.5 inches to 5.25 and since the borders are pure blacks , the screen not being used would just look like bezels.
Lots of innovative ways they can play with and everyone would accept it bar the close minded inviduals.

FALSE. The present Galaxy S 4 screen is 5", this new screen is 5.25. .25 is not that much larger in size. In fact if you looked at them side by side they would appear exactly the same size.
Don't you have a ruler? Take a piece of paper and draw a rectangle that is 5" from corner to corner and then do one that is 5.25. In fcat you don't even have to draw a full rectangle. Just draw 2 right angles and you will see it isn't that much bigger.
This also means that the 5.25" screen could fit inside the S4's housing if you drop some bezel.
Did you not go to school?

very true... all you have to do is add about 1/10th of an inch both horizontally and vertically...that's not very much. They could easily do that by cutting the 2 side bezels each in half from the s4 and then .05 inches from the top and .05 from the bottom.
those are just approxmiate numbers though

That day will come for everyone including Apple. 10 years from now I doubt that Apple will be selling a 4.5" smart phone; that's a lot of "s" models in the next 10 years.
I believe that "foldable" screened devices that transform from 4.5" to double it's size will be a reality in less than 4 years. Samsung has already showed us a tech demo of this. Imagine a phone the size of a iPhone 5 that fits into your pockets and transforms into the size of a Note 3 (if you wanted to). That's a win win for the small and large phone crowd. I see Android being the first to do this not Apple. That 2560x1440 resolution may look crazy today but may not be a enough in the future.

Half of the consumers like big screens.

Can they make a Stealth Black version of Note 3?? I mean that the area around the screen, the border of the screen and the screen should be of the exact same shade of black resulting in a phon
e that looks like it doesn't have a screen (when it's turned off). It would be really awesome.
42. torr310 (Posts: 477; Member since: 27 Oct 2011)
5" is enough...my pockets don't get 0.25" bigger.
To get larger screens, there are the Note Series.

Stupidity must have been handed out at the front of the line today.

why again? why not fullHD RGB ? epic fail. wait z2, m8 and g3
14. maccess (Posts: 633; Member since: 16 Jan 2013)
pentile or not.. it's freakin 559.47 ppi!! please stop whining.. you won't see any dot with your naked eye..
19. AppleHateBoy (unregistered)
" you won't see any dot with your naked eye.. because the GPU would crash trying to render the UI at such high resolution".
35. Shatter (Posts: 2036; Member since: 29 May 2013)
No, it wouldn't crash. You will see worse FPS in games and it probably won't be much better than the S4 for gaming even if its like 2x the power of the a7 gpu.
37. maccess (Posts: 633; Member since: 16 Jan 2013)
So you think you know better than samsung about making a high end phone?? Well i'm sorry.. i didn't know you're steve job..
10. PootisMan (Posts: 204; Member since: 02 Aug 2013)
I have big hands, but I am pretty sure that eventually displays on smartphones will get so damn big that it would render it almost impractical to even use with one hand. I really hope manufactureres stop increasing the size of the display and focus on the quality and better optimize the panel for increased efficiency.

We all want a 100" screen that fits easily in our pocket and that doesn't eclipse our head when we talk into it. Companies like Samsung will continue to conservatively push the screen size envelope until they feel they've gone as big as they can without hurting sales. Notice how the Note screen gets a bit bigger every year without actually increasing the handset size? Once the phone is basically all screen, perhaps the next step beyond the G2, they'll stop and look for other ways to differentiate. There is a practical limit. You have to be able to hold a phone with one hand, put it in a pocket, and it needs to be sturdy enough to withstand everyday life. That Z Ultra I think goes over a top a bit. It's so huge and thin that it won't fit in every pocket, and when it does fit you'll have to be careful how you sit. You can hold it in one hand however.

Don't use QHD for higher than 1080p Resolutions please, we already have qHD for 960x540.
22. Bishop_99 (Posts: 63; Member since: 04 Dec 2013)
Well it is accurate, unlike calling it 2k. They can also call it WQHD, but QHD is accurate. The difference between qHD is that it's a quarter size of HD will QHD refers to Quadruple the resolution of 1280x720.... So QHD is perfectly fine.

I hope they will improve ui and make it fast and clean. other thing isthe battery surely... and last thing good exterior design other things are not important so much for me
25. taikucing (unregistered)
still prefer Vivo Xplay 3S with its beautiful metal chassis & beautiful UI.
36. Shatter (Posts: 2036; Member since: 29 May 2013)
The S5 will most likely be metal after all the backlash over plastic. Unlike other OEMs (HTC) Samsung tends to listen to what customers want.
26. davenycept (Posts: 186; Member since: 03 Jul 2012)
All that is fine.. what I mainly want is fast, durable, and efficient..then I'm good
28. phonemonkey (Posts: 168; Member since: 13 Feb 2012)
I love my Note 3
If the S4 goes 5.25 I would stay with my 5.7, unless the note 3 gets physically bigger.
The S-Pen is a really cool feature;
I love to let kids draw on it, they think im the coolest adult :D
I had the s4, loved it.
But the apple design is Like a Cadillac compared to the Galaxy phones.
Their Metals are much more luxurious than the plastics and "leather" on the back of the note 3...
Samsung needs to step their exterior design game up
33. Jklaz (Posts: 125; Member since: 01 Jul 2013)
Cadillac was a good brand comparison. Nice exterior but you'll be dissatisfied with the performance!

Samsung needs to stop trying to completely push the tech envelope and improve their core user experience first. Screens are into a territory where the naked eye simply cannot see the difference. They're pushing more pixels just for the sake of doing so, rather than for everyday benefit.
Their software is bloated and out of date in terms of modern aesthetics. Their features are very hit and miss, and often come half baked. They really need to work on the software side and improve that core experience. The tech race is nice and all, but it isn't necessarily making better devices for everyday use. Their Note line is overtaking their flagship Galaxy S line in terms of productivity and use. They need to rethink their strategy here.
39. Taters (Posts: 3653; Member since: 28 Jan 2013)
That's the entire point of Android. If you want closed off software that can run on single cores you can buy wp8 or iOS.
The entire point of Android is to throw everything at the software and see how much a quad core 2.8 GHz can handle before slowing down. Otherwise we might as well just stick with 32 bit and dual core forever.
Someone has to make use of the tech and Samsung intends to it seems.

why don't they keep on that 5 " screen? Duh?

Prepping for curved devices with 6" displays.

i have a kyocera rise which is a crappy phone, ive had it for a year now, service is ok i pay $29/month and i have unlimited everything. should i switch to a much better different for such as s4 nexus 5, htc one etc or wait till s5?
41. TruPatriot (Posts: 92; Member since: 27 May 2013)
Very happy that the screen will only be .25 inches smaller than the Note 2.
If the Note 3 was Triband for Sprint I'd have that already.
45. TechieXP1969 (Posts: 801; Member since: 25 Sep 2013)
Great. Since the Note 4 will follow later, that means since it is the larger sibling to the "S", that means the Note 4 will also get this screen and the same 16MP camera. I guess it won't be too hard to give up my Note 3.
46. jamesedward318 (Posts: 99; Member since: 25 Dec 2010)
I'm sorry but all these big @$$ screens are getting to be a bit much. The fact that Sammy chose to not go all excessive on the screen size means something but not much. I think this is why several Apple users inclduing myself have stuck with the iPhone. I have owned a GS4 and a Note3 and have taken them all back because of the size. I don't have massively large hands but I dont have small hands either. I love the features on Android devices but by the time one comes out with an acceptable size screen for me Apple will have caught up already.
