$400 million in legal fees later, Apple and Samsung reportedly discussing patent settlement

0. phoneArena posted on 30 Mar 2012, 05:15

Bloomberg reports that representatives from Apple and Samsung have recently met to discuss possible cross-licensing of patents and settlement of the legal war that has been waging between the two for a while now. Similar discussions were carried out in 2010, but, with Steve Jobs at the helm, Samsung decided to walk away and take its chances in court...

What was a waste of money for nothing on both side.

Go Apple! Do not step back an inch! Everybody who uses other company's technology and makes a profit of it, without paying to the very same company, must pay eventually. Thiefs are thiefs, even if they are called, Shamsung, Hasus or whatever.

Make sure you add Apple to the top of that list of theifs..."Good artists copy, great artists steal"..."I (Steve Jobs) have always been shameless about stealing great ideas." What a f**king phony.

@ Daniel P: Well written especially "Like getting more than a day of battery life from our smartphones, for example" part.
I wish this crappy war ends and the real healthy competition begin which would be good both for the companies ans consumers, a win-win.

This will be a good move for both sides. Hopefully this patent war ends. +1 for innovation!

I will be glad to see them finally settle, although Sammy could have, and should have, been more reasonable in 2010, and this could have been avoided. It will be interesting, going forward, to see if there are any collaborations between the two.

14. theBankRobber posted on 30 Mar 2012, 09:34

Why settle if you strongly believe you didn't do anything wrong. You think Apple would have settled with some of the patent lawsuits they recent lost against Motorola?

13. speckledapple posted on 30 Mar 2012, 09:30

And after this large waste of money, a settlement can be reached again. They really could have kep this out of the courts if they did this before.

If only half of Samsung's money was spent for right...we had complete chance of having Exynos 5xxx in SGS3!

And just like the engorged leech, the lawyers slowly settle back down... until some other unsuspecting prey braves crossing the waters of litigation.

Lawyers must be very upset at this news. There goes their cash cow.

$400 millions is nothing. it's about pride, it's about pride. i say let sue them, sue your enemies, sue your bosses, sue your neighbors, sue your girlfriends, sue your wife, your kids, sue them all!

Hopefully this is the end of these lawsuits. As more innovation comes from both companies...just let the consumer decide, not the courts.

Every iPhone has outsold the previous version, it set sales records on Verizon and Sprint. Apple....learn to share that mobile pie...

All those saying the Galaxy S 1and 2 are copies of the iPhone.....please actually spend time with the phones. After the home screen and icons....they are totally different phones. Even the hardware buttons are different. Not that one button, I mean the volume rockers and power buttons. The iPhone even has a mute button...which IMO is a waste.

I think the responsible thing that both company's should do is retain the services of an independent legal auditing company. This type of company has the expertise to review all the legal fees and expense documentation in order to ascertain is they are in compliance with the company billing guidelines. All operational and financial aspects of both of these company's are subject to some type of oversight why not the legal department. I have never quite understood why most legal departments are exempt from virtually any type of oversight when it comes to accountability for outside legal expenses. My company has been retained by many CG's but mostly by CEO's , CFO's and COO's all corporate officers who are responsible to the shareholders of their respective companies should all collectively work together the assure that all their outside law firms are in full compliance with their billing guidelines. The bottom line it is simply the right thing to do and te sooner he better.
