Some 250 BlackBerry employees working at the company's testing facility in Waterloo were laid off on Tuesday and the news was confirmed by the manufacturer on Wednesday; those let go had been working at the new products testing area, working on manufacturing and R&D. The company said that it had to let the 250 go in order to correctly scale for what it called "new opportunities"...

Should always trim fat from top end first IMO.

That's how businesses should work.
It's not the employees that are messing up, it's the upper management that sit on money and they don't know what to do.

And yet when a company cuts 2,000 line workers or shuts down entire factories, the stock price increases. And the CEO, who holds hefty stock options, stands to benefit.

It may not be a sure sign, but cutting R&D staff is not a good sign of future health.

What exactly is the point of saying "I hate BB"? in that sentence? It has absolutely nothing to do with your statement of the status of the company. Thats like saying "i love Android but it might rain today".

What reason do you have for hating BB?

It looks like Blackberry are really struggling to find a market for their new BB10 OS, which is a shame since it is otherwise healthy competition to the industry stalwarts. It really does seem like the smartphone market is only big enough for a couple of big players since even Microsoft is struggling to gain traction. BB might end up leaving the hardware game at this rate and becoming just a software and services company. It'll be a sad day for the industry if and when that happens.

It's a shame, I had the Z10 for about a week. I loved the phone but the app selection (or lack there of) is a problem. The disastrous quarterly results that BB just released probably wont motivate developers either. I traded the phone in for a Galaxy S4 while I was still in the T Mobile grace period.

I just find it curious that you would trade a Z10 for an S4. If you liked the smoothness of BB10, TouchWiz isn't the way I would've gone. It seems like people just "default" to the Galaxy S line.

no good news from bb lately. They canĀ“t afford takin the same path as Nokia. Nokia has ms behind them. Bb has nothing. Releasing a10 with such specification is another nail to their coffin.
