0. phoneArena 22 Jul 2012, 00:22 posted on

While the 8GB model of the Google Nexus 7 is still available from the Google Play Store, the 16GB variant has been sold out and is listed as 'coming soon'; most potential buyers of the device favor the 16GB model because of the lack of a microSD slot on the tablet...

Congrats to Google and Asus. This will soon become the 2nd best selling tablet on the market. (unfortunately I don't see it dethroning the iPad)

n7 is not to dethrone the ipad, at least not directly. i think n7's mission is to build the foundation for future android tablets by creating a strong app portfolio adapted to tablets. N7 also set the standard as up to now Android tablets are inadequate in quality and extravagant in price.

I know it's marketed toward the budget tablet consumer, but with a Tegra 3 processor, Jelly Bean and an HD screen the Nexus 7 is a pretty high-end tablet.

I have an iPad 3 so I'm not looking to spend anymore money on tablets for now, but if I was I'd grab the N7. My boy has one, and that thing is sweet, and solid I love it. I do wish it had a rear camera though, as I'm one of the few geeks that use tablets for pics n vids. As an iPad user I highly recommend the N7. Great piece of hardware.

That's why in Vietnam there are many small company importing Nexus 7 with 3 waiting-weeks and sell at the price 290USD for 8GB and 350USD for 16GB and all out of stock already :((

This just proves that this would fly off the shelves if they just added an sd slot, even for a 250$ price.
Stupid Google and their no-memory expansion stubborness!-.-

LOL...Dude, Google is not that stupid. They just want to sell 16GB versions more as those have higher profit margins - something they learned from Apple. An 8 GB memory card costs around $10 and no one would pay the extra $50 for the 16 GB version if there was an 8GB with microsd.

I see, so you're an idiot.
The thing is - an 8gb flash memory plus an empty sd slot is cheaper to produce than a 16gb flash memory. It would give even more profit margin at the same asking price.
Now I ask you, if both are $250, which option would you buy?

To me, it's a no brainer.

The reason why google doesn't include sd slots in their products is supposedly because they want optimal performance, and also to emphasize the cloud cr!p.

Since low quality sd card can slow down the system considerably. But that was the issue a year or two ago, now with quad core and JB, it should be negligible.

N7 are selling at cost b-c Google wants people to use their cloud based service on the tablet. With limited storage people will have more reasons to use the cloud, Making profits directly from selling N7 is not Google's intention.

WTF?
Why am I thumbed down without any counter argument?
Or the android trolls just thumb down everything with even the slightest criticism towards Google.
The ironic thing is I love google and android and want the best possible success for both.

I agree that 8 GB with SD slot for $250 would still be a great buy. But Google definitely wants to place N7 against Kindle - so $200 price tag probably makes more sense to repeat/pass the success kindle had.

..and my point was that, given that the demand for 250$ model apparently far exceeds the cheaper variant, they were wrong.
People are very willing to pay more for more memory.
And imo, an sd slot is a better solution than adding extra 8gigs.
Adds a lot of value to this otherwise excellent product.

Besides..kindle fire is nothing. Just check how depleted its sales are. A petty million per quarter.

I see your point. storage limit keeps me away from Nexus 7 as I experienced the same thing with Kindle Fire but as we all know Nexus devices never have microSD slot :(

ipad costs double and has no expansion either...I don't know how to get short of space on 16 gb? I need to install full of trash and heavy 2gb games from gameloft beside the whole music collection that I keep anyway on the phone.

Anyways I remind you that Android is usb compatible...just plug a WD 1 tera hdd and you're done

actually, its a known fact that installing apps and games on memory card makes the phone(or tablet) slow, thats the reason why you will never find memory card on apple products which are known for elegance smoothness and stability, we know that android doesn't give such a good experience, so google is trying its best to make things better and better, if they include a memory card, then their project butter will go in vain,a memory card will make the tablet slower and google doesn't want that, i think they should have made a 32gb 3g version for $299

Wow horrible grammar and I'm pretty sure it costs $500 for the base model. Not to mention that the Tegra 3 kicks the A5X's ass.

i have an ipad and a new nexus 7, i have installed the dark knight game on both and i found out that the ipad version was more elegant richer and smoother but the android version was brighter so i think apple was right that A5x gives 4 times better graphics performance than tegra 3,but i must agree, the tegra 3 never made me feel like i was using a $199 tablet, its a great value for money, but i wish it had a better display and a 32gb 3g version for $299 because the batman game itself sucked up 2gb memory
