Abbreviation for High Speed Downlink Packet Access. It is an enhancement to the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) 3G technology, also known as Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (W-CDMA), standardized by the 3GPP in UMTS Release 5. It is designed to increase the available download speeds by 5 times and more, reaching up to 14 Mbps (million bits per second) in theory. The increase of the downlink speed is achieved by the addition of a new high-speed downlink shared channel as well as by applying different modulation, coding techniques and multiple antennas.
