Base Station

A transmission and reception station in a fixed location, consisting of one or more receive/transmit antenna, microwave dish, and electronic circuitry, used to handle cellular traffic. It serves as a bridge between all mobile users in a cell and connects mobile calls to the mobile switching center. A base station is normally positioned above the area to be covered. Usually 800 MHz base stations are placed about 10-12 km (6-8 miles) apart from each other and 1900 MHz base stations - about 3-4 km (2-2.5 miles), although in high network traffic areas or areas with interference from adjacent buildings and other geographic irregularities they are placed much closer together.
