BMP is a standard Bit-mapped graphic format for Microsoft's Windows operation system. A Bitmapped image is a graphic image stored in a specific arrangement of screen dots, or pixels. The density of the dots is known as resolution and determines the sharpness of the presented image. Images are generally stored with a color depth of 2 (1-bit), 16 (4-bit), 256 (8-bit), 65,536 (16-bit), or 16.7 million (24-bit). There are several types of bitmap graphics such as GIF, JPEG, Photoshop, PCX, TIFF, Macintosh Paint, Microsoft Paint, BMP, PNG,etc. As the BMP format doesn't support compression, BMP files are typically much larger than compressed image file formats for the same image.
