Abbreviation for Advanced Mobile Phone System, which is a 1G (first generation) analogue standard for cellular phone service, operating within the 800 and 900 MHz frequency band. AMPS is used throughout North and South America as well as more than 35 other countries. The first AMPS system in the U.S. was deployed in Chicago in 1983.
