Vodafone unhappy about its stake in Verizon Wireless?

advertisment:
Vodafone's chief executive, Vittorio Colao, isn't sitting around the sidelines anymore watching things go by without any say in the matter of their stake in Verizon Wireless. It seems that he is frustrated that Verizon, which has about 87.7 million customers and took in $58.6 billion in revenue last year, has not come out to show even one paid dividend in four years. Vodafone of course has a major stake in Big Red at 45 percent. Surprisingly at a recent Goldman Sach's media conference in New York, Colao stated that “Verizon Wireless is and has been a good investment.” It's not just Colao who raised ears, but Vodafone's board continues to re-look at the situation – they examine other options “regularly”, but “for the time being we are here.” Vodafone's finance director, Andy Halford, has indicated that Verizon may soon start paying out dividends in late 2011 – hopefully before they start clearing out their $30 billion in debts. Vodafone has been hit hard with the tough economy and the dwindling revenue as consumers cut back on mobile phone calls. They're prone amid this downturn and plan on making some some job cuts in the next couple of months. We'll have to wait and see if they plan on sticking around with their joint venture with Big Red.

WOW this article is complete twisted phone arena. "Vittorio Colao, isn't sitting around the sidelines" and "It seems he is frustrated".

That is absolutely not what the article states. Verizon money wise is doing quite a bit better than Vodafone is doing and like all cellular carriers they have a regular debt because of network investments. Verizon has been paying off there there debt and Vodafone has just not received a dividend.

What a way to twist the story to make it seem like they are upset with Verizon, when they own a 45% stake and can't really loose them since they have been nothing but a cash cow for Vodafone there's nothing "Unhappy" about there stake. They would just also like to receive some dividends. aka Money for it's Stockholders to keep them off there back, since there stock holders aren't seeing it from Vodafone.

This is what I hate about Phone Arena (as a frequent visitor) they jump on every oppertunity to cover anything "iPhone". There opinion of VZW is completely biased, and they openly advertise for Sprint, taking the most irrational angles on pushing Sprint ut Bashing Verizon alll the while...Im going to end up walking away if I keep reading garbage like this...Its turning in to "Cosmo Arena".

Well said Papajay. The only two facts quoted from the article were 1, Vodafone is losing money like everyone else, and 2, they are exploring any option of bringing in money, whether it is selling their share in Verizon or keeping it.

Other things making Vodafone unhappy are the rising unemployment is leading to a slowdown in Blackberry sales, and 2, they lost the rights to sell the iphone in Germany and the UK.

Phonearena, you guys are on thin ice with me. I am also considering not revisiting the site if the obvious VZW-bashing continues.

wow...i have VZW service myself but if you want to get angry then look to the source..(Telegraph.co.uk)....they just report what they pull up....just like any other news service...now I do see from your perspective but any GOOD new service is unbiased-and any site on the web WILL be biased because we are all human and we all have our POV...(point of view)...the objective of looking at this report is not whether they are bashing Big Red....just pull from knowledge you already know and apply it to this and you will reach a more truthfull conclusion...after all, just look at sinfulta's comment...he/she was obviously able to find the real truth in the matter...besides if you look at the URL that this report came FROM then you would notice that it is a European news site.....Hello, ring some bells anybody?
Please tell me that you all know that the UK news service is only in the buisness of making drama anyway.

I would usually agree with you, but like I said I am an Avid visitor of this site, like im talking i have it up DAILY and I check it 3 to 5 times a day while im at work. I ready every article from iPhones to Pre's to Storms and all phone for all providers. I started reviewing this page originally because of the LEAKS on software and NEW phones. Lately its been carrier bashing... because it gets the most "posts" and attention. Its turned into Jerry Springer website...Take one totally biased opinion throw in un-factual information (stated at the top of every article) and get a whole bunch of people pissed. Wammy, youve got a whole bunch of people posting and arguing over the web. The problem I have with that is customers are calling me asking about information on this website, people are confrunting me telling about things they have read on here, which is extremely frustrating to defend when they feel this is a valid source of information. Step it up phone arena...

Prime Example Check Out this Article and see how many problems this caused: Verizon's Touch Pro2 is more expensive than the other carrier's model after 2 years

I remember that article....the funny thing is I do the same you do...and I work for att so I get people complaining about things as similar as this is to you...but i try to look at things objectively and from my point of view I will be honest (this is my OPINION)...i everyone would grow up and use the brain that they have inside their heads and thought before they acted would we even be having this discussion? No we would not...VZW is not the only service provider that is bashed on this website...you should know as well as I that ATT, Sprint, and T-Mobile ALL get bashed...and did anybody smack PA in the face about that? You read all the articles....I dont post unless I either feel that I can poke a little humor or I strongly feal a particular way. And again from one perspective I agree with you...the carrier bashing has to stop...but like anything else in humanity we apparently need drama...lol...anyway objectivly speaking i do believe that people are entitled to their opinion...and as you can see muliple people in the world are only interested in starting a fight, so can this realli b blaimed on PA? It is a valid question and no I havent been on PA as long as you but I do access it as often as you do...and i dont alway look at the devices...I look at the news just like you and i read the posts...which are not place by PA but people like US. So I look at it this way, PA brings us a topic to debate, we debate it, just like any college debate class you will have poeple who can or cannot debate, so its all good to me.

On a side note, dont the best debate topics tend to bring out the strongest emotions in people? Its up to us to show our intelligence or our lack there of.

Yes, but this isnt debatearena or bickerarena, its PHONEarena, and if they dont start reporting on PHONES they will find themselves without any readers.

Oh and in response to you saying PA is simply repeating the information, hows that again? The information and title of this article are completely and totally false.

interesting point...to which i reply (again if you really read my first post) just pull from knowledge you already know and apply it to this and you will reach a more truthfull conclusion....ANY news that is broadcasted is ALWAYS BIASED...its a buisness, and so is this website. So if you dont want to read the site anymore whos to stop you Quem? It always depends on the perspective of the writer AND the reader....try to keep an open mind okay :)

again on a side note here....judgeing from your reply to me then that means you cannot stand 90% of the human population because very rarely does the majority apply themselves....and I agree with you....this world would BE a better place IF people would apply themselves....but again that would involve a dirty four letter word..."work"

Opera Mini is for dumbphones, Opera Mobile is for RIM and WinMo. If the only service you know is vzw, what reference point is there to say Sprint stinks. It must be the price, the all inclusive plans that can be used w/any device from a dumbphone to feature phone to smartphone to RIM at no extra cost, the fact that outside downloads can be done, the reliability or the speed that makes Sprint stink. I am not going to let a commercial dictate my choice in carrier because if that were the case I would with sparse 3G T Mo, unreliable and expensive att or expensive vzw

sorry to tell you but opera mini is for blackberries. mine says "opera mini." well you get what you pay for...and i've told my story before, me and my 5 buddies took a drive from new york to tampa. i have vz and so do three of them. the other has sprint and the other has tmo. and i had service almost all the time, even on the back road saffaries we took lol..i mean have you seen how much money verizon invests on builing new cell sites and maintaining them in specific regions around the country? or how prepared they are for natural disasters, such as hurricanes? in my opinion verizon is the most reliable. now i am happy there is competition in the cell phone industry to expand wireless technology, but all i'm saying is verizon has the best coverage. SPRINT FTW.

ITS EXPENSIVE BECAUSE IT WORKS!!!! Go buy a product from the .99 store (where no one shops BTW) and tell me how long a product will last, than go buy the SAME name brand product where the company has enough money in builing a solid device and tell me how long THAT lasts....Your Cheap, bottom line Louie and your opinion is completely biased on cost alone, not on quality...

I'm keeping score too but as of now it's all noise, I just go to funformobile or 3gforfree for my ringtones, screensavers and games and leave my emails for other stuff. Love that weak "get what you pay for" because I get service everywhere I want it while saving plenty and when a smartphone comes out that appeals to me I won't be paying any extra, can you all say the same with your carrier?

Yeah because FunFor Mobile is restricted from VZW how? Man you are such an idiot...I get you like Sprint, I get that, but you have nothing to say about Verizon thats actually accurate, I follow your posts frequently to see your poisen floating threw the room...Everyone here disagrees with you. Your opinions are biased but have no edge or backbone, you just "say things". Closed Network, Further than ringtones, Its not this, its not that, WHAT IS IT? SAY SOMETHING FACTUAL!!!!! You hate VZW because you work for Sprint. THATS ALL! JUST SAY IT!

I go to MI, IN, TN, GA, KY and NV but based in IL, you blowhards continue with the extremely weak and unmerited network claim to justify the added cost for smartphones with a very restrictive UI to go along with no outside downloads without some silly work around. Best believe if my coverage for voice or data I wouldn't be touting anything but that isn't why I don't like vzw, thier policy that anything you want on the phone has to go thru them at extra cost and how the Premium plan can't be used on any smartphone

That's a huge Sprint specific market, seems like you are trying to discount my experince because now that I do travel, save money and cant get downloads easily from places other than the digital lounge, getitnow for you all, I only go places where Sprint has service. It's rich how just because I called out the red menace I must work for Sprint. I will give vzw credit for having a good network and a few above decent phones but the same can be said for Sprint albeit at a lower price monthly and a higher out the door price. There are plenty of 3rd party sites offering free downloads and until a smartphone that suits me arrives, was the Pre but now I want to wait a little while, Opera Mini on my dumphone is how I contribute here and on other sites which is why I can't jell with vzw's practices. My phone works everywhere I've been with a few hiccups but that's to be expected with any carrier and if you say not with vzw you're lying. Justify vzw ridding themselves of any stand alone unllimited data option while forcing a plan for non=smartphones as the reason why while you all call me out for voicing my opinion and observations as much as you want but it won't change the facts. Verizon is only fooling the drones who are happy payig more for a fabricated reality of a better network and banking thier aquisitions to make them the biggest is reason enough not to change. I get 250M mobile calls for free and my plan already includes unlimited messaging, tv, radio and nav that will easily tranfer to whatever phone they sell, smartphones included, at no additional cost. Can any of the fans here say the same for vzw or even att?

I remeber those billing problems and can attest to those myself, multiple times, but never experienced any getting it corrected. I read vzw is having billing probs too so maybe you are one of the lucky ones not to have it happen to you. When Sprint brought the Everything palns out i was reluctant to change because I would be loosing minutes, 600 to be exact, but after crunching #'s it was worth it and guess what? Since all the sevices I was paying for seperately were bundled, no more billing errors. I will keep the same paln with no additional cost if I were using a Lotus, Exclaim, Pro 200/700, Instinct, Tour, Touch Pro, Pre or even the upcoming Hero. 3 lines at $150 + $21 for ins and $4 for roadside assistance for 1500 landline and 800 # minutes, that same plan on vzw would only be 700 minutes for 2 lines.

I get what I pay for and then some. If vzw is allowing 3rd party downloads directly to the phone it news to me but them not having any stand alone unlimited data optionfor non-smartphones is true and so is the fact that the Connect and Premium plans will not work on any smartphone or RIM device they sell

Don, I think its funny that, although you say its rich how just because you called out the red menace you must work for sprint, you didn't refute the statement. Do you or do you not work for sprint?
