Verizon's HTC Passion is Android version of HD2? This article contains unofficial information.

Remember that picture of a device we called the HTC Dragon that we showed you? Based on the menu key, which looked identical to the one on the Motorola Droid, we said the photos might not be authentic. Now, we have another angle on the whole story. The guys over at the UnLockr did some research and they have come up with the theory that this handset is the HTC Passion, expected to be offered by Verizon. The Passion is powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and is actually the Android version of the highly anticipated HTC HD2. UnLockr explains away the similarities in the menu key between the Droid and the Passion by explaining that Verizon is trying to keep some uniformity among all of its' Android devices. It is not the HTC Desire because that is actually the Verizon branded version of the Android powered HTC Hero. The Passion is the CDMA variant of the Dragon and if it is the Android sister of the phone formerly called "Leo", that would mean a massive 4.3 inch display, unparalleled speed, amazing features and specs, and plenty of drool among Verizon customers.

I have heard directly from VZ that the name of the HTC Android device is going to be the "Predator", and that the device will be launching first week of next month. I am gonna go out on a limb and guess Verizon isnt bullshiting this holiday season and is gonna try and make a serious effort to make some ground on the fruit phone.

yea, sorry bout that. I will say this, the source works for Verizon(corp, not retail), has seen the device, referred to it as the "predator", and said we would see this first week of november.

I will add, that this person is not your typical phone geek, and i was quite taken back when they said "predator", as I myself can only remember seeing that name used for a rumored verizon device 1 other time.

AdamB, you're referring to the phone in this article, or the one we've seen in the Google CEO's hand?

the one in the article. im just speculating, but ive been told Nov 7th is the launch date for the HTC predator and "Sholes". Not sure why still referring to it as the sholes, but it could have something to do with VZW maybe using "droid" as a brand name, and not the actual device name.

Makes you wonder that if...

Storm 2
Curve 2
Droid
HTC Desire
HTC Passion/Predator

... are all coming out late Oct/early Nov... Why is there such secrecy and why would VZW pump the droid over all the others? Seems like the Predator/Passion would be the device they would hype... Maybe it will be expensive or something.

Seems like the Android phones are sort of stepping on each other...

Don't forget the Omnia 2 is supposed to come out mid-end of November as well... I heard something rediculous like 16 new smartphone devices in the 4th quarter but we will see if any of that is true... With VZW's track record of being rediculously slow at releasing phones due to intensive network testing, i don't see that sort of thing happening. Unless they are keeping everything hush-hush from the people who typical leak info to these sites... They must not like their jobs that much because leaking proprietary info is grounds for a law suit.

Verizon is supposed to unveil around 12 phones before the end of the year. several of those being android based. i spoke with a friend of mine that is a verizon rep (not the best source) but she said that she was in a product class last week and she got the chance to test 4 new devices. none of them had names on them. they also were unable to converse with each other in speculation on which device belonged to what company. she did describe some of the phones to me. one of them is definitely the motorola droid. even though she did say it wasnt great and it kept crashing every few minutes. some of the names that have popped up lately are correct. i did read somewhere that "droid" per say is not necessarily the name of one phone but a whole line of phones coming from verizon. the unveiling of whatever it is will be from 11:30 to 4:30 eastern time in new york city at the W hotel. i am looking forward to it to say the least.

@dandirk

you can take the curve 2 out of that list as well as the the desire as they are already released on other carriers and not "exclusive" to verizon thus taking away from the hype that the others may induce. that leaves you with the storm 2 - which after the storm 1 disaster, it almost seems as if verizon is trying to underplay it, and the android phones - keyboard vs. non-keyboard. they can push all of theses at once and get the most out of all of them becuase they are giving every possible dynamic a choice of an android phone that suits them. the fact that all over every site i go to about verizon's future android lineup everyone and their mother is trying to decide which phone to get, means that verizon did its job - its getting people buzzing about verizon and grabbing each of them for an extra 29.99 a month... just seems like verizon finally figured out that great coverage only goes so far in a technological day in age....
