Verizon's Blackberry Thunder renamed to Storm

Click to see a large image.
We first learned of the Thunder a few months ago, which is said to be the ultimate Blackberry device featuring a full touchscreen. It now appears that the Verizon model will be called the Blackberry Storm 9530, with Rogers (Canada) and Vodafone (UK) keeping the original Thunder title. The retail box, which showed up on EngadgetMobile, shows that the Storm will come with an 8GB microSDHC memory card pre-installed, SIM Card (for GSM roaming), and will feature a 3.5mm headset jack. Rumors are placing it for an October release.

hmmm, RIMs finally joined the band wagon.

If they've added java to their blackberry phones, than they would be better than any other business phone out there.

im sorry, but this phone is gonna kick some major ass. and im not exactly a blackberry lover. cant wait to see it in action. and if it roams on verizons gsm towers too omg! can you hear me now???? and yes... verizon does own gsm towers.

no they dont...does att own cdma towers? no they dont. the only time verizon phones will use a gsm signal is if there is NO cdma signal available which basically means overseas. good luck though ill make sure to tell my co-workers about you statement so we can all get a good laugh.

You're both off the mark. VZW, AT&T and most of the carriers do not own significant percentages of the towers they use. They are owned by third parties that lease the space for the carrier licenses. The towers that are owned by the carriers, where zoning allows it, they lease the space to other carriers for their antennas.

Verizon owns it's towers and yes there are some GSM towers they have from the RCC (unicel) merger at this momemt but most will be converted to CDMA and the others will probably be sold to AT&T.
Some companies like Sprint have sold their towers to a 3rd Party tower maintainance.

your a complete idiot. Who is RCC? RCC is a cell company that provided CDMA services to there 700,000 + customers. they also own GSM towers for other companies to roam off of. Who the hell do you think bought them? Verizon! Verizon has said that they will continue to operate the GSM service for roaming agreements with other companies. How about that for a good laugh you moron? I am the wrong person to be trying to pick a fight with. Do us all a favor and dive to the bottom of a deep pool and inhale! BTW, if you work for Verizon you should know this information. I for one do work for verizon and i DO know this information to be true!

i love how people assume they know a lot about carriers. for example people think our ptt service runs off of a qualcomm technology when its actually a motorola technology...unless you work for verizon and you have the resources to back up your theories shut your mouth, because half of the things ive just read were very untrue

verizon wireless never bought those towers you "moron". if you worked for verizon you would know that those towers were immediately dropped once they they completely aquired RCC...and just so you know i do work for verizon wireless and our REGIONAL data master was in here today and he confirmed that the GSM towers were DROPPED. PERIOD

you better check you M&SO's before you try to pass arrogance for knowledge again.

atually At&T does own cdma towers. Back in the day when Cingular (GSM) and AT&T (cdma and tdma) joined forces, there was a migratory period where old att subs could use their cdma phones until the transition was complete. ATT kept the towers to sell the licensing rights. VZW owns GSM towers with the purchase of the rural cellular companies they have purchased.

i realize that its the cool thing on here to talk about how verizon cripples phones with their user interface but its a blackberry interface... if this was a discussion on say a chocolate 3 or EnVy 2 then yes it sucks.. not on a smart phone... but you seemed to fit in for at least a few hours right?

And of course you missed the point. It wasn't about Verizons OS it was about applications that they were/are/going to/could add to the device later on or now. But that's ok you'll learn to read one day.

the only Smartphone to ever incorporate V-cast was the Q, that was only V-cast music and that was dropped in the newer addition, no chance on a BB..not missing alot besides V-cast music/rhapsody anyway

So will this be a CDMA phone with a dual-band GSM chip or a quad-band GSM chip? Also, isn't Rogers a GSM network?
0
26.
yes it will have GSM for north america. That is why said that this phone may also be able to operate in the US off of GSM if CDMA is not available. But we will find out soon enough.

Anyone know if it's a capacitive touchscreen?? LG and their pressure sensitive screens suck, that's gonna be the make or break for me

LGs touch screens are one of the few touch screen phones that allow you to use fingernails and styluses these days. Sometimes certain things really require the use of a stylus and for women at least fingernails. The iphone doesn't do it, the glyde doesn't do it. The only phones outisde of smartphones that VZW carries that does it, is the Voyager and Dare. I find the touch on my Voyager to be much more responsive then the Glyde's and other touch phones here in the store.
