Verizon sells 100,000 Motorola DROID units in first weekend This article contains unofficial information.

advertisment:
A stock market analyst, Mark McKechnie, estimated that Verizon stores had 200,000 units of the Motorola DROID on hand to sale at launch. He figures that the stores were able to sell half of its' stock which would indicate that Big Red sold 100,000 phones during the opening weekend. Motorola expects 1 million DROID's to be sold over the balance of the year with 10 million crossing the cash register in 2010. "I see the first few days as encouraging," McKechnie said. "There seems to be pretty good demand -- they've taken the right steps and picked a good partner with Google on the Android side." Another analyst, Jim Suva of Citigroup, expects 1.3 million handsets to be sold in the fourth quarter with 9.2 million moving in 2010. While we hate to bring up the "i" word, these figures compare with Apple's forecast of 8 million iPhones that will be sold in the current quarter with 28.5 million getting sold in 2010.

The Motorola DROID should be a boon to the Schaumberg based manufacturer whose marketshare in the handset biz has dropped from 10% in the second quarter of 2008 to a current 5.6% As for the nation's number one carrier, Verizon now has a phone that can match up to the iPhone and the current roster of ads cracking on AT&T's notoriously spotty 3G coverage has led to a negative perception of the latter carrier among the 18 to 34 year old demographic, a group that has the necessary discretionary funds to purchase a phone like the DROID.

I find this interesting:

"Verizon’s 100,000 Droids looks pretty good next to Apple’s 270,000 iPhones [First Generation], except for one thing. That number does not include Sunday sales, which fell on July 1 and were part of a new quarter. It’s very possible Apple sold as many as 400,000 iPhones during that first weekend of lines around the block." (http://theappleblog.com/2009/11/10/opening-weekend-iphone-vs-pre-vs-droid/)

50,000 Pre Units were sold in the first weekend.

I also find it interesting that Verizon only had 200,000 units shelved. This means Verizon did not expect to outsell the iPhone. I am glad they didn't set themselves up for disappointment. It appears they accomplished what they expected to do.

Still, successful.

Also the first generation iPhone sold out quickly so there probably would have been even more sales. And don't forget tahr th $400 and $600.

I find it interesting that the article says that "Verizon" sold 100,000 Droids and "Apple" sold X amount. It leads me to believe that Apple may have set a purchase quota for At&t in order for them to carry the iphone. So At&t may have sold X amount of phones while Apple may have sold a different amount to At&t and posted that as the amount of phones sold which would not be false. The issue with most tech blogs like this is that most statements are said as fact but they really are more of a guess and the bias of the site comes through. Comparing the sales of a cell carrier against that of a cell phone manufacture is not a fair comparison.

If I manufacture phones and sell them to the carrier the amount that I sell will to the carrier reflects the total amount of handsets I have sold. The carrier then goes and sells the phone, if they do not sell all the phones that represents the total that they have sold.

Also remember the iPhone was sold during the economic bubble, whereas the Droid is sold during a deep recession. Not everyone lives with mommy and have the extra spending cash to buy a toy like the iPhone. Things are bad all around and to even sell the amount the Droid did speaks volumes about the popularity of the phone.

Funny how durring this "recession", 1 Million Plus iPhone 3GS units were sold. (Worldwide Granted) But that aside, screw the supposed "recession" idea. Not working.

I agree with you there. Times were much different when the Iphone launched compared to now. I also think there is still fallout from the Storm launch which also slowed it becuase people want to make sure the phone is not going to have the problems the Storm did.

If you take out the whole fact that your talking about phones, this logic is funny.
Once again...take out the phones in this statement.

"Funny how durring this "recession", 1 Million Plus things were sold. (Worldwide Granted) But that aside, screw the blah blah blah.

Is it all that odd that out of 6.7 BILLION people worldwide that at least 1 MILLION of anything would get sold? Hahaha.

Okay, back to phones.
FS, how long did it take for these 1 million plus iphones to get sold?
Maybe we should take the length of time and figure how many units in the US that would have been over the course of one weekend and pit the device numbers against each other?
The only way we can really look seriously at numbers is if we hold all other things constant. (Microecon 101)
We could even look at the numbers for individual states and see which states like the phone more. I can only assume that the iPhone would outsell the Droid in places where the iPhone has great service, but that's assuming too much, and I could be very wrong.

Well, thanks for reading my first serious post in months, every 3 body.

I love this device!!! Greatest device i've ever owned! Sold my BB Storm for it and now my friend who is one of the BIGGEST Mac fans is selling his iPhone for the Drizzy aka. Droid! Love the SNES/NES emulators to play classic games like Zelda! Web browsing experience is like no other! Also the 3G speed is ridiculously fast! I even connected my Drizzy to my 10meg WiFi network and it was barely any faster. Love downloading full songs OTA which i couldn't do on my BB! Last but not least I love the Barcode scanner app where i can go to www.androlib.com and scan apps/games that i see and want and it automatically opens up the app/game in the Market on my device for download!

I told my friend who has the Voyager to buy this phone considering that it's the best for Verizon. But he passed. He didn't think it was that great. He said he'll wait for a better one.

Funny jailbroken (means you broke it according to apple). Don't have to "break" the Android phones to make them do what you want. How's that brand new picture messaging feature you just acquired on your iPhone? Didn't that Moto Razr have picture messaging? Lol....Don't be mad that the droid operating system is going to stir up competition and make everyone open their minds to innovation. iPhone had it's turn and Apple sat on it instead of putting out something that couldn't be touched (they could have). However, they know that fans of Apple will sink money into the 2010 iPhone right after purchasing 2009 and the 2008 version.

as you say......Sorry couldn't help myself...

Well I've also had MMS pretty much since launch so that didn't really hurt at all. I thought most of the people on this forum were tech-savvy enough to get what I was saying, but you've proven otherwise.

If you ask me, jailbroken iPhones led to the creation of your precious multi-touch CRIPPLED open OS software. That's right, I used crippled and open in the same sentence, because it's true. Funny how all the devs cracked the iPhone years ago and cranked out all the things Android fanboys love today. Tell me how that's a coincidence.

Glad the EDIT button isn't really working anymore but...

I was also going to add that during the release of the iPhone Google and Apple had a great relationship so it's easy to see how Google has taken much of what they learned with the iPhone into incorporation into their OS. If you keep up on news you'd also now that the relationship between Apple and Google has dwindled quite a bit over the past year... Tell me how that is a coincidence too...

Just because I use facts to backup my statements doesn't mean you should all be hating. Maybe you should learn to post comments with support of facts to make your comments actually valid. It would be nice to see more of that on PA instead of lists of idiot comments like most of you.

I think people are underestimating the sales of this device, these figures are unofficial. I will wait to see the actual numbers but there is no doubt that Verizon has started something here I hear it outsold the BB storm Also if you read a little bit you will find the figure that AT&T activated 146000 Iphones at launch on opening weekend yes they sold a lot more than they activated but from a cell providers standpoint that is real bad to sell 130k plus phones only to have them shipped overseas or sold on ebay. if the 100k figure is correct and you compare it to 146k of activated iphones you realize how well Motorola and Verizon did

I am trying to be neutral but Verizon has a hit on there hands nuff said

Don't forget that the iPhones were sold out basically everywhere when it launched. And in my opinion, most of the people who want the phone already bought it or are going to buy it. I doubt that this phone will have a large audience.

You also have to keep in mind that the original iPhones required customers to activate on their own via iTunes. Many (dumb) customers took a few days to either get ahold of someone from Apple or ATT to get help or figure it out on their own.

I do partly agree with you because obviously being a GSM device it was being sold overseas as well, but I think your figures are a little misguided in the activation issues. If the DROID was a GSM device, I'm sure the same could be said about it.

don't forget most industry annalists say android will make up about 30 to 35% of the world smart phone market Apple will only get about 10-13% so you could be correct these figures only represent the Motorola sholes / droid I wonder if you put all the android os phone sales together for that weekend what the total would be? If I had T-Mobile and wanted something like the droid I could get a my touch or moto click or if I had sprint I could get a hero or moment and AT&t doesn't offer one now but I bet they will.

I have a gaming system and I always like to draw comparisons its kinda kike apple Iphone is the sony PlayStation 2 and Microsoft just launched the Xbox 360 (in our example the android OS) all the fanboys talk about home games are available for the PS how the graphics will be better on a PS3. meanwhile Microsoft silently takes 60% of the market, Mark my words this OS is not a apple killer its a game changer

10 million units sold next year? Is it just me, or is that an absolutely silly figure? According to my math, they expect to sell 25k droids a day, everyday in the year 2010. It's like motorola doesn't expect anyone to release a superior android phone in the next year.

IN the article it says Motorola excepts 10 million sold and I know they are working on a GSM version so I wouldn't be surprised. I thought it was high until you made that point and now I can see 10 million once other carriers get it.

10 million is a bit high. I wondering if they are factoring all the GSM type units in that number? Also it's possible that Motorola will make a world phone too, and they are lumping that into the 10 million estimate.

there are always going to be places where Verizon works and ATT doesnt and there will also be places where ATT works where Verizon doesnt. BUT Verizon not only works in more places but it works better. Statistics show this, independent studies/surveys and overall customer base shows it. ummmm 89 Million i think thats proof enough. i dont care who has what phone whether its a droid or an iphone at the end of the day reception is what matters and thats what Verizon is known for.

Stop playing that "fanboy" card. Its one thing to be the largest carrier despite a buyout, but still being the best wireless carrier doesn't come easy at that cost. Ignorance is obvious when you can't come to your own conclusions and your credibility is lost. Yeah, ummmm think about it...

You mean Dogiefresh like when Cingular bought ATT, which was way more than what Verizon bought from the Alltel purchase. Cingular bought over twice as many ATT customers than Verizon did with Alltel. How is that guy being a Fanboy?

Ohh and for all the 3G coverage u guys make fun about is very usefull for those rednecks and farmboys in the midwest jejeje....!!!!

ok for one cdma isnt outdated its just not as popular as GSM. both GSM and CDMA have their pros and cons. faster data trasnfers IS in fact one of the benefits of a CDMA network. HSPA is available on GSM networks but here in the states is very very limited. know your technologies before you start a rant. GSM is more readily available worldwide because it is an overall CHEAPER network to maintain, now im not saying its an inferior network but it is cheaper and therefore more carriers choose this technology. oh by the way if CDMA were dead then countries such as Asia, the US, Canada, Mexico and even some parts of Europe wouldnt even offer CDMA as an option. Sorry but your post was completely biased.

P.S there are rednecks in every state.

Why do iPhone people even read these articles if all they do is come to bash it? If there is an iPhone article I don't even go into it because I don't have one and I don't care. Get a different hobby and no I don't have a droid.

I agree with you. Maybe "iPhone people" think they stand for something or they feel like they are apart of a cultural movement in which they need to feel obligated to defend it. I don't know. Maybe its the fact that the iPhone has sparked a trend in wireless devices & its caused its users to become blinded by the standard set by this device in such a way it isolates their capability to view past the marketing & hype? I've heard of such of thing. Music, fashion, religion, & art has the same effect. At the end of the day, you & I realize ITS JUST A DAMN PHONE. They can call us mundane, but I know I've got higher priorities...

Please keep in mind, these sales figure estimates don't take into account Internet sales. Verizon separates inventory and sales from retail channel and phone/internet orders. Don't ask me why they do it (commission or auditing purposes???) but they do. Actual inventory including retail and centralized was around 400,000 Droids and 300,000 Eris from what I gather. Also doesn't include inventory or sales from national retailers like Best Buy or local authorized dealers (not verizon owned), which if I remember correctly didn't factor into the original iphone sales since original iphone was sold only by AT&T and Apple.

I love My Droid and I know that some Apple people are envious. They will come here and spread their Mac Virus and discredit everything. One thing that I do know about technology is that Apple was way before their time with the Iphone, the problem for them is that HTC and other manufactures caught up with their technology. The Droid is evidence of that!
