Verizon Cameraphone Comparison Q2 2009

Published on: 03 July, 2009 by PhoneArena Team

Overall Ratings and Conclusion:

For real-world images, we believe the enV Touch takes the best overall pictures and we award it 1st place.  Even though the camera is 3MP, it performs better than the Omnia and Exilim when taking pictures outside during the day, which is when most cameraphones are used.  Daytime images are sharp and in-focus with good color saturation, fine detail and proper exposure.  The enV Touch also does well with images taken at night and indoors, but fluorescent lighting will make the image too warm.  This can be corrected by using an image-editing program and slightly lowering the red gamma value of the picture.  We also hope that a firmware update for the phone will correct this.

The Omnia wins the award for 2nd place.  Even though the daytime images are a bit over-exposed, they have good detail and color reproduction.  The Omnia is the best for inside images with good Automatic White Balance, so if you use that a lot, you should consider this phone.

It is a tough choice between the Exilim and enV3 for 3rd place, but that award goes to the Exilim.  Between the two phones, the Exilim produces the best daytime images outside, which is when most cameraphones are used.  However, the enV3 does better for images taken inside and at night, since they are not as blurry, but colors are a bit off.  One thing to keep in mind is the lens defect with the Exilim that causes the edges of images to look blurry, especially the bottom-left corner.  This may concern some people more than others.

Overall, none of these cameraphones are a replacement for a real digital camera.  As it stands now, if a traditional digital camera (such as a Canon or Nikon) produced the same results as these four phones, chances are you would return it.  But since these phones are not designed and marketed as a digital camera replacement, except maybe the Exilim, you can’t expect them to be in the same class.

Miscellaneous:

Although it does not influence the quality of the pictures directly, the operational time of the camera is rather important for its use.

Hmm..clearly the enVTouch has a much better camera than the enV3. Camera quality is important to me alot and actually most of my pictures are taken indoors..
But battery life is also very important and I'm deciding between the env3 and enVTouch so idk!! Help please!
I'm a heavy texter but if the enVTouch's battery is THAT bad, maybe I should just get the env3 and deal with a lousy camera!?
(I'm coming from a Motorla ZINE ZN5)

Agreed it really puts it into perspective, It looked like the Env Touch shows up warm and pink (no vaj jokes) in most pictures. I have the omnia and I love it for pictures (not so much as a phone) and it takes great shots, Im glad to see I made the right choice with camera though...Im pretty dissapointed the Exilim didnt take the cake, it looks the most lagitamately like a camera from the back and its a 5.1 just a little better than the others...Its a good thing the egyptions didnt rush the pyramids.

I agree with the comment about shooting some pictures of people. I primarily use my phone camera for taking pictures of my active 2-year-old. It'd be nice to see how these phones handle portraits and action shots....

It is my understanding that the Lg enV Touch has the best video recording quality as well with 640X480 @ 30 fps. Is this correct? What phone that Verizon offers has the best video recoriding quality?

Many of those indoor shots with the Touch are really red. Did using the Fluorescent white balance setting help that? Was that not tested at all?

All the tested phones were used in Auto mode, since that is the default and will be what most consumers use. The red hue produced by the enV Touch when used indoors (under fluorescent lighting) can be reduced some by manually change the White Balance setting. You can also adjust it better using an image-editing program on your PC and lower the Red Gamma value slightly.

Hard to believe that the Casio photos were the most blurry. Sure that you didn't mistakenly have the image stabilizer off?
