Texas Instruments and MIT have developed a new energy-efficient mobile chip

A group of scientists at Texas Instruments and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have been working on a project for a new chip design for portable electronics. They have succeeded to produce a unit, which can be up to ten times more energy-efficient than current technology. The new design was presented Feb. 5 at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) in San Francisco. It supports MPEG-4 video streams, includes an 840MHz ARM11 for the applications, a 480MHz TI C55x DSP core to process 2G and 3G baseband communications and a 240MHz image processor. At the same time, when loaded the chip draws 500mW peak and as little as 100-250mW if low-recourse apps are running.

The TI and MIT’s design is definitely going to compete with Intel’s Silvetron CPU, which is way more demanding. Unfortunately the new design will be commercially available, for mobile electronic devices in about five years.
