As a whole, we are quite pleased with the Sony Ericsson W995 during talks. We could hear loud sound and realistic voices at out tests. People on the other end complained voices were coming out rather sharp, but when we asked them to turn the volume down, almost to the lowest setting, quality got substantially better and they said the problem was solved. Unfortunately, with the sound through the loudspeakers turned on, we were heard properly on the other end, although we couldn’t easily make out what we were told.

Batteries that do last have always been one of the strengths of Walkman models and Sony Ericsson W995 is no exception. According to the manufacturer, you will have 20 hrs of continuous audio playback, 9 hrs of talk (4 on 3G networks) and 360 hrs in standby.

Conclusion:

Just a simple glance at the specs of the Sony Ericsson W995 should be enough to convince you that this is the most high-tech model of the Walkman Series. Does that mean it is the best as well? In terms of sound quality (not through the boxed earphones), camera performance and GPS, this is the case indeed. All other functions are on level with what the W705 delivers. In other words – OK, meaning good, but not impressive.

The thing is the flagship status gets the phone into the same pricing range of where devices like the Samsung INNOV8 and the UltraTOUCH are and they both have cameras that aren’t worse and better video playback capabilities. Still, the W995 is a nice option, because along with MediaGo, it is up to the task of providing enough entertainment.

I have loved SE ph's (owned 3 of them), but i am now moving away.
SE is going down big time. Their mistakes are similar to the big 3 US auto makers. Not giving what customers want, instead expecting them to buy what's offered. As a Flagship W995 WM ph should have had Touchscreen, better video, head phones. Others like Samsung, LG, HTC all are racing ahead with countless, cool touch screen ph's. SE's web site shows a long confusing list of Music n camera ph's. They have announced 3 touch ph's but have not launched them, such a pity. Not only does SE take for ever to launch good ph's but they also overprice them (X1). Why can't they do away with M2 cards & have micro SD instead in their ph's, replace that pop port with microUSB. Sony Erricson will probably never wake up. Good Bye Sir & thank you.

hey so true.. they are going down and they need to act soon.. the problem is 5 years back the competition was less and they could do what they want and people had to buy it.. nowdays there is soo much of competition and brands that companies has to go according to the consumer and what they want.. i just love sony ericsson and i really hope they get out of this mess.. and the biggest advantage sony ericsson has is they have lot of loyal fans but they just need to be aggressive and move on by giving us good touchscreen phones, 3.5mm jack, microsd cards, micro usb chargers and fully loaded features and get more all in one phones like business series and mulitmedia series.. i am a die hard fan of sony and sony ericsson products and i am using x1 right now and i just love it.. SE RULES!

Everyone knows the X1 is a neat ph, but it costs a heap load of money. In contrast N97 with that big 3.5" screen, mammoth 32gb memory, magnetic compass, stereo speakers, 5 mega pix camera, actually costs less.

A nitpick on this and other recent SE reviews:

They state that the Contacts list will not allow you to search by last name. Technically, this is untrue.

You can go to Contacts -> Options -> More -> Adanced -> Sort order, and select "By last name".
From now on, you will search by last name, not firstname (also applies to "smart search" in the home screen).

Clearly not as useful as "partial match" searching (like e.g. Nokia S60), but still, needs to be corrected in this and other reviews.
