The camera interface of the Sony Ericsson Satio
The 12-megapixel camera of the Sony Ericsson Satio will not manage to wow you with its interface or options. Just like on the OMNIA HD, interface elements appear in black and white and lack enough colors and zing. It delivers shooting presets, several different modes like Panorama, BestPic, smile detection and touch-focus to help you pick an object to focus on (similarly to the HTC Touch Pro2). The camera flash comes with red eye removal mode and the built-in GPS provides geotagging if you switch the option on. Unlike the Samsung OMNIA HD i8910, you don´t have the opportunity to capture videos in HD and the maximum resolution is VGA (640x480). Now, here are the snapshots we promised you would see later. Just keep in mind the device is early prototype, so we are withholding our comments on their quality.

Multimedia:

The audio player of the Sony Ericsson Satio reminds of the 2 year old W960, but still, we can see improvements have been made. As a whole, it is convenient to use, although settings like equalizer or sound effects are missing. The Satio sports an FM radio as well that kept freezing on us, so we could its rather simplified interface, but not the options it offers.

advertisment:
The video player interface looks quite nice with its large control keys. We couldn’t help the temptation and played several short videos… what we had in our hands was a 3.5-inch display after all. The prototype shows the final release should be able to play videos with quite good quality, delivering pleasing, saturated colors. Unfortunately, the phone is expected not to support DivX and Xvid content, but, you know, hope springs eternal…

Expectations:

The Sony Ericsson Satio is expected to hit the shelves at the beginning of Q4 this year. There is still a lot of time until then, meaning quite many rival makes will certainly come out by then. The 12-megapixel Samsung Pixon12 has been announced and it should become available at the end of June or the beginning of July, plus the multimedia monster OMNIA HD i8910 is on the market already. And not to mention officials with LG have already dropped some hints on a 12-megapixel cell phone being in the pipeline. It won´t really come as a surprise if other manufacturers take on the market with similar models by the time the Satio has made it to the market. This means that we are probably about to witness one hell of a fight. We can´t wait to take the front seats and see what happens.

The Satio's front looks more classy than the other phones, although I do wish they would quit using these humongous, clunky lens covers.
.
.
When it comes to features, it becomes obvious why Sony Ericcson is loosing market share and paring down their work force.
.
.
I don't know behind what rock their product managers are hiding behind...
.
its your top of the line device?
.
1) give us headphone jacks (yeah, try not to annoy your customers with little shit for once)
2) give us HD recording, (beat Samsung with 30fps and better audio recording)
3) give us HDMI output and a wide variety of codec support.
4) lose that clunky lens cover and use the space for more battery
5) given that you're the Cybershot company, put a lil tripod attachment on the bottom!
.
For a Sony device (the one non-apple company with a long standing claim to specializing on supplying gear to the creative talent of the planet) This should definitely have HD video recording, (coming out a half a year after Samsung's i8910) Maybe a less obvious reason HD recording is so great, is cause its enough resolution to pull really nice stills from the footage. And stills pulled from video footage will often give you a capture of the very best moment, when you slow-mo through them in your video editor.
.
.
So, Don't be lamers and many more people will buy your phones.

I do agree with you to some extent but not fully. I'd been using SE for long time, but switched over to Nokia 5800 for the reason obvious to all. SE has been living in denial for long time. They have even gave statement that nobody wants full touch screen without keypad (such a short sightedness). They had quite a head start as compared to Samsung and LG but they lost the advantage when they tried to impose on users their choices. Now things are getting back to where they should be. Satio is just an example of that. They are behind the competition in many fronts such as HD recording, 3.5 mm Jack and most importantly in innovation. Nobody wants to buy a new mobile just because it has got extra megapixels. One looks for features which are innovative and exciting, at the same time easy to use. They have got to get it right this time. Give what customer wants than give them what you think they want. And give them at the price they can afford. Be more competitive. I still feel that SE can recover from this mess but surely it will be their last chance.

Awaiting for Samsung Pixon 12. This prototype 12 mega pixel quality not impress me. The image quality is just so so. I can't judge on it since it is prototype. Wish SE look more on it and final product will give us wow, don't only up the mega pixel but not the quality of the lens.

They call it Entertainment Unlimited and it neither has a 3.5 music jack nor usb micro, not to mention lack of music equalizer.

Hey everyone, does anybody know if there's a confirmed release date for the Satio? I just heard about this phone the other day and I'm way excited for it. I've been trying to upgrade to a next-generation phone for awhile now, but hadn't found one I really wanted until I saw the info video for it (which you can see at http://modestcomplexity.blogspot.com/2009/07/satio_17.html). I really think this is finally a phone that's not just a poor man's attempt at an iPhone - a 12 megapixel camera alone is already better than my normal digi cam!

And not that this really makes the phone any better, but I really dig the song in the info video, "Under Control" by Rootbeer. It's fun, fit the whole image well, and still doesn't come across like one of those iPod commercials.

i have had a play on this device, and it was very nice, a few lagging issues withthe keyboard when switching from portait to lanscape, it doesn't automatic switch from mini qwerty to full qwerty, which is a shame but hopefully they should update that before the release, but the typing is really good, almost as good as on the htc magic

I called the Sony Style store in my area and asked if they're going to receive the Satio. They said that they never even heard of it before. I know the release date is next week, but I can't find it for the US.
