Samsung's SGH-i900 is shiny, awesome

When we first heard about the i900 back in January we were a bit skeptical, but it looks like Samsung really is pulling this one out of its bag of tricks. It was on display with some other unannounced Sammys at a mobile conference in Holland last month, and yesterday the Chinese website PCOnline got some hands-on with the upcoming Windows Mobile 6.1 device. Wi-Fi, 3.5" touchscreen display, 16GB of onboard memory with microSD expansion, 5 megapixel autofocus camera...suffice it to say that the specs are drool-worthy:

  • 3.5G HSDPA connectivity
  • Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro OS
  • 3.5″ 240×400px, 262K color TFT touchscreen display
  • 5 megapixel autofocus camera
  • front camera for video calls
  • Built-in GSM
  • FM Radio
  • TV-Out
  • 16GB of built-in memory
  • microSDHC memory card slot (up to 8GB)
  • Bluetooth 2.2, A2DP
  • Wi-Fi b/g
  • 1500mAh battery
  • Dimensions: 112×56×13mm

From one of the pictures it appears that it may be dressed in the standard Windows Mobile garb instead of a fancy reskin a-la TouchFLO 3D, but other than that we can't find a single thing wrong with this thing. Ok, that shiny exterior will fingerprint like crazy...but other than that we can't find a single thing wrong here. It looks like there will be an Anycall i908 counterpart, but no word on what that means. Samsung still hasn't officially announced this, so things are subject to change, but as of now we're pretty excited about the idea of a US version.

it is official - its already on sale in China as i900 (international version) and i908 (china version) - I believe the price is 500USD. I am still trying to find out if it has GPS built-in - I am buying it if it does. I have heard some say that it does and others say it doesnt

Anycall is east Asia Samsung phone line, 8 is replaced with 0on Samsung phones for China (i900, international, i908 China) so Anycall i908 will be Chinese Samsung i900.

It's sad, cause your statements aren't supported by actual facts. But that's okay. It let's the rest of us that are actually informed have a chance to be amused at your antics.

Thank you for your ignorance.

God, WTF?!? Why do so many people think that Apple was the first to do an all touch screen phone?!? It was LG!! What's more is that apple does NOT have the best MP3 players or computers, both those statements are relative and solely based on opinion. This is another perfect example of why so many people hate apple users with the fire of a thousand swords.

oh boy (nr 4), you've been seriously brainwashed by Steve jobs. Pay less for quality products made by brands other than apple! Open your eyes.

This looks nice, but it is NOT VGA. I don't see what all the excitement is about.

They should have made this VGA. All they did was add 80 pixels to the bottom. With the size much larger at 3.5 inches, it may actually look worse.

The HTC Diamond is going to have 480 x 640 in a 2.8 inch screen.

The HTC Diamond is going to be plagued with the same HTC BS that has turned them into a piss-poor company. I'd import this phone too if I knew I could get it to work on VZW.

I actually sell verizon (corporate) and between htc and sammy, htc is the clear superior choice as far as the i760 and other htc devices go. Samsungs standard handsets have been subpar in reception for about a year now in comparison to lg. HTCs' specs in our CURRENT line up (not future devices) are far better than samsungs and I believe that the Diamond and the Raphael will be very great pdas. Who needs 5 megs on a camera phone?

the i760 is sammy not htc, and as far as its performance, it is a pretty solid ppc. i've tweaked mine tons and have not had any problems.

regarding your 5 megapixel comment, that summarizes my biggest gripe with verizon - why the hell does verizon dumb-down phones and keep them in the pipeline for so long? "why do you need 5 megs" b/c i want a great camera in my phone ya dink!

if big V gets this phone, i guarantee you it will have dumb-downed specs (sub-par camera, disabled java, and no gps) and will not be released for a good while (maybe a year or more as they did with the glyde). you can't beat verizon's service, but delaying releases so they can dumb-down the specs and keep control of user's features is enough to make me switch as soon as my contract is up.
