Sales of smartphones with open source operating systems to double until 2014

advertisment:
A study by Juniper Research shows that annual sales of smartphones utilizing open source operating systems will have grown significantly by 2014. The current annual figure amounts to 106 mln units and is expected to swell to over 223 mln in five years. The research team, however, is of the opinion that devices with open source OS are not to play a key role in the sales growth. Everything would depend on whether or not an operating system allows for a simplified and easier software development - with the underlying reason being the specific needs of both customers and developers. The easier it is to come up with an app, the faster it appears on the market and starts to generate revenues.

Finally, the team comes to the conlusion that the manufacturer´s choice of particular operating system is to become of increased importance in terms of gaining market share, which is to become more closely connected to how easy it is to create applications for the specific platform. This will ultimately lead to both developers and consumers turning the table on manufacturers with the former laying down the terms. Sounds pretty logical to us, what about you?
