Funny comments there by T-HUFF and some others. It's already been said, Nokia dominates pretty much every market except North America...North America has been difficult because the market is very different, with all the sales going through operators unlike Europe for example. NA also has a different selection of phones, and that is partly also because of what the operators choose as their phones.

You wanna know why Nokia dominates developing markets? It does the basics best; no other manufacturer can produce good basic phones at such a cheap price. Oh, and developing markets are not necessarily 'stupid'...very America centered thinking there. What Nokia hasn't traditionally excelled in are mid-range phones...but looking at their upcoming and recent models, that seems to be about to change. Mind you, I don't have that much to say against any other manufacturer. Sony Ericsson does the best mid-range phones IMO. LG and Samsung are not my cup of tea, they've generally suffered from weak batteries and form. Motorola...I hate the design. Though I have to say I haven't been happy with some of the past Nokia designs either.

But really, to understand why Nokia is so clearly number 1 you have to understand cell phone markets worldwide, not just the US of A.
