Nokia has recently released the new SDK for the Series 40 6th Edition for application developers and network operators in order for them to create applications and services.
The Series 40 6th Edition tailors to:
• Nokia WebKit Open Source Browser for a complete web experience
• Adobe Flash Lite 3.0 for vivid yet mellow content for mobile phones
• Java based location API which is utilized for navigation and location conscious services
The new SDK is intended to bring the three, mentioned above, to the worldwide market exposed to the Series 40 platform by enabling application development, testing and debugging tools.
The WebKit Browser features the Pointer UI, Incremental Page Rendering, Page Overview, Visual History and the Minimap which were all previously found on the S60 devices.
With the adaption of Adobe Flash Lite 3.0, video streaming, 3D graphics, etc., will bring an enhanced user experience also in part due to the Series 40 6th edition’s new HVGA Portrait 320x480 main screen UI resolution support.
Location API is another major step for the Series 40 6th Edition as seen in the 6260 that was recently announced. The enabling of GPS and location-based services will surely enhance the future devices to the S60 level. This is, of course, with the developers coming up with new and useful applications.
Now, with a strong portfolio of E-series and N-series devices, Nokia will make our choices a bit more difficult when it comes to picking out a phone as the new SDK will enable devices with the Series 40 6th Edition to join the same league.
