11. Nokia 5800 MX for techies

9 May 2009 by JFigge

<!-- @page { size: 8.5in 11in; margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } -->

I recently picked up the Nokia 5800 mx and it's pretty much what you'd expect from Nokia. It's a mid range phone with good call quality, a wealth of features and, with the latest firmware, a stable platform.  The big advantage of this phone over other Asian clones is that is uses the symbian S60 5th edition OS.  This means you can download an SDK to your computer and start developing apps for it using C++, Java or HTML.   iPhone adverts talk about an app for checking a fedex delivery or running a search for the nearest coffee show, well with the ability to write apps in HTML (with Ajax support) you can put up your own app to retrieve the data directly from fedex's web site.  It's just a matter of time before someone does this.  Also, with the up and coming arrival of the n97 (big brother and iPhone rival) the apps will start flooding in and the nokia5800 is posed to take full advantage of these with the same OS as the N97.  With a bit of luck the 5800 will also get a new firmware upgrade with the 07 is released so that it, too, can have multiple shortcut bars on the home page

Also, the touch screen is very sensitive despite being resistive technology, the camera is excellent in daylight, but very poor in low light (regardless of the flash).  menu navigation is reasonable and can be adjusted, screen is bright and generally easy to use.  With it's built in WiFi support this phone is basically a mobile web surfer with a top quality phone attached

* Open architecture for loading / writing apps
* OS shared with new, iphone rivaling, N97
* Screen resolution / sensitivity / brightness
* Connectivity (wifi, usb, 3g, ...)
* small and easy to handle (little too thick)
* It's a Nokia (build quality)
* Good battery life
* Home screen can't be tapped (touched) to open menu.
* Menu (+ send / end ) buttons are hard to press and should have been touch.
* No touch to wake the phone (must use slider on side - ugh)
* Processor a little slow (not as snappy as iPhone / eternity)

13. One of the best on the market.

I have used the iphone, storm, and many windows mobile touch devices. I can easily say that after using this phone for a week, it is more stable and has more features than any of those other phones...

14. nice!!!!!!!!!!!

26 Apr 2009 by mr. nokia

96.7%9.7out of 10

its very nice but I've got experience that,

Main disadvantages:

  • Limited 3rd party software availability

  • UI is still immature with somewhat dodgy user experience

  • Touchscreen sensitivity not the best in the class

  • No smart dialing

  • Poor image quality and no GPS geotagging (geotagging is now added via firmware update)

  • Touch web browser not quite polished

  • No voice-guided navigation license

  • No office document editing out-of-the-box

  • Doesn't charge off microUSB

TV out
Excellent audio quality
Landscape on-screen virtual QWERTY keyboard
Proximity sensor for screen auto turn-off
Accelerometer sensor for automatic UI rotation and motion-based gaming
OVI and MySpace integration (direct image and video upload
I mentioned above

15. Software Issues

11 Apr 2009 by Shreekant Pathak

The Nokia 5800 is not so great. Hangs especially when new message is received. Shows memory full, close some allpications even though no applications are open. Even Nokia repair centre colud not solve this software related issues. Was disappointed when they refused to replace defective piece even though in warranty period. Would not recommend to buy. HTC models are better.

19. A touch revolution by NOKIA!!!!!!!!!!!

13 Jan 2009 by Rupansh

90%9out of 10

Hey recently got this phone ... fell in love it the first time I got it in my hand on the nokia priority (live demo) and i thought of buying a new one... it has been 10 days of me using this and i assure its a true value for money and a multimdia computer ... well to talk about its features ... Camera its good 3.2 mp is fine with me but it would be nice to expect some quality 7-8 mp camera phones from nokia to be in pace with other brand mobile phone cams ... touch and accelerometer is so fast and does make you wait ... touch screen is very sensitive and thus great indeed.. screen' brilliant but not that in the Sun ... it would be nice if the screen was made a bit wider ... music player and sound... Woh!! itzzz beyond clear and loud... its rocking... Well the processing is bit slower than other high end s60 devices by nokia  ...  video playability  is absolute marvellous ... itzz a gem in playing  quality video music  with its bombasting stereo speaker ... voice quality during call is just amazing... web surfing is to die for on 3.2" screen (rocking in landscape mode)... s60 OSS browser just rules...wifi works great...usb connection with laptops or pcs is very fast and reliable...side and main keys are very smooth to work...  main screen doesnt rotate by accelerometer (but who cares) ... touch navigation throgh gps is great ... its got the navigator in it... woh!! it has 81MB intetrnal memory and an 8gb micro SD  and can be expanded to 16 gb which i did and did not find any problems filling it to12.7 gb ... so gotta expect from nokia an large OLED touchscreen  in  this year in  coming handsets  ... well one thing has to be said symbian is great and it greatening even more with next versons like in this new 9.4 th version ...applications rock as we can edit even office documents...onscreen qwerty is bit difficult to use but better with the stylus...I'm a chatting addict  so i should say a qwerty keyboard should be there ...3g services have not yet been launched in many parts of here but luckily i can access as it is available here...well summarising it on the whole ... sim can be inserted from outside without removing the back cover but removed only by removing battery first and push the sim out...memory card can be removed or inserted from outside only Its a high end device and it should be partial calling it a mid-level phone...well expecting something still more than this from the n97 ... And last but not the least THANK YOU NOKIA

Loudness and clarity...wifi... cam with 30fps video recording...huge expandable memory...gps...large display with brilliant colours...good screen resolution... large no. of audio-video formats supported...3.5mm jack ...tv out...large no. of means for data transfer ... & so on
no camera lens cover ... fingerprint and scratch catching body... screen not usable in the sun even on full light sensor

20. Nokia really did it this time..

11 Jan 2009 by Par

86.7%8.7out of 10

Honestly, I don't know what the hype is about the N97, this phone is amazing. I got mine a month ago, and I can't keep my hands off of it. In this last year i'v been through a series of phones looking for the perfect one, it started out with the Nokia N95 which was OK, but to bulky and not a good looking phone at all. Then I went through N82 which was also just ok again to bulky and slow. Then I finally decidied to get into the touch screen phones, first going to Tmobile G1 which I liked but didn't use the Qwerky keypad call me old fashioned but I like the old t9.So then I went to the Lg Dare which I loved but as we all know even though I work for Verizon it's still way to expensive for me. And all their phones are locked you can't do shit with them unless you use their services. So switching back to Tmobile I tried the Samsung Omnia, which was HORRIBLE. I hate windows mobile, if your going to pur your operating system on a touchscreen make it more touch friendly.

Finally I settled with the Samsung Behold, and honesly it was the best out of all them, except for the fact that it didn't have Wifi or a 3.5mm headset jack which ended up being deal breakers for me.

When I finally got this phone I was in LOVE, not only is it eye catching, but it does EVERYTHING i need it to do. The touchscreen is amazing, it's fast, the accelometer works great no delay. The sound quality is beyond flawless making it the best phone and the loudest, the music player and video player are pretty much amazing like the N95.And you have 4 different ways to input your information. Web Browsing is easy as ever and the antenna must be stronger on this phone cause I get service in areas where other TMO customer have 1 to 0 bars.  This phone is revoltionary and it's sad that Nokia stole it's thunder from it's own by realeasing the N97 right after.

If you want a REAL IPhone Killer, or a phone that does everything the N97 will do but almot half the price, then go with this one.

Everything I said above
Software still a little glichy should be fixed with the upcoming software update
Camera can be better
A Tiny bit bulkier then other touch screens out in the market,
