New widgets to come for the Samsung OMNIA

The first time we encountered the widgets of the TouchWiz interface (in the Samsing F480 and the OMNIA), we mentioned that they are a cool feature, but lack variety (of the apps) and enough space to put them in. Still, nothing can be done on the last issue… the manufacturer hasn’t announced any plans for an OMNIA HD with a 5-inch display. The extra widgets, however, are already on their way to the screen of the multifunctional Windows Mobile phone.

The update, which is going to feature them, is still in its beta stage of development and isn’t stable, but then, it’s going to bring some cool improvements. For instance, there’s a new application that gives you the option to control which of the widgets to be available. As we mentioned, their number has increased, and among the new additions you’ll find AccuWeather, Yahoo Finance, CNN, Google Search. Their number can be increased even more, since there will be an option to download additional ones from Yahoo. The update will also improve the Opera Mobile browser, by adding a function, called Samsung Mobile Blog.

If you have the GSM OMNIA, you can try the beta software (on your own responsibility) by downloading it from here. There is no information if there will be such update for the Verizon Wireless version.

Yeah right...like VZW would allow FREE additions to our devices. If VZW passes these new widgets along to us, it'll probably only be available through the VZW App store! Mo' money...Mo' money...Mo' money (and we'll probably have to wait 'til next Christmas. Ho Ho Ho).

Try again....this is free. Widgets are just add ons for apps you have on the device, why would they charge anyone for icons?

Stop showing your hater-ism so blatantly and be a bit more logical.

i dont see the big deal w/ open gps, the Navigator program comes on it, and it is the best around. I'll put Navigator up against any tom tom, tam tam, garmin, or what ever else. It works better than any other phone nav thats for darn sure.

and Jedi.. its a free app. its just an organizational tool for the phone. and vzw charges no differently than ATT (but we provide better service for it!!!)

The widgets were a cool addition, but lacked real purpose and functionality.

They need to be able to go across multiple screens (iphone-esq swipe system) and the user needs to be able to scroll through the widgets a lot easier.
i.e. give a widget search facility. Also, i'd love phones to integrate a full search facility like Apple's Spotlight.. or at least what windows have done on vista (just not as efficiently or speedily as apple) for messages, applications, phone numbers, pictures etc. I'd like to be able to search across any info on the phone
