If you are using an unlocked iPhone 3G or 3GS over T-Mobile, you probably will be better off NOT downloading the new OS 3.1.3. This is because Apple has put the screws to T-Mobile customers. The new OS creates issues with T-Mobile's network. For example, some 3rd party apps might fail to launch (Cupertino, we have a problem), furthermore, upgrading top the new OS would upgrade your baseband to 5.12.01 which would make it impossible to unlock the iPhone and use it on T-Mobile's network. Owners of the first-gen iPhone are not affected and can still upgrade to the new OS without affecting a T-Mobile connection. One day last week, we reported that the iPhone rumor of the day was that the device would be heading to T-Mobile by the summer. There's a solution to the problem that we're sure the carrier's customers could live with.

Apple is so dedicated to Break any company that tries to use their product without official permission. They got Palm to give the iTunes fight..now this. It looks like the update wasn't suppose to improve anything on the OS. It was just to lock T-Mobile out. AT&T is probably behind this too.

If you want an IPhone then sign a contract with At&t like everyone else. If apple wants to block out T-Mobile then they should be allowed to, afterall it is their product specified to work on the At&t network. I'm sure apple is sorry for any problems this causes for people who use their IPhone in a way that it is not meant for:)

Only problem is that AT&T sucks, so I commend the people that are using it on Tmobile.

Hate to burst your bubble but AT&T coverage is superior to T-Mobile's coverage in the United States. Note that I neither work for either company nor have their service.

AT&T has superior 3G coverage (wow I thought I'd never say that) than T-Mobile. But that's like saying the Knicks are better than the Nets. Wait for VeriPhone (Verizon iPhone)

Google & Adobe FTW?! You do know Google has or is going to support html5 instead of Adobe's flash because flash is unstable right? Haha, but true, Steve Jobs needs to be fired. Apple could be so good without that #$% running their company into the ground...

You do recall what happened to Apple when they got rid of him in the late 80's early 90's? They almost went broke. They didn't rebound until they asked Jobs to sign on as a consultant. He brought back a company who's stock price was close to single digits to what it is today. So to answer your question no they can not operate without Steve Jobs. It has already been proven. As for the T Mobile block out that's should be up to them. I can't see why people get pissed off because a company decides to lock out a product they developed and signed a deal with another company. I understand it's cool to take a product that's meant for one thing then figure out how to make it work for another. The thing with that is you have to deal with happens when they catch on or decide enough is enough and figure out away to lock you out. There could be many reasons for this. Maybe they wanna cut down on CS calls from people with unlocked iPhones clogging lines and holding up actual legit iPhone customers.
I'm not perfect and have unlocked an iPhone but understood when I did it that eventually they would come out with an update that would do this. I'm sure someone will figure out a way around this lock and everythig will go back to normal. If not get another phone and move on or just wait and when AT&T buys T Mobile your phone will work fine. Had to throw that in being it was rumored in an article I was reading from another site.

Ignoring the "without permission", how about everything they do being based on linux and taken from them. They modify it slightly and sell it for an outrageous amount of money, calling it revolutionary and so "easy to use".

How about all the stuff that Apple does and others just copy/take? The obvious one is multi-touch. Almost every phone is getting it now despite the patent.

The only reason Nokia is suing Apple for the standard they freely give to other companies is because Apple is steamrolling over their cell phone market share. Get you facts straight. The GSM standard that you are referring to is the technological knowledge of how to use various methods of connecting to a GSM network standard which is happened to be used by AT&T. Other various "infringements" include some sort of Wi-Fi and LAN based protocol or other. Please note though that Nokia is only using over the iPhone and not the iPod Touch for infringement rights hence the fact that the iPhone is a cell phone and the only thing Nokia is concerned about at this moment.
