London allowing SMS use to contact police

It looks like the good people of London are now able to use their cell phones to contact the local police force for non-emergency situations. The SMS service will only cover the United Kingdom’s City of London and is aimed mainly for people that have hearing or speech impediments. But the service is available to anyone residing within the city. In order to use the service, they need to send a message with their location, brief details of what is happening, and their name. They will of course receive a confirmation text when the police gets their message. This new service is actually replacing the existing typetalk and textphone services. Now wouldn’t it be great if we could adopt this service over here in every major city?
