Life with the iPhone 3G, one week later

In our initial review we noted several problems we’ve had with the software, but the list just keeps growing and we are growing increasingly less patient...

I don't think the iphone sucks, it's just apple fanboys are so easy to hate. They are the equivalent to technology hipsters, so damn smug. The phone is innovative and the UI is great, but there is just alot of phones out there that do the same things and much better. Why can't everybody just tip their hat to the iphone, because it has pushed phones forward and ultimately the consumer across the board will win in the end.

Seriously, I have tired all Verizon phones and in the end, not even on looks they get to be close to the iPhone.. and i'm one that wanted to be with VZW over ATT.. I dont have the iPhone yet, but after messing with it a few times, not is much easier to use and type on it then I expected, but is easier to use then the Dare and Glyde phones..

The only one phone I would concider at this time over the iPhone would be the Samsung Instinct, but at this moment,, I am not a fan of Sprint at all, so getting hte Instinct for me is out of the question..

ive had the iphone canceled the service not even 30 days later and sold the phone i ebay yes it is a really nice phone great for the person on the go the down side its with at&t. im still with verizon with my envy the dare is a POS its looks cheap and feels cheap the touch screen is cheap atleast with the iphone u can tap the screen the dare u have to pound the screen. the good thing is by the end of 08 when the take over of alltel is complete (VZW is now the US largest cell phone provider) they will unlock there network to phones and apps that met there specs. this means u can get a samsung instinct and have it work on the verizon network. or any cdma phone.

That's a dumb comment. In addition to the iPhone troubles, at&t has what is consistently rated the worst coverage (or second worse, only beating Sprint) in the country.

What Verizon has better is reliable service that is consistently ranked the best in the country.

Have fun with your defective toy on a non-working network. Should be a blast! Just don't shoot yourself when you see how your phone will work for the next two years.

So by switching to the iphone you like:
- the ability to NOT put insurance on your iphone
- the ability to NOT download music OTA (over the air)
- the ability to NOT get a new or extended battery in a store
- the ability to be on a network with less coverage, more dropped calls, and second class customer service
- the ability to NOT have an actual QWERTY keyboard you can slide out or filp open
- the ability to be on a 3G network that is only available in large metropolitan areas
- the ability to be limited to WIFI areas if you want fast internet speeds
- the ability to NOT have removable/expandable memory
- the ability to NOT have actual turn-by-turn GPS on the go
- the ability to NOT have your defective iPhone worked on/switched out at your local store
-the ability to NOT "Hear Me Now?"

actually bud i've had plenty of customers who actually were currently using the iPhone and switched to the dare because of lockups, reception issues on the handset, and stability. I also used the IPhone myself and i do admit that it is the best touchscreen by far but im not going to sacrifice getting a good touchscreen over all the other services that phone cannot offer and the dare can.

Its all about what you need, if all you care about is how accurate and versitile ur touchscreen is get the iphone, if you care about service, speed, and reliability with an okay touchscreen get the Dare, not to mention working bluetooth features.

Dont get me wrong Apple makes great products, I personally have the MACBOOK AIR and an iPod Touch, i just dont want to be on a second-class network.

The iphones internet browser is second-to-none, but the network is second-to-verizon and albeit a very distant second.

Exactally - The ATT Tilt, which is better than the iPhone of course, is only $199 now, same as the iPhone 3G. It's a much better phone technically speaking and with all the add-ons and mods it becomes an even better phone aesthetically.

The defense rests.

Oh my word that comment just goes to show how blinkered the Apple Kool-aid drinkers are!!!!!!

Blackberry and Windows Mobile has been providing the features that Apple still haven't got right for more than 7 years!

Also due to the large and mature developer community you can add any skin to the device you like, just take a look at the demo here http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/mobileshell/?en

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=402021&highlight=diamond

And if you really like the Apple UI I strongly recommend here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEQ7oo4U7nE
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=392985

I think the IPhone UI is great but it ain't worth $1,800 over 2 years with the bugs etc
On top of this in terms of features it is still playing catchup

It still has a low megapixel camera, there are tons of posts complaining about lockups and synchronisation errors where data is lost !!! It has only just started providing 3G and true GPS, there is no Video conferencing, No memory card slot, can't change the battery, screen rotation works only on a subset of the IPhone programs!! No Bluetooth A2DP Stereo Headset support!

I have had HSDPA and GPS for over a year, syncin'g email......pleeeaase...6 years and counting and there are many more but I won't go on.

However the screen is amazing and the GUI is great but as I can add any GUI I like and am not locked into ITunes etc I'd stick with something like the Samsung Omnia

The Samsung Omnia has so many more features than any other Windows Mobile Phone out there so it kicks the IPhone into the dust on the functionality stakes

16GB internal with upto 16GB memory card support (that's upto 32GB of storage!!!)
Worlds first DivX certified phone!!!
Xvid/H.263/H.264/WMV/MP4 support
5 megapixel camera CMOS camera with a host of semi professional features!!!
TV out
GPS
HSDPA 7.2Mbps
3.2" screen
True screen rotation in all programs
Video recording with a host of semi professional editing features!!!
FM Radio with RDS
Bluetooth with Headset A2DP support
Office document support
WiFi
Decent battery 1400mAh

I use the HTC Tilt/TyTn II/Kaiser... This phone has a touch screen, it has Google Maps, I downloaded a 3rd party flash video player to it so I can watch everything YouTube and other sites have to offer, it has real GPS (not tower triangulation like the iPhone), I don't have to sync anything to it, but my Outlook contacts, I can play any music format I want because I just copy it to my SD card via a card reader and then pop it into the phone, it has a 3 megapixel camera (which is evern weak now, but still better than iPhone's, and oh yeah--I can send multimedia messages (you know, that function that's been on pretty much every phone since late 2002, but still is not on the iPhone). iPhone rules? Sure it does, it rules all of the world's weak-minded sheep that are hypnotized and fooled by marketing instead of researching functionality and user friendliness. You know who has an iPhone? The same clowns that have iPods. Please tell me how your PC-syncing, data losing, letting another company spy on your hard drive (iTunes), iPod/iPhone could ever be better than my USB mass storage, drag and drop, DivX/XviD playing, half the cost Creative Zen.

Say what you want about the customer service (it definitely has been steadily improving), but don't hate on the Mogul just because VZW didn't get it. It's also pretty easy to say the "network sux" and the "mogul sux" without backing it up.

And "good price"? With VZW? LOL!! That's the best one I've heard all week! If you want to roll with an all you can eat plan, it's $139.99! That's nearly $1,000 more than Sprint over the course of a 2-year contract! My Mogul does whatever I need it to do, wherever I need it to do it and I bought an Xbox 360 and a PS3 with that money I didn't give to Verizon.

Any true cell phone fanatic would never back Sprint. If you know anything about the industry you would know that Sprint has lost customer base every quarter since the start of 2007. That is unheard of in this industry. So please, don't defend Sprint unless you know the facts. Why in the world would Sprint be the only company to offer a simply everything plan for $99.99? Why do they need their CEO in a black and white commercial trying to appeal to its customer's hearts? Sprint is going down quickly and they are trying everything to rebound. For every new activation Sprint gets, 5 of their customers leave. If you want to know who the best is, trust a company that is non-biased...Consumer Reports. VZW wins every year.

Yet they still have over 50 million customers, are the 3rd largest carrier in the united states and are worth something like 50 billion. They are doing what any company in there position would do to try to ensure their survival, the million dollar question is, will it work? Not defending... just merely stating facts.

Who cares why the Simply Everything is $99.99? Bottom line is: it costs less and offers terrific benefits. The Simply Everything changed the game. Sprint offers very comparable service to VZW at a tremendous value. If you think that VZW is SO much better that you're willing to pay 30% more, go for it.

I do know the facts. To answer your question: They have to offer the SE at $99.99 and such to make up for the mis-management of the past. The previous CEO(s) made some terrible mistakes by merging with Nextel, doing a terrible job at merging and re-vamping their billing system and outsourcing their customer service.

Also, please show me a source where for every customer Sprintgets, they lose five. That's not even close to accurate. It may have happened for one quarter, but you can't just throw that out there as a broad statement.

i wonder why sprint is losing millions of custmers every quarter and remains to be the cheapest service??? I also see more sprint advertising than any other major carrier.......and verizon does have the mogul, but its called the 6800 smart guy. sprint has the ability to launch phones before vzw because they dont test their product. how is wi-max going? im just waiting to see what is going to happen to that pathetic company. because of cdma, vzw is the only company who could really absorb them, but that wont happen because the customer bas is just too big and the fcc wouldntlet that happen. im sure though at this rate, sprint will only have about 20 mil in a few years and if still in business could get eaten up. good luck with that.

Maybe you should take better care of your credit, if your credit is that bad that justmeans lack of responsibility. i mean how can you have a credit that low to get charged 700, last i checked highest deposit they asked for was $400...... are you in the negatives in your credit score like -120 or something?

lets not forget about those all important ARPU numbers that these wireless companies use. Sprint owns that number averaging bout $55 per subscriber while Verizon and ATT average in the mid $40's. But with so many rumors abound about a takeover you cant help but wonder if Sprint maybe waited a tad too long before it started straightning itself out like you said well have to watch and see.

Lol, wow are you serious. I know for a fact that you are lieing about that $700 deposit. Last i checked it was a $400 deposit. $300 when you do your math right. And you should be embarassed to yap it out to everyone that you had to pay a $700 deposit to get a phone. Can we say "unsightly credit." lol. On my opinion on sprints network, yeah its good that you are paying a good price for your service but as a consumer its never good to hear that your carrier all of a sudden decides to cut off your service when they decide your being a liability to them.

You obviously don't know what you are talking about because vzw only has 2 deposits, they are either $400 or $125. Clearly you know what your talking about. You all know need to do some research into Sprint with any Business magazine. They are not worth 50 Billion, and they did indeed lose customer base every quarter since 2007. Look it up before you try and argue the fact. The only reason they have 50 million customers is because they merged with Nextel and gained their 20+ million.

Actually the reason why my credit is so bad is because I have bad taste in women, the last one stole nearly $50,000.00 of company equipment (but because I'm in Oregon and it was a Sole Ownership and I was with her for over 6 months it was considered "communial property"), took my check book and started writing checks everywhere while I was at work, used my ATM card at one atm to make a "deposit" and withdraw the "deposited money" in another all while I was at work. So now I'm in checksystems and unable to get a bank account. I'm stuck with a prepaid credit card for another 2 years and I actually only owe about $3,000 to misc companies according to my Experian Credit report. So yeah, Verizon needs to implement a plan like that (ASL Accounts) and they would completely slam the market. I would jump ship ETF and all if they did that.

First of all why are you guys worrying about 2-5 pixels unused? I mean it's not like half a screen or something, what difference would 2-5 pixels make seriously. You need to have a border of unused pixels around the screen so its better for you to see the items in the screen. What if there were no unused pixels and then all of you would start bitchin that the items in the screen are way to close to the edge of the screen. Common.

Second of all, if data is lost while syncing up I'm pretty sure that's an iTunes problem not an iPhone problem. Because it is iTunes taking the information in from the phone, not the other way around. My friend had the same problem until he noticed that he accidentally turned the "replace data" setting on in iTunes.

Then I'm pretty sure that your phone freezes up or restarts while opening an app or while running a specific app; which means that the issue there is not the phone itself but the script that's making the application run has a glitch or it was poorly coded.

Also, I called T-Mobile and AT&T stores and they said that lately SIM cards themselves have been experiencing problems from not activating to dropping calls to completely erroring out. Defective from manufacturers. So again not an iPhone issue but SIM card issue.

People lets stop making excuses to make the iPhone look bad because after all it just makes all of us look bad. Just because something went wrong doesn't mean that the phone is bad, think deeper into what could actually have caused the problem/issue itself.

Thats not the point. The point is that you shouldn't have to worry about these problems. Its great that you don't care if pixels are unused or a loss of data the point is that we shouldn't be discussing it because those problems shouldn't exist. Especially with the high rated 'ibrick' I mean phone :)

To szaldana; 1sy off he said "Pixel Rows" not 5 or 6 pixels which is still unacceptable. Would you go buy a brand new TV that had 5 or 6 pixels out on it, I dont think so and a tv has a much larger viewing surface so those pixels would be a tad harder to detect but you would still see them and they would still interfere with the picture. Anybody would have the right to complain about that and if it turns out that that's a common problem then that's bad business on Apple's part. That's not bashing that's fact.

Secondly, it's being reported that data is being lost not replaced. It doesnt matter if it's the phone itself or the Itunes software, they were made to work together, they are marketed to work together and the company expects them to work together so in the eyes of the customer plain an simple, they should work together.

Third, while there seems to be some sim card related issues being reported there are a lot of issues that seem to be direclty related to the phone itself. The bottom line is that the customer expects to get a good product that works the way it is touted to work. They not only expect better from a company like apple but they should get better, after all it's the customer that keeps them in business period.

A good company (which based on their employees, stock price, market growth and past products and service), Apple is, and they know what to do with customer complaints. If no one complained about the issues they were experiencing it would take them a long time to fix them if they would get fixed at all afterall the phone was released with these issues. Apple knows how to filter legitimate complaints from hater (as people are calling it) rhetoric.

I guess just like there are "Haters" there has to be an opposite, we'll have to call them "Lovers". Lover's follow a company blindly, making excuses as to why a company is never at fault walking around with horse shutters seeing only what the company puts in front of them, and having an overwhelming desire to defend their company to there arch rivals the Haters which makes no sense because deep down those Haters are Lovers themselves vigorously defending there company in this case their precious windows products. Meanwhile the companies you both love soo much neither loves you more or less then the next customer, they are indifferent, it's a business and the bottom line is the dollar, but...the good ones know that the diference between some money and a lot of money is how well they treat their customers and how good a product they put out.

I'm sorry my friend but apple made itself look bad all by itself this time.

Apple made themselves look bad? Out of the MILLIONS of 3G iPhones sold, how many have these problems? Add to that the MILLIONS of 1st gen iPhones sold and I can see how it makes apple look bad.

Last time I heard they were at just over a million Iphone 3g's sold but that's just what I heard, I dont know where they're at now since Apple hasn't released their Iphone 3g sales numbers yet. It's not about how many they sold it's about the fact that there are enough people reporting problems that it's being reported in every blog and tech web page you come across even cable news is getting a lil piece of the reporting action, that's a lot of problems. So I would agree that THIS TIME (being the key phrase), they did make themselves look bad. But then I guess a "Lover" (as comment 66 says), wouldn't see that. As for me I'm neutral, I dont get paid to defend the mistakes of Apple or any other company for that matter.

The iPOOP is a complete piece of JOBS t*rd and CON job - IS the MOST fault ridden, functionless, atroucious battery life RIP OFF in the entire history of Mobile Phone. The only good thing about it will take the half dead (well clearly from this botched product) STEVE JOBS and BURRY him permanently

How many windows fans did you hear raving + ranting how great Vista was ? .....NONE!!!! The truth is it is only Apple fanatics who are blind and deluded because unlike window fantics who choose there IT stuff for its function + practical use/flexibilty/range of choice to match personal tastes and choice EXACTLY, at EXACTLY the PERSONAL PRICE suitable rather than how Pretty it looks or how COOL it makes them joining such an tiny, small,PRIVELIGED special group (re INSIGNIFICANT and UNWANTED + REJECTED by the WORLD and his DOG as a SERIOUS COMPUTER PLATFORM (*SNIGGERS* hahhahhaHAHHA). I mean it only unexperienced shallow college kids + children and Artists who have no clue about IT that make up Apple customer base and easilly led by propaganda not being trained in science they are just to dumb and ignorant to be able to make any objective choices and comparrisons with IT, so Apple can fool them easilly with any old hyperbole and so they believe the propaganda easilly and support any piece of SH.1te that Apple come out with eg the 3G iPHONE. BYE BYE Apple user of the stupid once too often *FLUSHES*

i think we all need to stand up and fight the man. we should all get together and bring apple down. all apple continues to do is take advantage of you dumb consumers out there by painting their products a shiny color. just because you own an apple product does not mean your status in society is higher, it actually means it is lower because of the sacrifice you make for a piece of shit product for twice the price and lesser compatibility.

lets chop down the apple tree...who is with me?
