11. vx5400 versus W490 vs sanyo

I have had about 4 cell phones now: I recently decided to put the cell phone companies up on their word of 30 day trial and ordered a T-mobile moto W490, and a verizon vx5400. I also have a Sprint sanyo vi-2300. I have always liked phones with analog (true tri-mode) because I like to be in ear shot in case of emergency wherever I am---and I live near the mountains in Denver. Anyhow, the sanyo phone is a good sturdy trimode--but it has always had bad reception. I got the W490 and thought it would be great due to expandable memory, mp3 player, camera, size, and most importantly battery life. My conclusion of the moto is that the battery life is bad, both earpiece and speaker are soft, mp3 player is buried in menus and works slow, and most importantly the menus are HORRIBLY confusing. The w490 is a kid's toy with a nice screen, not a nice quality phone. (I'm 33 yrs old, and an engineer)
Finally, for the vx5400-- I got it last night, and within 15 minutes had decided that this phone was better than both my previous phones combined. It's nice to see a carrier offering phones with still some support for the analog towers--just in case. It has very simple to access functionality, so far the battery is still on full bars (but I've only text msgd maybe 6-7 times, and barely talked on it). Verizon is better than what I expected for CDMA in denver. The screen resolution is not the greatest, but is clear and has large clocks and numbers. The camera on the phone is VGA, not state of the art, but the front screen is used as a viewfinder -- so you can take pics of yourself while seeing yourself! The speaker and earpiece quality of the vx5400 is great-- loud and clear. All buttons make sense to me. the one outstanding feature of this phone is the voice recognition--it is excellent, and the phone talks to you too---it tells you the number or name of the contact as you receive a txt msg or phone call (of course you can turn that function off). The phone size is perfect--not extremely thin, but good, and the weight is very very light! The vibrate mechanism is sorta old school, but it works and is strong.
It is a simple phone, but hey I'll use my mp3 player for music, and my nice camera for pictures, and this phone to make very easy, clear, and annoyance-free calls and txt messages, who would have thought! Oh, and how is that mp3 player going to help you if your out camping at night with a bear outside your tent??

All I want from a phone is to talk on it. I never had a better one than the VX5400 for talking. Reception is 10 out of 10; speech clarity is terrific. Bluetooth is flawless. Battery lasts forever, it seems. This is NOT a phone for games, TV, etc. - but if you want a really great (and CHEAP) phone for talking, you'll never beat this one. It's really just about perfect for me.

I recently switched to Verizon with the rest of my family. I started out with a samsung u410 phone that they gave me free for getting a phone with them. The samsung phone was terrible. It had crappy battery life (2-3 days if you were lucky) and the phone echoed whatever I said back in my ear.
I then switched to this LG vx5400 phone and love it. The battery life and quality is outstanding.

I use a phone to talk and send an occasional text message. I don't care about music, TV, VCast, Get it Now, or anything else except talking. And I have never once owned a phone that could do a better job of just letting me talk!! The reception is so good that I would have to call it "perfect", the earpiece clarity is terrific, the battery lasts for so long that I can hardly believe it, and the phone is so easy to use that it felt totally comfortable in my hands after 1 day. I have owned the phone more than 3 weeks now, and I am still amazed at how good it is. This is a no frills phone for people who use a cell phone to talk; I've never owned a phone that was better at letting me talk!!. A superior product. Couldn't recommend it more!

also excellent. If you want no frills phone, this is the one to get it.

17. Great phone for the money: Reception, features, loud, mp3 ringtones, stylish, super battery life

I've had this phone for about a week, and overall, it is an excellent phone. One of the best features is the voice command which does not require any setup or voice training. You push a side button, and then tell the phone who to call (by contact name or by speaking the phone number).
MP3 ringtones are especially crisp and clear on this phone (I used Bitpim and Bluetooth to upload mp3s). All of the preloaded ringers are very loud. The phone has a lot of memory (38mb) to store mp3s and images, which means you can assign a lot of ringer ids (and picture ids). When using the phone, the earpiece sound quality is A+.
Reception and battery life are excellent, and recharging appears to be super fast as well. A few times, the phone has completely recharged within minutes of being plugged in to the charger. As for reception, I have yet to lose or drop a call. And all of this is accomplished with no external antenna.
The front of the phone is much more appealing than the images show. The front LCD display, when off, disappears into what looks like a mirrored inset.
The only negative that I can say about the phone is that it is so lightweight and slim, sometimes it is difficult to keep a good grip on it when flipping the cover open (I have big hands). That's not much to complain about, though, and I'd guess that most people won't even find this to be a problem.
For anyone looking for an attractive basic phone with exceptional features, the VX5400 is a great phone for the money.

I liked my old LG phone but this is even better. I've had it 2 weeks now and this morning I'm just playing around with some of the features. For me it all comes now to how it works as a phone. We have 4 cell phones in the house, all Verizon, but various cell phone brands. This by far gets the best signal and I think the best sound quality of all four. We live in a fringe area so cell phone receiption usually is not the best. If it has any problems I haven't found them yet.
The best part was that it was free after the $50 rebate.

19. Very Satisfied! Great for remote areas!

My husband had a Motorola W385 that he was told would get great service out in the woods where we live. He was also told this was a tri-mode phone. We found out that was not true. After a month with the Motorola he was very unhappy. I'm sure it's a good phone, but it did not work well with the area we are in.
I called the store where he bought it and because he was 1 day past the 30 day exchange timeframe, the referred me to Verizon Customer Service. Verizon ultimately agreed to let him pick another phone because of the problems we had and because he was only one day past the 30 days.
I researched phones for him and found 3 tri-mode phones. Tri-mode phones work better in our area because they can still pick up the analog which allows us to get signal at home. I know digital is coming on strong and analog will not be around forever but for now it's what works for us.
I ordered the LG VX5400 for him and he loves it! The battery life has been outstanding, he has 2 bars of signal at home which is incredible for us and can stand in the kitchen or living room and talk without having to go outside on the deck or stand by the door. The Motorola would not even connect a call in our area. The size is very nice. I think it tends to look bigger in pictures but it really fits in your hand or pocket comfortably. The menu is easy to use and the buttons are easy to press without hitting other numbers. The sound is very good too.
As with the first reviewers statement, my husband can hear this phone! He could never hear the Motorola and couldn't feel it vibrate in his pocket. No problem with this phone! He is very satisfied. If you live in a remote area and want a nice quality phone that is not bare bones basic, give this phone a try. I don't think you will be disappointed!
BTW...It's also very lightweight.

My wife and I recently bought two VX5400s. We had two VX5200s and own a VX5300 as a business phone. Dependable reliable use-and-go phones are what we need. My impressions so far after 2 weeks of use:
I haven't had time to try all of the features, but this phone has very long talk time, more than any other phone I've ever owned, and it charges quickly. I love both of those features. The charger plugin is slightly different, but was easy to adjust to after reading the manual.
The speaker phone is much better than the VX5200, with better sound quality. The bluetooth feature is also easy to setup and use, with good sound quality. The bluetooth works fine with Motorola headsets and our 2007 Toyota Camry bluetooth feature, with no issues or problems. I use the Web 2.0 to check investments and to read the occasional news article. Once the VX5400 connects and the first webpage comes up, it surfs much faster than the VX5200 did, and I appreciate those time savings.
The phone is more attractive than the pictures suggest. The clam shell body is slightly larger than the VX5300, but has no antenna. The mirrored external display is nice. The phone is noticably lighter than the VX5200 and a little lighter than the VX5300. Even without the external antenna, the reception of the VX5400 (a Tri-Mode phone) is at least as good as either the VX5200 or VX5300 (also Tri-Mode phones) in the places I've tried so far.
I can only speak to usability in this review, as I haven't tried all the features yet (though I want to try VZ Navigator). So for usability, these phones have been perfect so far, with no issues or problems. I think the phones were a tad pricey for basic phones, but expect prices will come down as this phone becomes more available. As long as the VX5400 remains this dependable and usable, the price will be worth it.
