LG Dare Review

LG has been a leader in the touchscreen non-smart phone market since 2007 with their introduction of the PRADA GSM model in Europe. Since then, they have developed and released additional touchscreen phones, such as the Voyager, Glimmer, Vu, and Viewty; each with their own unique features. The newest device to be released is the Dare, which is available through Verizon Wireless...

Both my girlfriend and I got the dare the day it launched in the stores and both of the them are having the same problems. 1) When I try to go into display settings the phone power cycles and will not let me change any settings. 2) The time and date has dissapeared from the screen and I cannot get it back because I can't edit the display settings 3) The face detection works about half the time...when I call a 800 number or even voicemail I often cannot get the phone screen to light up again so I can press numbers to enter passwords or navigate the menu. I've been looking around these sites for a while and it seems like no one has had these issues. Did we just get two bad phones out of the same batch or is there an issue with the software. Also the phones worked perfectly for about a day before these issues started occuring.

sounds like you have a few phones in a bad batch. we normally see repeat problems come in that are out of the same batch. go exchange those phones before your 30 day wfg is up

I am still using the original EnV and am considering upgrading to the Dare. When calling someone while driving, I could, with one hand push the key Contacts, then select the alphabet form the hard key to select the person I want to call. For the Dare, can you do this with one hand even though there is no hard key to push?

There's an icon on the screen which when touched allows you to say the phone number you want to dial ...and it works very well.

Does anyone know if sounds can be used as ringtones. I really hate paying verizon for ringtones, especially because they don't have many I like to begin with.

Yes, I'm using an mp3 I sent to the phone as a ringtone. Try this link: http://www.funformobile.com/pages/ringtone/uploadRingtone.php It works well.

I'm planning on buying the Dare on Friday morning (payday). I own an apple macbook, does anyone know if the software and phone are compatible with a Mac? It's not the end of the world if they aren't, but would be a nice thing to know before purchase.

The LG-Dare is light years ahead of any cellphone offered by Verizon. It's easy to use and you discover daily additional features (at least how you can use them). Fortunately it's not a GCM iPhone. At least where I live, you are lucky to get a signal when using AT&T, aka Cingular. Several have commented on how Verizon should incentivise the sale of the Dare by giving a discount to existing customers. I disagree, when you have the best, most reliable service, you don't have to get into promoting a product to get people to stay. Customers will likely not ditch Verizon and move to a less reliable service provider regardless of how Verizon prices this phone. It's good business not only talk the talk of offering the best service with the fewest dropped calls but to actually put their money with their mouth is. Word of mouth advertising for Verizon's reliable service sells far more phones than their "can you here me now" ad campaign.

I am a rep for Verizon and we do offer our loyal customers an extra incentive to upgrade when available. Noone else does this, it is the New Every two program. If you are billed at $35 or higher on a plan you get either a $50 or $100 credit off of the new customer pricing. We do this because we cannot be the best carrier without our loyal customers. Sure new customers are a big thing, but in order to become the biggest we must retain current customers. The Dare is a great phone and should not be compared to the iphone since they are two different things. If you want an iphone and a great network then maybe you should look at the 6900. It may not have all the innovative things the iphone offers, but at least you will be able to use it to make calls, text message, and browse the web.

do you, or anyone, know if the New Every 2 discount is able to be applied online? I went into my local Verizon store recently and inquired about pricing for upgrading my phone (I'll have to save for it), and they guys in there just kept quoting me the new customer 2 year contract price with no discount, even after I repeated that I was eligible for and wanted to know the price with the new every 2 discount (I've been a Verizon customer for 6 or 7 years now, so I know the new every 2 thing very well. I would rather not have to go into the store to get my new phone (which is definitely going to be the DARE!) because the guys here are morons and we only have one official Verizon store, so I'd like to take care of it all online, just don't know if that's possible...

Yes, just log into your My Account on Verizon's website, or create one if you don't have one. There will be a picture of your phone off to the center right, click on the Go button. There will be a little icon that shows when your new every two is up, when its up, click on upgrade and it will show your new every two discount. Additional Bonus for shopping online is the Online Discount, which is normally the mail in rebate that you would get at the store with no fuss. I recommend going online or calling VZ directly over going into the store, those people are mostly sales people that know nothing more then sales and arent willing to help you get the best service. But Customer Service and Online are much better.

If Verizon was so great and loyal to their customers than maybe they'd be nice enough to invest in giving customers who have invested in the Family Share Plan the same benefits of the credits after spending years on the plan. I pay you to keep my phone, I pay you every time I go over my minutes, so why not give me the benefits that others have?
Just because I'm a "secondary" doesn't mean I'm not a customer.

The reason that you don't get the ne2 benefits is because when it comes down to it your line is only charged at $10 per months which is not enought to eat more cost on a phone when you upgrade, which is in turn why you have to pay a $20 processing fee to upgrade in the store. Now, if your have been a customer with us for a while and yoru primary line is over $80 per months then you should at least be a merits or VIP customer which waves your processing fees, activations fees, give you a one time overage credit, and also signs you up for overage protection alerts. No other carrier offers this and no other carrier offers the ne2 credit. You can tkae the ne2 credit from the primary line by doing an alternate upgrade.

you should go into the store and get some hands on time with the phones to find the one you like best. for all you know you wont like the dare, its easier to go look around then to have to ship a phone back because you dont like it. save yourself the hassle. Also, not all sales reps are morons actually. they sell the product every day so they are knowledgable with what they sell. They dont get paid more to sell you the more pricey phones either. there commission is based off of activations and upgrades as well as data and accessory sales

I just have to say that this phone will definitely be my next purchase. the reviews all look great, the phone looks awesome, and for once someone was smart enough to make a touch screen phone (for Verizon at least) where you didn't HAVE to use a QWERTY keypad to compose text messages. I am missing half of one of my thumbs (argument with a power saw) and am unable to use the small qwerty keyboards effectively whether they are mechanical or touch screen. Which is why immediately nixed the env2, voyager, etc. when looking for a new phone.

ok, sorry, shouldn't have said HAVE to use the qwerty, 'cause i realize that with the env2, glyde, etc. it does give you an option to use the on screen "telephone style" keypad, but then I'd be buying a useless brick to carry around, 'cause I can't make use of the qwerty keyboard

I'm a current customer and was told I have to change to a nationwide plan for the dare. The forced change will cut my minutes in half for the same price since I've been with Verizon a long time and have a great plan. I might as well look at the iphone now since the only reason I was staying with Verizon was I didn't want to loose my plan. The only thing that I like about the dare above the iphone is you can carry it in your pocket.

that's Smart,,, you want to leave Verizon because they want to raise your plan, because you've held on to an ancient plan forever. So you're going to go to ATT and pay ever more than verizon's nationwide premium plan to get the I-phone? you're probably exactly the kind of person Verizon is happy to lose to ATT...Cheap and with no loyalty

it may not be smart to switch to att becuz from what ive heard (uncredited) the network sucks, but it is bull shit that verizon makes you switch your plan in order to get the new high end phones. Cheap and no loyalty? Only an idiot is willing to pay more than the best price for a given situation. Brand loyalty, you need to get your priorities straight... i'm loyal to the company that gives me the best product for the best price

you just proved my point...verizon has better coverage and their plan for ANY phone (excluding PDA's) on a premium plan is chaeper than the REQUIRED plan for the I-phone, and gives you moore feats

Anyone know if there is a free email client available that can use the vcast network to get email? Seems odd that after paying $15 / month to get internet access then you have to pay another $5 / mo to get your email.

I'm loving my new iphone 3G.... My friend has the Dare... E-mail is better on the iphone... The Dare does not have a separate E-mail client unlike the iphone... You have to read e-mail through the browser which sucks

What are the chances that an application in on its way to provide free email on this phone? I think 5/mo is asking too much.

The built in Mail app installed in the iphone supports gmail, yahoo mail, AOL Mail, Mobile Me, Microsoft exchange, or any other IMAP or POP 3 accounts...

You can sign up for a gmail, AOL, and Yahoo account for free at their websites...

i talked to someone from Verizon today, and the Dare is selling so well that there are stock outage worries. So i guess all the Apple fanboys may have to take back the "the i-phone will kill verizon" predictions, huh?

I haven't seen any lines yet for the Dare... As of Monday, there are still hundreds waiting for iphones that are in line... AT&T are sold out across the US but I heard some Apple Stores have plenty (They stock up overnight to over 1,500 units for some stores)...

One million sold in just 72 hours! Quite amazing! Now how many units has the Dare sold?
