I have had this phone for several months and love it so far. Far superior to the other phones ive had (4). The fasttap text feature is the best ive seen and the keypad functions very well. The backlighting is good. Sound clarity is good the opnly negative is at times it seems to amplify background noises. Battery life is excellent. Reception seems to be on par for the area I live in. For a vga camera it is decent, not the best of course but if you buy a cell phone for a digital camera you have issues. The only feature I wish it had would be all time TIME display on the flipface. I bought my phone for 29 dollars with a two year plan and other than the really cheap free phone offered it was by far the best value. If you text you must have this phone. And, if you dont its still an all around good phone.

A pretty average phone under that fancy keypad.

I got this phone from Telus up here in Canada a month ago, and have found it to work well so far.

The Fastap keyboard, the things that seems to always come up first when talking about this phone, really works quite well. I thought I would find the cramped keypad with its very small numbers and letters hard to use, but even with my big clumsy fingers, I rarely (if ever) hit the wrong buttons. When you do, the phone's software usually figures out what you meant to press, ruling out any frustration. Once you have a rough idea of where the letters are, the Fastap keyboard is just as quick or quicker than T9, and to me, a lot more comfortable. It's like typing on a computer, and we're all used to that.

As for the rest of the phone, well, it's not that exceptional. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a bad phone by any means. Quality-wise, I've found the AX490 to be outstanding thus far. Sound clarity is good and the screens are good, although the inside one has to be viewed from just the perfect angle to be readable, which gets annoying. It's just that when compared to similarly priced phones, you aren't getting a ton of features... certainly nothing that stands out. All the standard stuff, nothing else. The camera really isn't great at all. Probably the worst I've seen on a cell phone. It won't even adjust its light sensitivity automatically like most. I also find that for such a plain phone, the menus are needlessly complicated. My last phone was a Kyocera, which are supposed to be "easy to use", so maybe it's just me. Friends of mine had the same complaints, though.

Speaking of friends, and communicating with people, well that's what this phone is all about. Its really neat sports car looks get comments from everybody, with its headlights and a little windshield, and awesome charcoal/black color. The phone is very obviously geared towards somebody who likes to keep in touch with friends, co-workers, family etc; somebody who doesn't want all the fanciest features and extras, but just wants a solid, reliable phone that's a little bit fun and different. The emphasis is on communication here; the AX490 is a messenging phone through and through, and as a reliable messenging phone, it does a good enough job.
