Global VZ Navigator to launch with Storm in Q1

advertisment:
Sure the BlackBerry Storm has fizzled down a little bit since its launch in November. But we received news that the device will be the first to utilize VZ Navigator globally. It makes clear sense to initiate it with the Storm because it is one of the few devices in Verizon’s lineup to be a world phone. The service will cost $20 per month and will get underway in the first quarter of 2009. Some of the countries that the software will support during its first phase will be Mexico, Canada, France, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom during. Austria and Belgium are some of the other countries that will be supported during its second phase which will begin in the second quarter of 2009.

WOW... that is pretty cool that they will make it global.... but doesn't google maps work in all of those places already? Are their GPS location settings that would prevent a US smartphone from using GPS in another country? I heard that GPS in unlocked in the Curve and pearl for VZW on the 4.5 sw, is it not unlocked yet for the Storm? Let the answer begin...

Yes it's unlocked, duh. There is a difference between google maps and vz nav. vz nav will give you turn by turn directions and has a few other features that google maps don't have. Google maps you can pull up your gps and get directions like you were getting them from a comp, but they are in no way turn by turn directions. BIG DIFFERENCE.

You are stupid, and scream verizon customer service rep who doesn't know anything about PDA/Smartphones, most likely has a curve, and doesn't know how to use it. There is a difference between unlocked GPS that would allow other applications. Garmin, Telenav, Googlemaps and Blackberry maps to work... now read carefully you ignorant moron. WITHOUT HAVING TO PAY 9.99. This would mean the GPS is unlocked, or not requiring special access to be used, and open to other programs that can use GPS functionality. Google maps does do Turn by turn dirctions, the difference is that it doesn't speak them to you. Get educated before you criticize someone you piece of garbage care rep.

Then why is it every single website tells you that's unlocked? I guess every single website is wrong. And if google does do turn by turn directions on unlocked devices, why can't the iphone do turn by turn then. lol, you ask the question so you obviously don't know and then when someone answers you, you show how stupid you really are. I have the storm and use 3rd party apps with the gps so yes, it is unlocked. Sorry to burst your bubble. Maybe you should check your info before coming off like a bligerant moron.

the iPhone does do turn by turn, just not audible turn by turn you tool. Ask anyone in your technical support department. I was asking for someone who has a storm to test it out, not an incompetent moron like you.

also, what 3rd party apps are you using on your imaginary storm. list them, list the tests you have complete to check the location based services that were detected for your phone as I do not believe you, because like I said earlier, you are most likely an incompetent customer service rep that knows nothing about data, as you didn't refute that claim earlier.

Well...It seems as if he didn't know. Hey I work in tech support and as far as I know, the device is capable of using VZNavigator and VZNavigator only at this point. So whether that is considered unlocked or locked, i'm not sure. In order to truly unlock the GPS capability of the phone, RIM would have to issue a software release to update this capability. There are rumors on this being on the .83 release but no official word yet.

My real question is they said they were going to do another review of the storm once the software update came out. The software update has been out for over a month and half and yet there is no update on the review. When the iphone came out they did an updated review practically after every sw updgrade. Sounds a bit strange to me.
