BlackBerry Storm set to launch November 15th

Over on HowardForums, VZW E has reported that the highly anticipated BlackBerry Storm will be available at corporate stores beginning on Nov 15th and the following day at BestBuy locations. Due to the high demand, corporate stores will also be opening 1 hour early during the first week of the release. Unfortunately, pricing is still unknown at this point.

He also posted a screen shot of the Storm's accessories that will be available at launch.

Unless you bought your Dare at full retail you wont be eiligible for an upgrade, so for the Storm you will be looking at full retail and I can guarentee you this will full retail well above $300

Full retail means the unsubsidized price...like if your contract isn't up for renewal yet, or you aren't eligble for your new every two plan yet. The full retail is rumored in the $500-$600 range, while contracted (subsidized) price is flipping back and forth between $0, $99, $149, and $199 (I've seen most all of these on the internet the past couple of months, and these 4 prices seem to be the most widely accepted).

Ok, i need to get a new phone and i need one from VZW, that has the best e-mail and text messaging capabilities.
Ex. on my Q, i have to go to a menu and request that my new emails be sent to me. I want them to come in just like text messages and be ready for me to check them when i look at my phone.
I really need help. PLEASE HELP ANYONE WITH BRAINS >_>

blackberrys will "push" and alert you when you get an email.. just use the set up wizard and it will give you different time intervals that it pushes the emails... the most common is five minutes... so every five minutes it checks and if you have an email it alerts you and its right there on the phone.

wrong - blackberries receive/push your emails through instantly. There is no wait time. I usually get my email on my blackberry before it even hits my gmail.

no your wrong, It pings the system every fifteen minutes until it recieves an email and then every five after it recieves an email, then back to fifteen after it has recieved an email within the five minutes

Actually you are wrong; Blackberries can be setup in 2 ways, through a BES or BIS. If a Blackberry is through a BES the time interval can be adjusted. If setup through BIS it is carrier dependant. For example T-mobile has set their servers to push out every 15 min. This varies on exactly how quick you will receive your email, anywhere between 5 sec to 20 mins, probability shows that if you get a new email with a 15 min send time you will receive an email on your blackberry in 50% of the time the carrier has set the push.update.time variable, 7.5 mins on average.

I have the curve and sell for Verizon and I get my E-mails instantly, work and personal. All of my e-mails have came to my blackberry before my actualy e mail. Blackberrys are the best phones for e-mail. In fact I like my Curve more then my voyager and dare

it's impossible for your email to hit your phone before your email server -- that doesn't even make sense.

The way these work is usally (BIS method) - checking the server every couple of minutes (set interval on the phone or provider, depends on phone and provider - this one looks like VZW + Storm = 5sec - 5min interval) for new mail. If you have no mail *on the mail server*, you won't get it on the blackberry. hence, why it's impossible for you to receive e-mail you haven't yet received.

For corporate environments (BES method) - the BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server) acts as the mail server for your (often) work account - this is what the BlackBerry "syncs" with.

The lag you may be experiencing could come from a client that you use (Outlook, Thunderbird, KMail, Evolution, etc), as each of these have intervals they check mail with. If your company/mail server uses POP, there is probably going to be a lag. If IMAP/Exchange, they use the same "Push" technology that the Storm utilizes - email is instantly sent and received by maintaining a constant connection with the server. IMAP is usually (from my experience as an Exchange Administrator) slower at updating the Push data than Exchange.

If WiFi is so important why don't they just throw in satellite TV as well? Why not have the ability to start your car remotely too? Or wirelessly play your Xbox Live Arcade games by waving the phone around in the air like a Wii-mote?

Cell phones are basically complicated radio transceivers that send and receive transmissions that run using a set of frequencies. Different technologies like CDMA voice, GSM voice, PDC, EVDO, EDGE, HSPA, and HMTS all use different frequencies to send and receive information. When you send and receive information using so many different frequencies they can cause problems if they are not compensated for. Since VZW has the largest 3G network covering most of the U.S. and RIM has already added frequencies compatible with all of the previous , adding in WiFi would not be very cost-effective; the development would take a lot longer and the quality of the finished product might not be as good (it might be as bad as the 3G iPhone, where some users were dropping up to 36% of their calls due to conflicts in switching frequencies from 2G to 3G in areas where they shouldn't be having those problems.) The fact that they can do this much is amazing in itself. There's only so much tech they can cram into a machine that fits in the palm of your hand... Besides WiFi isn't available in a lot of places EVDO is; whatever difference there is in speed doesn't measure up to the fact that if I want that speed I have to stay inside the coffee shop (used as one example of WiFi service area)!

Wi Fi is extremely important... all 3G networks are way too slow... Sure while on the road you have to deal with the broadband EVDO speeds... But soon there will be wireless access points broadcasting through out most major cities... it would have been an easy and nice feature to add... while you are at home or in a coffee shop it would have made browsing the Internet way more enjoyable... It's a shame they did not add this feature... They are giving the iPhone the upper hand here... #49 nice copy and paste job... Cell phones will be doing lots more after 6 months of the Storms release...

If you think wifi is worthless you're worthless.... OR maybe it's because you've been with VZW who never gets any phones with Wifi and you don't know the true capabilities and benefits of having it. Wifi isnt' that hard of a thing to incorporate, VZW is just retarded and doens't want it on any of their phones. it's like the MMS iPhone gripe, simple thing that it should obviously have, just like any phone that's a high-end PDA should have wifi, it's that simple. They don't have 3G everywhere, and it's not that great where they do have it. Incoporate wifi and you have the speeds you want PERIOD.

Let's see, VZW's EVDO Rev-A which blankets over 80% of the US population... does FREE WiFi (key word is free cause a lot of WiFi you find makes you pay to use it) cover anywhere close to 80% of the US population? ABSOLUTELY NOT. I'll take 3G in a heartbeat.

Pity. This isn't VZW's weakness. RIM simply didn't put WiFi on this device, but go ahead and ignore the overwhelming evidence that it is not necessary at all when you have VZW's superb 3G coverage.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I couldn't give a darn about wifi. That doesn't make or break a phone for me. For me, the main thing is battery life! The ability to record/play back video, camera photo editing options and flash, internet access are important to me as well. Speed, kinda sorta. Just as long as I can get on. I've been with T-Mobile for a few years now n' one of the things that burns me up about them is gettin' on the web...when I CAN get on the web. I'm so used to getting error messages now due to poor signal strength, I don't know what to do. Oh yes I do! Happily drop kick the pink-T as soon as The Storm comes out! The Storm will be my first BlackBerry. Everybody I know who owns one tells me nothing but great things about BB battery life. I'm hearin' the same about the Storm.

115: Don't you know that the manufacturer makes what the carrier wants them to? I am so sick of hearing that we should complain to the manufacturer if the phone doesn't have what we want. It's up to the carrier. This is why the new HTC phones have one set of specs for Sprint and a different spec list for VZW. Did you really think that HTC just decided to leave stuff off of the Verizon models for shits and giggles?

I personally don't need Wifi on my device, but people here should respect the fact that some people want it. How is it helpful to label them poor or stupid? (not singling 115 out on this part) Do you really think you are going to change someone's point of view by calling them names?

well we're very glad that you're making something out of yourself...because you probably have no other talent... it's also very good for you that you get "FREE" WIFI which not many of us are in your shoes being able to just stay in your dorm and scratch your junk with one hand and play with your phone with the other. we wouldn't be having this "discussion" in the first place if there's FREE WIFI EVERYWHERE...unfortunately, unless you're a trillionaire, we don't.

We shouldn't be having this discussion about WIFI or no WIFI anyway. This discussion is about the "VERIZON RIM STORM 9530", that's why there's a big f*$kin' picture of the Storm on top. So those that are saying "...oh you can't save $20-$30 a month, $240-$360 a year" put your damn foot, as matter of fact, put your damn FEET in your mouth, unfortunately while you have a PDA/Smartphone with Verizon, data plan is required so in this case, WIFI or no WIFI does not make a difference WITH THE EXCEPTION OF FEW PLACES WHERE YOU DON'T GET GOOD NETWORK RECEPTION. Thus, giving Verizon policy, because all PDA/Smartphones require data plan, not having WIFI seems like the better decision since that helps lower the price of the phone itself. As one of the fellow writer on this discussion, even if you have WIFI, with bunch of people sharing one network, things are bound to be slow and it can only download and work as fast as your phone allows it. Get over people, there will never be a perfect phone because everyone's needs are different, just admit that Storm is a pretty awesome phone, and i'm pretty sure once Storm's out, 3, 4, 5, 6 months down the road a better phone will come out, that is life...you people are still buying it aren't ya'll? GEEZ

Wi-Fi is inconsequential on these phones. You DO notice a speed increase when you are connected while using the iphone/other blackberry's/WM phones but the processors on all these phones aren't capable of rendering web pages as fast as a full-blown computer. So, my conclusion is that you may as well use the EVDO unless you're somewhere a 3G network doesn't exist. THAT would a reason to have Wi-Fi.

really so do you download entire movies to your phone? because download speeds is the on place that your really going to notice and that assuming is a fast original connection without too many users pulling the bandwidth which is very common in any public wifi spot.. and if your at home get off your lazy a$$ and go to your computer... hey look i have have wifi i can get a this sweet connection at starbucks.. oh wait its loading... still loading... oh there it goes.. man its sooo sweet ... or maybe hey look at me i dont have to roll off my couch to look at facebook i can stay here... oh man im soo sweet.... wifi totally rocks.. ahh thats awesome someone can hack right in to this unsecured connection... thank god for wifi

Speed isn't much different over wifi vs. 3g. At least on the i760 and XV6800, the two Verizon phones that have wifi and 3g. Unless you've got a stopwatch, you can't tell the differnece. And since the Storm requires a data plan, wifi is pretty unnecessary.

Haha, great reply, I thought it was hilarious... and true... As for the price... I'd be willing to sell my second born child, but for my first born, it had better come at some discounted price with cool accessories! hehe. Honestly though, I'm anticipating some ridiculous price to come with this phone, which kind of sucks because the iphone is now selling for $200.00. It'd be nice to wrangle some of those att customers and bring them over to our side and make verizon that much bigger in New York. I bought my voyager for $175.00 with the applicable rebates and discounts, I just hope that I an buy the device with the same discounts when my turn is up!

The only time i would really need wi-fi is when i get off of a plane and find out the carrier I'm on is down in that area and I can't make phone calls or send email, or send sms, happened to me once, and wi-fi would have come in handy.

Having WiFi on a phone with a data plan makes perfect sense and is an absolute necessity for many business people. Why? I am a small business owner and I need email access every day. In the USA, I have my VZW data plan. Outside the USA, I'd be SOL in a lot of places. I used to take my laptop on vacation. Now I take my XV6800...it's just a wee bit smaller and lighter! In a pinch, I can even work on a client's server using the RDP client. Definitely NOT fun, but doable!

Tell me if your data plan gets you Internet access at this location.

20 degrees south latitude
154 degrees west longitude

In case you were wondering, that is roughly 300 miles southwest of Tahiti, in the middle of the ocean. My phone works there for email, using the ship's WiFi...does your non-WiFi phone let you get email there? Mine does, without having to go to AT$T sh*t USA service just for worldwide coverage. Until I need phone voice service in those circumstances, WiFi email will work perfectly.

I can get email at any WiFi hotspot anywhere in the world. If I never left the USA, then I would not need it.

I am amazed that no one mentioned this circumstance yet (unless I missed it).

Gregg

Yeah, WI-FI isnt needed. You have to get the 29.99 data plan on any Blackberry with Verizon. Its the fastest option anyway. Who wants a slower internet where the more people that are on it, the slower it becomes? Theres a reason they dont put Wi-FI on it. I cant wait to check this phone out though.

wait 15 more days and get the pimpin OMNIA...which is not a global phone; true benefit having the STORM is for those who travels internationally and having to keep up with e-mails and wanting the revolutionary phone at the same time. Having played with that device as well as the Storm, OMNIA response time isn't as fast as the Storm, besides, although Storm lack of WIFI, battery time is certainly better than OMNIA.

Given the context, I believe #30 meant the following:

"thew" = through
"there for" = therefor
"wast" = waste (not waist, that's where you wear your belt.)

It is interesting to observe that those who carry on with the most emotion and flames are those who appear to not have graduated 5th grade grammar or spelling. The Internet gives a forum to all. Pity, that.

So a person who is priding himself on correcting others and belittling them apparently needs correction himself.... brilliant
