Verizon is not being a Scrooge at all if the tipster that told this story to BlackBerryOS is correct. The story is that Big Red will allow owners of the first-gen BlackBerry Storm 9530 to buy the Storm2 9550 at the subsidized price if he/she is willing to sign a 2 year contract extension. The price will be $179.99 after a $100 mail-in-rebate, and of course, your signature on the contract extension. As for when this promotion might start, it could be once the BOGO deal for the Storm2 ends in the next few days.

For those who need a refresher, the BlackBerry Storm2 9550 has some features left out in the original model including a vastly improved SurePress clicking virtual keyboard, faster browser, and the elimination of the gaps around the screen that allows light to sneak out in the 9530. On the 9550, the speaker is on the front and the newer model also is a little more streamlined than the original unit. Thanks to a firmware update by Verizon, both models run on the new 5.0 build of the BlackBerry OS. So early adapters, the ball could soon be in your court. Did the OS upgrade do the trick, or are you still dying to get your hands on the Storm2?

If this is true, I find that very noble of Verizon to offer such a thing. The original had a ton of Software issues, and that is nice of Big Red to compensate any issues that the customers has is great!

Couldn't agree more! Although the update makes my Storm really seem like it was supposed to be originally, I won't be getting myself another version of essentially the same phone. I applaud VZW for offering this if it comes to fruition, but I too will consider an Android phone. And then there's always that ever lingering possibility that one of these days a VZW iPhone will show it's head. I know what some of you are thinking, but my Mac computers, MP3 players, etc just work. The iPhone is no different if we are talking about the actual functionality vs. the ominous fact that as a phone, on ATT, it's just terrible. At any rate, this was my first and last BB for a while.

IT WAS SOFTWARE JACKFACE!!! How can you all give me a negative it was software all along..and you see that now, why would VZW offer a device brand new with a 2 year just because they didnt have the software....NO WAY, now when the choclate flopped back in 07 they were more than willing to up to the next gen chocolate, but the storm wasn't a complete failure, there were PLENTY of (and I mean 100's of thousands) customer that were loyal to the device, Why should VZW compinsate the Cry Babies that bought the device to play with and not use...It wasnt the iPhone, people were comparing it and thats not what it is...

Here here PapaJay, read what I wrote pal. Here, "The original had a ton of Software issues, and that is...". I said it had software issues. Verizon did not design the phone or the software, but it was released too early. Here's +1 just for kicks. It WAS a complete failure, until they released more and more software updates. Now, the device is seamless. iPhone is a bit different. First iPhone = FAIL. Second iPhone= 1/2 FAIL. 3GS = a Great Device. Yeah, it took a bit, but they got it right eventually. Now, it just needs a stellar Network.

I think it is awesome that Verizon (and possibly Blackberry) are taking a bit of accountability for releasing the device a bit too early. I think it is very honorable for Verizon to do that. I don't care for Verizon too much, but this I must commend.

This is false, with the phenomenal turn around from 5.0 on the Storm 1 there is no reason VZW will venture to lose money on this. Nice try Phone Arena, the Storm didnt Flop as bad as iPhone, we dont need to compensate our devices because the Storm was all "software" to begin with, hardware was never the problem. VZW didnt have to change the name to Storm 3g either...Although hardware in the Storm 2 is changeing, it is considerd an upgrade to the original device... with backwards compatable Software. remeber people the whole problem from the beginning was the software....and you get that for free...

Yeah...definetly no hardware issues with the Storm 1.
Oh, except for the screen becoming unclickable in certain places and needing a folded up business card under the battery cover to make it work again.
Yeah, no hardware issues at all.

The original Storm was such a bad experience, I'm not sure anyone with that phone is willing to stay with BB. At least, that's how it is in my household.

I disagree. I have the Storm and am intimately familiar with it. I have had no major issues with the phone thanks to the OS upgrades that have been made available.

Having traded up from the Storm to the Storm2, I agree that 80% was software and was fixed with OS5, but the extra memory in the Storm2 makes a ton of difference in programs not bogging the phone down.

there is no reason to upgrade to a storm2 for that price if you have the first gen storm. buy a 16 gb memory card for fifty bucks and be done with it

agreed... I think rumors will get the best of everyone. I highly doubt VZW will offer a trade up... If you are smart, and got the phone the day it came out... Nov 21st. you will just wait and do a one year upgrade... to maybe a DROID???
