A tipster for BGR has brought them information showing that the nation's largest carrier is about to make some changes starting January 18th. New pricing for unlimited minutes includes a $69.99 per month individual option rising to $89.99 monthly with unlimited texts. Family plans will run $119.99 a month for the first two lines with additional users costing $49.99 monthly for unlimited talk, text and data.

The Basic plan will now be titled Nationwide Talk with the Nationwide Talk and Text replacing the Select plan. Featurephone Data plans will run $9.99/month for 25MB of data and mobile email. A monthly price of $29.99 will get you unlimited data and mobile email. Overage fees on the $9.99 plans have been sliced in half from 50 cents to 25 cents per MB. And all 3G Multimedia phones-a category that now includes the LG Chocolate Touch, enV3, enV Touch and others-will require a monthly Data plan of $9.99 or higher. Verizon also made some changes to its pre-paid offerings as Big Red is now making available an unlimited pre-paid plan called Talk and Text which will cost $94.99 per month.

yeah they still are the most greediest! Why should consumers be forced to get a data plan if they won't be using those features. I just find handsets like the enV3 requiring one - it clearly shows VZ's insatiable appetite for money. I know other carrier's might follow the same suit.....but it's unfair to the consumer! We deserve better.

Still more expensive, since almost all phones require some sort of a data plan. these pp dont inlcude data.

Yes, it does seem greedy to require people to add a data feature, but can you really say anything about an "insatiable appetite for money" when they just made the unlimited talk plans waaaay cheaper? Now you can have an unlimited talk and text plan, PLUS a $9.99 data package, for the same price that you would have paid for just unlimited minutes. Where's the greed in that? So basically you take the good with the bad. The people on low minute plans who don't use data won't appreciate the change, but they can get a smooth or an intensity. The people who need a ton of minutes will really appreciate the change, because even after adding a data plan they are still saving money. You can't please everyone all the time. Verizon is trying to please the high tier customer. Can you blame them for making a more attractive offering for customers who are willing to spend more money per month?

They forgot to add on the Advantages area that Sprint offers Any Mobile/Any Time for non Unlimited Plans AND Sprint Navigation, Sprint TV, Sprint Radio, Tethered Texting, Visual Voicemail, (On certain phones) NASCAR and NFL at no additional charge, the other carriers charge you extra for those features. :)

How can they say they are cheaper than the others? Not everyone uses the unlimited. If you look at the $99 family plan with 700 mins plus text. You get 1500mins from Sprint for the same price. Also AT&T and Sprint don't charge you $10 just because you have a 3g device. My kids have 2 phones listed in the 3g multimedia catagory. They just use them for texting, no data or internet. The env's don't even have a real web browser. I have the Dare and the browser on that is crap. This new plan would cost me another 10 bucks per. Now we are going to be forced to get basic phones with very few features to avoid the extra charges. We only use our phones for talk and text. I want to add texting to all of our phones. Might be time to start looking what the other companies have to offer. Verizon might have more 3g than the others but who cares if you don't use it. Before anyone says anything I know it only applies if I change my plan. I am looking to add unlimited texting to my family plan.

So is the $29.99 data on family plans per phone or for the entire account? If it is per phone than I think the Family plans are now MORE expensive if you use a smartphone. I have two Pre's now for $129.99 1500 min on Sprint and if I wanted to switch to VZW for Pre Plus it would be $119.99 for 1400 and then another $59.98 for the data for a total of $179.97 a month? Let me guess Nav is still extra too which is included in my $129.99 now? For what they want to charge I should be able to hog as much bandwith as I want since and free thethering since the data alone would be more than my $45/month At&t Pro DSL.

Good Point, they don't mention that.. Also on T-Mobile If you buy the Discounted Phone through their plan, there is a $30 Data Charge Per line. So its $79.99 Unlimited Voice and Text plus $30 Unlimited Data. The True discount is if you buy the phone at full pop!

They just got rid of the data share option that the Connect and Premium plans offered making each phone have to pay for data and any other extras.

Remember, connect plans were an extra $10 per line for unlimited data on non-smartphones. Now they require the same $10, it just isn't unlimited data anymore, its only 25 mb, which is probably enough for most non smart phone users who don't watch youtube all day. So its just like they are forcing everyone onto a connect plan, and then telling people with envy touches and rogues to back off of youtube or pay $20 more per month, as if they had a smartphone.

Anybody on a Connect plan is probably using more than 25mb of data, so in essence it's forcing them into a higher data pack.

Wow. Plans went down for talkers and texters, but screws anyone that wants either data or any phone better than a Samsung Smooth. Good time to lock into that Connect or Premium plan. SMH.

What these plans are doing is causing a data network war between the carriers. The calling and texting plans are about the same. The difference now will be the data networks coverage, costs, and speeds. That is why Verizon has done what they have done. Now what does T-Mobile have on them? Use to be price, that was it. Now that it is about equal, it comes down to network and power. Once Verizon goes LTE, its over at that point as no other carrier can compete with that for a long time.

The only thing I don't agree with is the 3G requirement for data. The device has to be comprable to force something like that. At this point, the only device then people should be going after is the Rogue because of the browser. At that point and the phones that requrie data, why would you buy any other phone than the Rogue other than a smartphone?

What kills me is all this new talk about metered data billing. When AT&T spoke of doing it they were shredded and totally spoke of as a horrible carrier. Now that Verizon has brought up the idea some are praising the idea. I know that most of the Verizon fans on this site are going to say it's all about the coverage and blah blah blah. What I think is this, it's a proven fact that Att has over double the data devices than any other carrier including Verizon. So we know this is fact. We also know that the iPhone itself takes up all most all of that data because of it's awesome browser. Now that Verizon is actually starting to sell data devices vs just voice the big wigs are starting to see that their network is going to start to see the stress of what actuall data devices can do. Verizon network is built so that their data and voice use the same network. So we all know they have the most voice customers and know as more and more data devices are being added it's going to congest the network. Is metered billing the way? Some will say yes because they feel that why should I pay to support people that use or abuse the data while others are going to say if I pay for it I'll use what ever and how ever much I want. To be honest until they ( being any carrier) do something about it and make the change. As the carriers see more and more data users come online they all will see congestion on the networks. The CDMA carriers will suffer most being like I said having one network doing both data and voice where as GSM having a network for voice and another for data. As much as people don't want to admitt it the iPhone would have crippled any US network it grabbed hold of. Just remember this, Steve Jobs stated that when the iPhone launched it would sell 10,000,000 units within the first year and everyone thought he was crazy and very bold. Well it happened and then some. Not defending AT&T in any reason for the let down but you almost can't put all the blame on them. I just think they take a lot a bad press for stuff that all the other carriers do as well or better yet will soon face with over loaded networks. As for the voice plan pricing dropping, sure. Voice is so cheap these days and hardly any money is made there. Data is the money maker these days and the days of basic phones are over. I really don't have a problem with them charging a premium for certain phones. If they would have made the data plans manditory before vs giving options when getting a BB or Treo or others customers would just asume it and either accept it or go to a different phone. We are just a society that does not deal with change well but understand that this is just the begining and many more will be on the way. One last thought as much as we think it is spectrum is not an unlimited resource especially with other things competiting with it like TV, Radio as well as all the new devices coming out. Until they figure out away to accomidate it all it's going to get messy.

The CDMA netnworks are way better insulated to handle the iphone and NO GSM carrier's 3G is bigger than ANY CDMA carrier's.

My question is if I upgrade my plan and I have one of the 3g multimedia phones will I have to pay for the data or is this for new customers?

These plans go effective the 18th. So this is for every customer who upgrades/get a new line of service from the 18th moving forward. So yes you will have to pay for data if you get one of those phones.
