Apple's App Store hits 1,000,000,000 downloads

In the 9 short months that Apple's App Store has been up and running, iPhone and iPod touch users have downloaded applications from the very useful to the very useless. Today, the guys from Cupertino celebrated the 1,000,000,000 app downloaded from the store. While sites selling applications were familiar to hard core BlackBerry and Windows Mobile users, Apple made the App Store more user friendly and the touchscreen iPhone and iPod touch fell out to be perfect devices for downloading games and novelty applications like iBeer and numerous fart machines. Some games, like Super Monkey Ball, take advantage of the devices' accelerometer to make the game more challenging.

With the success of the App Store, we have seen other cellphone manufacturers and carriers offer similar central online locations allowing phone users to find free and paid apps. RIM recently debuted the App World for their BlackBerry devices, Android owners can go to the Android Market and even Microsoft is to offer Marketplace application center for Windows Mobile users. Any of these stores will be hard-pressed to deliver the same number of downloads as Apple has done over such a short life span.

I don't like how the fart application is always mentioned. When people see that they just think that's what the app store is about.

The fart application is well...just immature and childish. Well I guess only when you use it in meetings...wait, what?

More people prefer the taste of apples over the taste of berries. But that really has nothing to do with anything.

I dont like thinking about how much frikin money Apple corp is getting from downloads. $0.99/download is a rediculous price to me, and Apple just raked in 1 billion dollars in app downloads in less than a year. Apple is crooked.

they didnt make 1 billion dollars... they have to pay the developers who make the apps... but apple still comes out making a pretty hefty amount of pocket change...

But they probably make almost a billion because although they pay the developers, the apps are free or .99 cents and higher. I'm guessing the average price of applications is about 3.99 with applications some higher and some lower

Kinda makes me wonder if the iphone buyers didn't get the shaft again. Seems to be apples MO though, less functionality at a higher price. Way to screw the sheeples again apple, good job!

Ever hear of consumerism? (and a 30 day return policy?) If people felt like they were getting screwed, then they would not purchase apps, or an iPhone or whatever. If they were useless, people would not purchase them. Get a life, along with the the Vitamins dude. Serious.

Man, Mcdonalds is sure screwing everyone because they have sold BILLIONS and BILLIONS of Hamburgers.

Addendum: By referring to a 30 day return policy, I was inferring you knew that I was referencing the purchase of an iPhone, and not an app.

Cheers!

And anyone who eats that much McDonald's deserves to die! I've done my research into the iphone and you know what, after I dismissed the salesman's "lifestyle" line, and got a real look at one, I took my smartphone out and patted myself on the back for having the brains NOT to buy into the bull....

im not the biggest fan of the Iphone but im sure that a lot of the apps that were downloaded were free. And for the ones that were not free you cant be mad at apple for people buying thier product. ( If you don't like that Apple is making money, DONT BUY THIER PRODUCTS )

Yeah a lot if them were free most likely. But some were bought at about .99 to $9.99 and only a few were bought at high prices like 14.99 to 19.99. So I guess it balances out a little to maybe about 99 cents to $1.99 per person.
