Considering the possible news of Verizon locking down app stores from phone manufacturers I'd say it's going to be impossible to get an iPhone on Verizon. With the huge success of the app store I see no way Apple would launch an iPhone on Verizon IF the rumors are true they are locking down app stores. Of course, this isn't verified yet, but we all know how rumors tend to go...

They would not lock down that app store. Verizon would probably get a cut, maybe 5 or 10 percent of every app. Right now Apple gets 30% of every app sold, I would bet that the developers would jump at the chance to give up a percentage of profits to have an potentiol 80 million cutomer base jump.

ATT is right up there with 77 million customers, so not much of a difference.

Verizon does not lock down app stores on smartphones just look at blackberry appworld, items must be purchased with paypal and I doubt verizon gets a cut of that

Verizon won't be locking down the app store on the iPhone IF they get it. I've heard many things of VZW locking down app stores, but if you look on the BB Storm under their third party apps download section, the BB App store is ready for install the moment you power on the Storm. VZW has become more and more lenient when it comes to some of their locking down aspects. The bluetooth for one has become less and less locked down as the company progresses.

Bottom line, the app store isn't going to be a roadblock for VZW.

Rumored VZW iPhone FTW.

i dont think so because the iphone is losing all of its hype. not too many people care about it anymore but new people that have the cheap companys and never had a good phone.

And that's why VZW has nearly 90 million and T-Mobile has circa 30-35 million? And Sprint...they're the one's starting the price war and they're STILL losing hundreds of thousands customers every financial quarter. With BB's and smartphones on the rise too, I don't see anything back up that claim. Just b/c the economy isn't doing so hot doesn't mean the cheap phones and carriers win. Some are being frugal, however we're seeing more and more rises in the smartphone industry, and we have the most expensive carrier on top.

VZW has 80 million, not sure where you got the 90 mil number but they were at 70 mil before buying Alltel and added 10 mil when they purchased Alltel for a total of 80 mil.

each carrier should adapt the phone to their specific unique plans and price points!

I mean, this is predictable, and I won't care one bit, because less kids on our network, the better our network runs, so us ATT customers will benefit. I know it won't be a huge improvement, but an improvement none the less. Plus, I'm sick of kids associating them iPhone trendies with the average ATT customer..it does get annoying, because all ATT ppl aren't trendies, at least I'm not; I basically hate the iPhone, and can't wait for ATT to hurry up and get the Hero over to the States, which, imo, is leaps beyond the iPhone. ATT has done me well, and VZW has badass coverage, so we both win in the end.

Like this is predictable because kids love iPhone and what the kids want the kids get. Like if I had kids then I would get them an iPhone, but I'm not a kid and there is no way I would get an iPhone because im like not trendy like the kids. Did I mention Trick love the kids? Trix are for kids?

Aside from the carrier impacts... I have a feeling this is been apples business strategy all along, they flooded the US market with the cheaper and easier to make GSM verisions, and now that ATT customers are saturated they move onto the next major client base; Verizon. Since there are so many Verizon customers and all of them are chomping at the bit to get an Iphone but have the sense not to switch carriers just for the phone Apple will sell millions more phones. I think if Verizon gets the Iphone it could potentially be almost as big as when it was first launched for ATT (but not quite as big)

Everyone seems to forget that Apple offered the iphone to VZW first, and because they could not provide support in house turned them down, so I wonder how that will change? PLus they could not get it insured. VZW would have had a lot of really unhappy customers calling for support or going into a store, and not able to get it. I disagree with other comments saying that if Verizon does get the iphone it will big but not as big as when it launched with AT&T. It will be bigger. All those loyal customers who didnt jump ship for the iphone will I'm sure be happy they waited.

What makes you think their is so many loyal VZ customers? Do you really think VZ would sell over 270,000 in just two days if they get the Iphone?

I Seriously doubt that!

With the right advertising, and tease absloutely yes they would, remember there are a lot of VZW customers out here that would have gotten the iphone if it had been released by Verizon.

Questions let's assume that the iPhone does make it to VZW, will it be exclusive and Apple abandon all the GSM customers? Assuming they don't (I don't think they would abandon GSM customers, though could be wrong) what kind of impact will it have on the phone? Currently the BBs have a CDMA/GSM and EVDO chipset in them which is great for USA use and overseas calls, but overseas data is way slow (GPRS). So will Apple have CDMA/EVDO and GSM/3G chips in them (does anyone know if any handset currently support all these combined frequencies?) If they do how will it effect the device (dimensions and performance)?

Or do the people on this forum believe that Apple will abandon it's GSM/3G users in the USA?

Is it easier, and maybe cheaper in the long run for Apple to just create a new device specifically for CDMA?

Would it be? They would need to create two devices 1 for overseas, 1 for Verizon, though how would it work with a user for example me, who would want the data speeds in the USA and overseas? The Storm has CDMA/EVDO for USA (talk/fast data) but for overseas only has GSM (no 3G) so the data speed is based on GPRS.

Would Apple alienate the GSM community in the USA?

Who cares apple makes the profit out of it all...... they need to just have a prepaid iphone. AT&T still has a year or so under contract with the iphone and honestly by the time that happens these up coming phone would probably takes it place. Honestly it would work out for me b/c i'm a iphone app designer :)
