advertisment:
Acer has announced its first smartphone outside of the Windows Mobile realm. Not only is the intriguingly called Acer Liquid the company’s first product running on Google’s Android 1.6 platform, but it is also the first official Android handset to be taking advantage of Qualcomm’s industry-leading 1GHz Snapdragon chipset. There will be more hardware goodies, including a WVGA capacitive touchscreen and a 5MP camera with autofocus and geo-tagging.

Software-wise, Acer promises a new enhanced interface that should provide quick access to “entertainment and web bookmarks”… whatever that means. A little something should be there for social network users too, as the phonebook is said to be integrated with Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Picasa and Flickr, which will automatically provide updated information. A brand new app, called Spinlets, will allow for free streaming of music and video that will also be available for sharing with your friends.

All of this sounds sweet, so we are already pretty enthusiastic about that Snapdragon-powered Android offering. Unfortunately, the manufacturer has not provided images of the device (nor has it provided info on release dates), but claims that it will sport ellipse curves, slim body and will be offered in red, white and black colors.

*Update*: Electricpig has managed to take a few snapshots of the device, so here it is - Acer's slim and sleek Android phone.

Is this thing actually going to hit the states? It'd be nice if for once we could just get something unbranded... but knowing carriers as I do, let us all join hands and hope as one that it lands at AT&T.

Thank you, I mean they have the worst coverage. Crappy 3G and they are the most expensive. The only reason to ever be with them is because for real the iphone is pretty cool.

I know you guys keep saying AT&T has bad coverage, but I have never had a bad signal wherever I have been. Sandiego, NY, Jersey, Ohio, And my home in Mi. Nothing but good. I do however agree their plans are thru the roof. I never use any minutes, have 2200 roll over minutes but I am forced to pay $80 for a family plan with 4 lines. My wife and I talk to each other most and my parents never talk except on camping trips and it's usually to me (mobile to mobile). I'm only with AT&T 'cause I work for them. If the Leo and the Android Dragon are coming to T.Mo then I think I'm jumping ship. I wish there was a $39 Data Plan and a 200 anytime minute add on for like $9.99 That would be perfect.

I used to pay $39 - employee discount for a 3 line family plan that was grandfathered. But when I tried to add my parents to the third line and get a separate line for myself (give them one of the 2 existing, add the other parent on a third line and get a separate plan with data for myself), they wouldn't go for it. They made me drop that cheap plan and get the $80 waste every minute plan. every bill I see no anytime minutes used, 100 Mobile to mobile and 2200+ roll over minutes even though 250 roll over minutes expired. I get sick of it.
