AT&T to cut 12,000 jobs

advertisment:
AT&T has decided to cut 12,000 jobs because of the slowing economy. The lay offs will start to take place from 2008 and roll into 2009.

The No.1 phone company has stated that the 4% lay off of its workforce is also due to in part of 'a changing business mix and a more structural organizational structure'. With a decline in land line sales due to cheaper VOIP plans and customers switching from landlines to wireless services, AT&T's profit margin has also been hit by the subsidies given to users for the iPhones.

Ironically, the good news is that with the wireless industry growing, AT&T is hiring in the wireless sector.

The company is said to pay off $600 million in severance pay.

The No.1 for how long a week or two? VZW's merg with Alltel is at the end of the month.

I don't like at&t, but even for them that sucks for the employees, I think I would be stressed if I had read this and worked for them wondering if it would be me. If they're number 1, why would they really need to let people go if they supposedly make so much.

a week or two? VZw has to divest 105 markets........ that is gonna take a lil longer than a week or 3 not to mention they have to give all the altell subscribers to option out. If you think altell subscribers will stay on you might be kidding yourself considering the major hike they are going to have to committ too...... Dont be gay all of your life

You're naive to think that divesting markets will keep customers around. I've worked around similar situations in the wireless industry and one company telling customers, "sorry we can't offer you service anymore under this name... yada yada yada" generally doesn't make a customer too happy.

#3 don't be stupid all your life. It's called being grandfathered in. They will keep the same plans until they decide they WANT to change them. Verizon isn't going to make them change their plans, it would be stupid to. They will keep most of the customers, it's just how it will work. So please don't be stupid and ignorant all your life.

we have to DIVEST 13 more markets, whixh is almost complete. Yes a week or two is a very accurate statement, we have already rolled out the welcome guides and transistional paperwork for alltel customers .

I wanted to throw my hat into the mix and just state this. When Alltell Is dissolved into VZW, VZW will offer alltell custs to either keep their plans the way they are(for as long as they want, contract end date and beyond) or change to a VZW plan. Vzw has done the same with Qwest, Unicell, and others and will do the same with alltell customers. So my point is I only wish that people would think/research before they speak.

They did not do that when they acquired SureWest earlier this year... I wish that people would think/research before they speak...
They lost a good amount of SureWest customers (as did they keep a good amount as well) due to the fact that they had shut off some people's service at the end of some set time given them by VZW. Many customers were not able to keep their plans and were given a set time to change. To be honest, I am not sure what you are thinking or where you are researching before you make some obscene claim like that.

Verizon will not lose a crap-load of Alltell customers when the merge is completed. They will lose some, but not any number like half. To think Verizon will simply "let" all their newly acquired customers keep their exist plan AND features is asinine. Good luck.

To you, take your own advice, do a little bit of your own homework, and quit being such a little VZW Fanboy Bitch.

#35. We retained 88% of SureWest customers when the aquisition took place, and those who were grandfathered in are still on thos plans.

your full of shit GaYt&t cock rider.

Many SureWest customers received letters informing them that they could not keep their unlimited text features, some of their plans and so forth, bitch. I personally helped customers who received those letters AND customer who has their service completely shut off. Serious Dick Face, take the balls that Verizon has resting on your chin, and get a life.

leave it to vzw fanboys to comment on something that has nothing to do with their company... this article is about at&t employees losing their jobs... and you fanboys come on here and start going to bat for vzw... its filth like you that make this site more horrid by the day... i dont have a problem with you guys on vzw articles, but for the sake of god, leave the comments for something based on the article... and yes, vzw will be the number 1 provider (in terms of subscribers)... but not yet... at the time of this article being written, at&t is number 1.... so leave it alone...

"Ironically, the good news is that with the wireless industry growing, AT&T is hiring in the wireless sector."

So all you vzw idiots are making it look like at&ts going under, when theyre hiring because of good business. typical vzw morons. yelling at the top of their lungs why their employer is number1. some people love the evil empire, most dont. whatever you rednecks like, thats fine. just dont forget to go to your evangelical church and praise verizon.

#19 seriously you have a problem. You just can't help to hate that verizon is taking over the wireless communication. I would be concern that at&t are laying people off and who knows how bad this could end. The only good thing at&t has going for them is the iphone, "but" soon we will have an iphone of our own. Could you imagine that? The iphone on the biggest, best reliable network... It's actually kind of scary to think that at&t might actually loose it all!!!

Wow straight from a commercial... first off if you look at the Markets for cell phone companies. It is no longer a battle for who has the most subscribers. AT&T focuses on people ages 15-30 focusing mostly on indiviual plans. Verizon focuses on ages 15-40 with attention directed toward families. Sprint focuses on ages 20-55 with attention directed towards buisness.

All three are the best at there catagories and only offer a mix of plans beacause it would be bad buisness not to.

So yes

AT&T is #1 if you like gsm and want an iPhone

VZW is number one for calling area and high bills

Sprint is number one for buisness phones and wireless broadband*

If you want to argue about the wireless broadband do some research of your own dont just take what a commercial says.

stop beating a dead horse... vzw has great coverage for farmers and trailer parks... but for cities, all carriers have good coverage... what good is a smartphone if its crippled? what good is coverage if you cant pay for it?

This is for employees working in the landline division. The wireless division isn't getting any jobs cut.
Maybe you morons should learn to read before you post an article.

Well, since the wireless sector is hiring, can't the people who lose their jobs in the landline area be rehired again in the wireless sector? Also, what's with these VZW fanboys? I mean, there's no guarantee that Alltel customers will stay with Verizon. Because, if they wanted to be with Verizon, I'm sure they've would've chosen Verizon instead of Alltel.

haha lol..i dont have a storm i have the gay voyager, and i could "break my thumbs" easier on the voyager's keyboard than the storms. the storms keyboard is not that bad and its not suppose to replace a laptop, ppl shouldnt be trying to write 10 page reports on the storm. thanks anonymous for the new "rock hard for vzw" phrase. why dont you idiots use real user names instead of anonyumous, like bob, john, me, at&t fanboy?

I just think it's funny that people are justifying the job cuts because this is an iPhonearena.com/At&t website and the job cuts are ONLY happening with its landline services. People are so naive. Job cuts with any company are still job cuts. Which means that the company either may not be doing well or that company is not doing as well as they anticipated. One thing that I can gaurantee is that Verizon/Verizon Wireless has better job security than ANY other carrier IN THE WORLD! Yeah, I said it. The reason? VALUE. Verizon Wireless knows that although they are not the cheapest carrier, they have the MOST RELIABLE CONSISTENT SERVICE in the country. If you have $50, and you need cell service, would you buy an iPhone with MEDIOCRE service? Or would you buy an LG VX8300 with the BEST service? I would hope you choose the latter!! GO VZW!!

i would choose the iphone...and by the way...att already posted their profits and are by no means hurting. Like others already stated on this post, their wireless sector is GROWING. I know alot of people such as myself who do not need landlines and just rely on their cell. Same thing goes for payphones...dont see as much of them now do ya? So shut up and know what u r talking about fanboy.

Again, naive...It doesn't matter if a PART of your company is doing well. Any carrier, including Sprint, can probably say that there is a PART of the company is doing well. Get your mind right and take the iPhone with its service. Eventually, like At&t, the iPhone will be obsolete. "TFLEX"? Grow up and move out of your parents apartment before you have the nerve to tell someone to shut up. I empathize for the people that were affected by the job cut. Unfortunately, everything is still on the upside since its just landline jobs and not wireless. Some At&t customers are so clueless. If you worked for At&t landline services, you too would be pissed off. Don't separate landline from wireless unless they are truly two seperate companies. For instance, Verizon Wireless and Verizon Communications. Only then can you really say that your wireless side was not affected! GO VZW!!!

haha lol funny...the vx8300 is a great phone but sometimes the music plays just out of no where! i must push the buttons in my pocket some how. and whenever at&t is brought up it corelates with the iphone...how come i never hear of any other at&t phones!? look at the env2 , it is a stlyish, durable and great texting phone. and the title of this article is misleading then. usually when people say at&t you think of the mobile company. if at&t didnt have the iphone, they would not be as popular as they are now, i dont think.

i dis-agree, att has always come out w/ great phones.. the bold for instance fastest blackberry out right now.. also the razor although not the greatest phone came out first on att.. i think all the co's have some type of contract think about it... why would thye all have coverage i ndiff areas? and conventiently in the same spots some have service others dont? all in all they are prob all connected so it doens't really matter does it? they are all the same in one way or another, in my opinion they should just all share towers and then everyone would have perfect service..
