AT&T prepares its network for a new iPhone?

advertisment:
Here’s a fact – about a half of the data traffic AT&T manages comes from the iPhone users. Aside from this, according to an unofficial source, the carrier is about to introduce the next model of the series this summer. Another rumor supposes that if this actually happens, AT&T will have to handle about 10 times more data traffic than it currently does. Because of this, AppleInsider is quick to remind that AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega has said the company has the potential to upgrade its 3G mobile data network significantly: “we have the infrastructure capability to go to 7.2 [Mbit/s], and we'll have the capability to go 14.4 and 20 in the next couple of years, so I think there's coverage we're going to improve, there's quality we're going to improve, and there's speed that's also going to get improved” says the CEO. Well, having in mind those unofficial predictions, this better be true.

ATT preparing for the launch of a new phone that will be so popular they won't be able to support it without more towers FTW.

ATT releasing worthwhile phones FTW.

Also, whens the last time you heard about Verizon getting a phone that was so popular that it overloaded its towers?

Yeah I know.

do you understand how impossible this concept is to fathom? From a productivity aspect this is counter productive and will set ATT back years in the race to be the best 4g network out there....to state they can deliver 7 mps on the current and signals is proposterous and laughable....they cant even deliver 3g speeds to over 60% of America and now they are proclaiming that they can rebuild and offer more in a few months?

FACT..... ATT can NOT restructure their current set up to deliver 7 mps on an average due to lack of bandwidth and the old technology they use to deliver their current 3g services.

FACT....if they were to invest in this, rebuild their towers and deliver something like this, they would be putting their 4g network to the side then and would be giving the clearest of advantages to Sprint and VZW since both netoworks are both currently building and testing their 4g or LTE technology as we speak.

All this for a revamped I Phone? A handset they dont even own and subsidize every time they sell one???

I look forward to this, clearly this is a desperate attempt to salvage a great product that is on a n inferior network... once this fails miserably , Apple will look just as backwards as ATT does right now.

You must not understand the concept of business and making money.
ATT is hearing the crys of users and fixing the problem, and making service nationwide even better...and at the same time preserving the service once the next Iphone comes out.

You don't see this since you have your head shoved so for up Verizons ass that you can see what they ate last night.

You are either the biggest idiot that has ever posted on this site or the worlds most elaborate troll.

Sweet, improvements are always good...

other than that, all I'm seeing on this message board is a couple of kids sucking on gigantic carrier cocks. Its pittyful how bad some of you guys are up the asses of these companies..

Honestly, the Storm and the Iphone are both good and bad in their own ways. The people with their heads up Verizion/ATT's asses are freaking mindboggling.

If the carriers were so bad they wouldn't be in business.

PERIOD.

my language might have been a bit harsh, but its crazy how easy any post can turn into a war between VzW and AT&T, knowing that seeing how they're both on different networks, its like arguing how grilled chicken is so much better than baked chicken, even though they both taste good. The Iphone and bb Storm are good phones, but hopefully this ends it.. if there wasn't an Iphone, there likely wouldn't be a Storm, this argument would probably be between the VU and the Instinct or something..

..i dunno, seeing how LG had the Prada, and the VU looks almost exactly like the Prada, I think there would have been a VU... but maybe you're right..

att data network is and always will be a joke and the is the biggest downfall of any iphone it will always suck because it doesnt have a network to perform on

If it always was and always will be the joke all you Verizon fanboys keep saying then why has it been around for so long?
Seriously if it were as shitty as you guys state it is then why doesn't everyone go to Verizion...who we all know is best friends with Jesus himself and is the best thing to ever happen to cell phones since the invention of...THE BB STORM.

i dont want everyone to go to verizon. if that happened there would be a monopoly and verizon would raise their rates like crazy. i just want to know why there are more verizon people (it seems) speaking out on this website, than at&t or sprint.

because there are more VzW fanboys, and like fanboys, they troll message boards and phone sites touting how their network is sooooo much better than any other garbage that comes around; its like Yankee fans, they make up at least 50% of MLB message board users.. just because the Yanks have a serious fanboy problem..

And people are haters too. Explain why there's so many non-AT&T users on this message board when the article is all about iPhone and AT&T. People see the word iPhone and come in the thread just to complain. I'm 95% sure that iPhone articles get the most internet hits on average and Im sure a large percentage of these hits come from people who don't have the iPhone.

ATT: Sub Par Network + expired labor contracts + talks of raising healthcare, retirement costs, and decreasing employment security. Sounds like a company that 1. I wouldnt want a data device on 2. I certainly wouldnt want to work for. ATT FTL
And what is all of this infrastructure talk? Sounds a bit long winded to me. . .

All these comments, Verizon people need to stay on their forum and stop annoying ATT people and vice versa. look the facts are even Verizon realizes that they need to move to a more international platform (Since 1 parent Vodafone, forced it down their throats) and are moving to LTE to compete with such providers as ATT and T-Mobile. Now you may complain but in my area VZW sucks, you can't even get coverage and when you do, it says full strength, but you get drop calls all the time. The thing is neither network is good for everyone all the time, move on. I'm more interested in understand the features of the new iPhone. Reasons why I left Verizon, 1. No service, or extremely poor service in my area, 2. Horrible customer service, those reps think because they get rated the best that they don't need to deal with customers and 3. No iPhone say what you want, the storm is no where near the iPhone, Samsung, HTC, and LG are closer to making an iPhone beater then RIM and 4. Hate my bluetooth being locked up 4 the love of GOD, leave the phones alone (same problem on the iPhone but that's an Apple issue not ATT).

Miacol, all good points! Seriously I like your points of view and the way you state certain things to be true in your area, and your opinion! Good show! Also just an FYI Vodafone isnt VZW's Parent Company, if anything Verizon Comm would be. VZW is a joint "venture" between the two stock holders (VZcomm55%, and Vodafone45%). Parent company is just too suggestive and improperly used in this case I think...

wow..... you are all sad and pathetic.... I will let you all in on a little secret... Apple didn't reinvent the smartphone, Blackberry didn't reinvent the smartphone, and HTC (the only company I will buy smartphones from) didn't reinvent the smartphone. Wanna know who did?

MOTOROLA (LOL.... seriously, it hurts my fingers to write it and my eyes to read it, but they did.)

All smartphones (windows, palm, and Blackberry) were the biggest, bulkiest pieces of garbage at least 1 inch think and weighing so much they pulled your pants down. I know I had an i730 for 2 years. Motorola decided to make a fashionable smartphone, that was thin and practicle for non geeky type people to use and still be productive. This radical idea of a smartphone for everyone was a spectacular innovation that shocked the smartphone industry, subsequently blackberry released the pearl for T-Mobile, which sparked the curve (blackberries number one selling phone), which sparked HTC to make the Touch, Apple to make the iPhone, HTC to make the Touch diamond, samsung to make omnia/HD............. and so on.

All of you need to shut up! Innovation sparks more innovation, we need blackberry and apple and windows and android to fight no holds bar style.....

"But kiltlifter... why is that?"

I will tell you boys and girls..... BECAUSE WE AS THE CONSUMERS WIN!!!!!!!!!!

So stop arguing and whining and crying like little boys and girls in a kindergarten classroom, sit back, relax, and let the phone manufacturers, and phone service providers duke it out. The more they fight, the more we win.

Actually IBM created the first smartphone in 1982, but Nokia made the first present generation smartphones in 2001 and Handspring made them popular.
