ACCESS and PalmSource introduce a new Platform for Linux-based cellphones

Access Co., Ltd. and its fully owned subsidiary PalmSource, Inc., acquired last year unveiled the latest evolution of Palm OS for Linux-based smartphones and mobile devices - ACCESS Linux Platform (ALP). The new platform, which takes advantage of both Access's and PalmSource's expertise, runs Linux kernel version 2.6.12 or above and includes GIMP ToolKit (GTK+) open source libraries for the creation of graphical user interfaces, GStreamer - an open source, modular and multi-threaded streaming media framework and the high-performance database engine SQLite. ALP also features the Access's new application framework – MAX, which provides easy-to-use interface and enables operation of multiple applications and tasks. The ALP's user interface is different from that of the Palm OS, although PalmSource was was in charge of the applications in MAX. The platform is planned to be released for manufacturers by the end of 2006, so the ALP-based handsets may be expected some time next year.
