nec 525 2nd screen

the 2nd lcd on my nec 525 does not show anything while it's idle. If a call is coming through or the camera is on while the phone is closed, it shows on the screen, but when the phone is closed and idle nothing apperars! I have all the correct settings in place for the "sunflower" wallpaper to show but it doesn't. Is this a problem with the phone or am I just setting it up incorrectly?
