Can you do this through the menus of the phone ?

I guess you would be able to do this if you connect the phone to a computer via CABLE ... but this could damage your phone.

i found out how, here goes

Deleting a ringtone or image:

Step 1 Press the "Menu" key on your phone
Step 2 Press 5 to select the "Media Gallery" Menu
Step 3 Press 2 for "Pictures" or press 3 for "Sounds"
Step 4 Highlight the desire ringtones or wallpaper and press menu
Step 5 Select "Delete" and press ok
Step 6 Confirm deletion by selecting "yes"
