Hey. I just picked up this phone today switching from Sprint.

The fact that it could play MP3's totally blew me away and was unexpected. I've done more research on the Bluetooth bits, but from what I've figured out...

You have to get a memory card called a Transflash (I believe). It's one of the 50 or so different memory stick brands out there. Very tiny and the most storage made right now is 128mb.

I guess the other side of the equation is to get a Transflash card reader for your PC and just drag the files to the removable drive in Windows. I suppose one is made that connects to USB, but I haven't checked yet. I have an Olympus camera that uses larger SmartMedia cards (yay, another format). I hope I can find one that does both the Transflash and SmartMedia. Although I bet I'll be taking up two USB ports with readers.

Is this the way to do it, or is there another approach? I've only owned this thing 5 hours and didn't expect to use it as an MP3 player, but now I'm digging the idea.

Card Readers

There are lots of 7 in 1 or "21 in 1" cardreader. They read SD/MMC, Memory Sticks (that Sony Uses), CF (Type I/II), xD, SmartMedia, etc. Then you have all you need in one.
Transflash is something like Reduced Size MMC. T-Flash (Transflash) is compatible with SD through adaptor (to get in the size of SD) so you won't worry about the card reader. You can get one for $10-$20 as far as I know.

T-Flash cards are up to 512MB now and they are sold with adaptor, so you won't worry how to put it in the card reader.

if any of you get that working, post it... From what I understand, on the latter V710's, you can't transfer files from the card to the phone. but you can use the files on the card. In other words, if you want to pull pictures off the phone, you can't do it with the card... But, maybe I'm wrong.

The e815 from the factory cannot transfer files from the card to the phone. There are seem hacks to the phone, but by doing this you void your warranty and could possibly ruin your phone. You are not able to transfer file via bluetooth onto the TransFlash card either. Verizon has disabled the OBEX profile on the bluetooth and allows only connectection with a headset. Again, you are able to hack the bluetooth in order to get it to work, but this is not recommended or encouraged. For now the only way to get files to your card is using the data cable or using the SD adapter (I recommend this). If you want to get the music onto your phone, email it to yourself at 5551235555(your phone #)@vzwpix.com.

I attempted to send the mp3's the way you suggested, and I'm stumped, it gives me a little orage/red alert signal in the upper left corner of the screen and it won't actually download the mp3. It tells me to download it later.

How large is the .mp3? I think they may have a limited size. I have not personally checked what that is. Again, your best bet is to just purchase a TransFlash card. Trust me.

I'd rather unlock the phone... I don't care about listening to mp3's, but I'd like one or two to use as ring tones, and none of the ones I want can be found on any website... It's pretty much up to me to get the ringtones I want on there.

Can you play MP3's as ringtones on either the Moto E815 or the LG 8100?

play mp3's as ring tones

there is a way to play mp3's on your phone if you own a T'flash reader...no need to hack your phone or use the inconvenient usb cable...no need to covert & re-convert files over and over like the old method and you can also transfer the complete sond with out cutting it short...
cable free easy to use in your palm method of playing your favorite songs as ringtones...
I've owned my e815 for some time now and everyone loves how great it sounds, perfect and clear....non-cheesy like most downloads.guaranteed to work on your E815

I have had success with emailing the mp3 to my phone where I can Store Only or (maybe) Store as Ringtone. The form of my email address is xxxxxxxxxx@vzwpix.com, where the x's are my phone number.

Thumbs up Ringtones for e815

TO make ringtones (short of what you already know) It has to be no larger than a 30 second clip and change the file extension to .mid from .mp3. Send to phone then you are able to save the file as a ringtone. So the jist to it is change the file extension to make it a midi file and it will work always.
