So, how's the E815?

Someone who visits here must by now have used a E815. Opinion?

I've had this phone for about 6 hours and I like it. It's easy to insert contact numbers. The outside screen is small but has all essential info ("just the facts, ma'am") at a glance. The inside screen is big, bright and uncluttered. Pictures so far have been pretty good. Haven't experimented with it much yet though.

The phone is clear and has a lot of options for individual tastes re: ringtones, etc. You can also download pics and songs if there's not enough for you.

Thanks for the info. I had awaited the release of the E815 as an excited kid, but was pursuaded by two Verizon reps and a Verizon store owner, that the LG VX8100 is a better phone (to be released on July 11). They say that the 8100's memory card is easy to access, that the outside screen image is programmable unlike the E815's, that there's more memory, that the MP3 controls are better, etc. Comments, as far as you know?

Small Piece of advice - don't listen to anything a Verizon Salesman tells you. Read lots of forums and opinions like on this site and soon you'll know WAY more than any of those guys! I've been researching hardcore for about 2 weeks wavering between the same 2 phones - Motorola E815 or LG VX8100 - From what I've gathered so far it seems that they would be pretty equal (one excelling at some things, the other excelling at others) EXCEPT it seems that the vx8100 seems to have more initial bugs and issues from reviews i've read so I'm leaning towards the e815, though I wish I didn't need a new phone for another couple of months because I think if I were confident the bugs had been worked out of the vx8100 and the software fixed and upgraded I'd lean that way! It's never an easy choice and it seems no phone has all the things it should! You would think the cell phone makers would read these forums and make the perfect phone, but I guess they're too busy counting their dollars for that! :-)

Actually, I tend to lean toward the E815 over the 8100. the 8100 is a little more user friendly, but it doesn't have as many features. The one thing I don't like about the Moto is that the contact list is made up of individual numbers. You can't store 6 numbers under one person. so you have in the list, Matt home, Matt work, Matt Cell instead of just having Matt, and a default and 2 other numbers.

I haven't had anyone complain about either one, although I had one person bring the 8100 in where the picture he had just taken, along with a couple videos would not allow me to erase them, and the phone locked up on me twice. I don't know if that is an issue at all, it might have been just a unique problem. Over all the phones are almost identical. I would recommend www.phonescoop.com to do a comparison of the phones. I thought long and hard about wich phone I wanted to get, or even if I wanted to just go with the older v710.

I'm happy with the E815. I like the browsing better, and I like the look and feel of it a little better. but it's really a matter of personal preference, the two are virtually identical. Besides, they are both the same price, from our suppliers anyway, so it's really the salesman trying to show you excitement for one phone over the other... maybe because he had too many of the 8100's in stock or something. hehe

Oh... and thanks for the vote of confidence. I like people to make uninformed decisions.

I just bought it, and upgraded from it's prior generation phone. The prior one locked up, keyboard kept sticking, mute kept going on, replaced the phone three times prior to saying....ENOUGH is ENOUGH. Is this the same Motorola who made the TANK>>>>>>>Star Tac?

Well I waivered between the LGVX8100 and getting the E815. I actually bought my daughter the 8100, as she is an LG fan. She is very happy with it. However, I did buy the 815 for myself, in that I think Motorola has introduced this one quickly to "subtly apologize" for the lousy workmanship on it's prior release. The software doesn't freeze yet, I still need to buy the extended battery.

Oh, yeah about the battery, shame on Motorola by putting this lousy battery in the phone. It doesn't hold for any length of time that is reasonable. However since we aren't going to change them, I suggest the longer life battery. It gives significantly longer talk/standbye time. Also get the charger for USB laptop, in that this allows the phone to hold a charge continually, as well as the car charger. Between all of these, you should have a great phone with regards to battery life.

Other than this, seems like this phone should last me a long time, and so should my daughters LG VX8100. They better last at the prices being charged :-)

Good luck to all, and if we spent as much time trying to cure world hunger and peace, we probably would have achieved it by now.

This used to bug me about the Motorola phones (been a user since the StarTac), but they fixed it the way it should be in the E815.

Here is what you have to do.

Go into Contacts
Hit your Menu button to bring up options
Hit the up arrow and click on "Setup" in the contacts menu
Change "View" from "All Contacts" to "Primary Contacts"

Then if you have all your contacts named "Joe Lastname" it will roll them up all into one listing. The default phone number is the one you setup as "Primary".

If you hit "View" on any contact name, you can then scroll through that name only with their different contact information. Also, to change the default number, when viewing the contact, click the menu button again and click "Set primary" and it will show all the different contact/phone numbers for that name. Once you select the primary, it is the default when hitting dial from the contacts menu.

Did I confuse you yet? Once you go through the menu's it will make sense. I finally like what they did. Much cleaner contact book.

Now about the 815 battery. You'll see a growing thread on this on HoFo...The gist seems, and I'm one who can attest to this...that the fault appears to be for those of us in fringe metro areas where EVDO/1x networks are constantly shifting back and forth. I reckon the battery would be adequate IF your phone didn't have to hunt for the network as per above.

Shame on Moto AND Verizon for not field testing this new broadband issue and sorting it out and at the very least making disabling the EVDO capablity easier than having to hack the phone in the test mode. Tsk Tsk.

FWIW, VZW is ...after MUCH wrangling...sending me an extended battery. You all in those fringe areas should insist on nothing less.

Very true. I live in the Bay Area where EV-DO has not be released entirely. My phone use to switch between the 1x and EV-DO every few minutes. My phone would sometimes not even last for 15 hours! I then disabled it (EV-DO) and not get around 48 hours. BIG difference! The phone does have some issues, but the good by far outweighs the bad. I love this phone! You can watch a movie (with a 256 tf card you can fit around 3 full movies), listen to .mp3's (purchase a pair of MoTo stereo headsets), take pictures (1.3 MP) and video (up to 3 minutes with the tf card), or play a video game (Need for Speed Underground is INCREDIBLE). That barely scratches the surface! I will not part with this phone until the Treo 670 comes out (yes it is a real phone).

BTW: If you need to know how to disable EV-DO, enable OBEX bluetooth transfer, or any general questions, just ask!
