Hey,
i see a lot of post from people trying to get unlocks. I work in cingular and i did work for the former at&t wireless before the merger. Sadly some of you are a little mistaken.
1st) Your sim card merely provides you with the service to make calls and also to store more memory than your phone(no ringtones, games, or graphics can be saved on it, only numbers and addresses). The sim card is merely a block added on to stop hackers compaired to the digital services(TDMA). An extra step that would take time to break. It has a loop in it just like other compaines that uses cards to get services in boxes or what not.
2) There is only a lock on your sim card if you put your sim code into to much incorrectly. A sim code is a code that when you turn off your phone and turn it back on will ask you for a code to put in before you can use the phone. Also called pin code by customers. The only code that is used to so called unlock you sim is called your "PUK or PUK 2" code that you can simply call into customer service and get..unless your service is cancelled.
3) MOST ANNOYING THING EVER.....I think its complete bull crap but this is how it works. Per your contracts that you sign it gives you a discount on the phone...with that discount it locks any phone that are meant for U.S. use..same thing over seas but backwards. This means that the phones are technically not completely yours becuase its like a loan(the contract for the phone). So when you call into the former at&t or cingular we fill out a form. The form is then sent to the manufacture and it is merely the manufactures decision then to give us the code or not. The messed up thing is that if you cancell service and want to get the unlock code...you can hardly get it through the company and the manufacture is ever harder to get it from. In customer service all we can do is process a request and thats if your account is not suspended or cancelled.
From what I have heard this is the same thing with other cell phone compaines as well. The lock is from the manufaction. the circle just goes round and round for help. i (my self) have spend hours on the phone with nokia and motorola trying to get unlock codes. Motorola was giving me the most help.
So, you must decided what code you want and go from there. If you do not believe what i am telling you feel free to call up customer service for the former at&t or cingular. the only other way i can think to get the code is look at websites like this until you might find on in the uk or somewhere.....lol....
hugs and kisses
