Nextel phones and sim cards??

I hope someone would be able to help me. What in the hell a sim card do in a NEXTEL phone?

As far as I know, there are some Nextel Models like i2000plus which support iDen and GSM - kind of dual band. The whole idea is to be able to take the phone if you go to Europe (where the networks are GSM 900 mhz).

Does this mean you can put a cingular sim card in the phone as well?

I've seen some pictures of GSM phones (those of Cingular for example) with Nextel SIM inside
