What the heck is BitPim?

Im reading all these threads on other forums about bitpim but im not 100 percent sure on what it exactly is. Alls i know is that some people beleive there is a slight risk of messing up you phone if you install it THATS IT, haha i know nothing else. Can someone please tell me what it is and what its all capable of, and if it is worth using. THANKS

http://www.bitpim.org/

"BitPim is a program that allows you to view and manipulate data on many CDMA phones from LG, Samsung, Sanyo and other manufacturers. This includes the PhoneBook, Calendar, WallPapers, RingTones (functionality varies by phone) and the Filesystem for most Qualcomm CDMA chipset based phones."

It is open source (free) and they have pictures of what the program can do. It is installed on your PC and then connects to your phone. Is there a risk of messing up your phone - probably, like there is risk that something might happen to my finders while I type this. The question is how big the risk is which I can not because I have not used it.

I have used bitpim for about 2 years. My wife and I have vx4400's 2 years ago when I started using it. Now my wife has a vx6100 and I have a vx8100. And bitpim continues to get better and better. I sync my vx8100 via bluetooth ( D-Link DBT 120). It all works great. I use the same bluetooth and cable connected syncs through bitpim on both Linux and Windows. I'd give it more that 2 thumbs up if I had more than 2 thumbs. I'd be happy to answer specific questions and concerns if you have any any.

Talking This is what a Bit Pim is...

Bit Pim is the software you use to transfer your phone book from one phone to the other using your lap top computer

LG vx8300

I just got this 8300 and the bitpim program. I can import data just fine, but I can't seem to get my ring tones exported onto my phone. Anyone have a suggestion? I am using a mac. Thanks!

Update

I just tinkered for another hour or so and figured it out. So if any of you mac users are having the same problem, email me and hopefully I'll check my inbox. chesterthecheetah@hotmail.com.

You can check the list of supported phones at the website before you download. They say that using "other phones" will work sometimes, but it didn't allow me to connect with my LG AX275. All of the options were grayed-out.

Check out http://www.howardforums.com/showthre...readid=1201431 for the AX 275 seems like you have to set it to file system mode.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but I have a PC and I got ringtones on my VX8300 perfectly through bluetooth.
