I don't believe the Chocolate is made in GSM (at least I'm not aware of it if it is). If it is GSM and unlocked you can use it on Cingular. Make sure it has at least the 850 and 1900 bands as that's what Cingular uses.

The chocolate has a GSM version. It is called KG800. >Here< (http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/LG-Chocolate-KG800-KG808-MG800C-phone-p_1490.html) is the info for it. :)

Oops :) Thanks for the info. I would avoid it because it's missing the 850 band. Depending where your at you might be able to get away with it but why take the chance...

I attempted to consolidate the number of electronic devices that I carry and purchased the HP IPaq HW6925. I was very disappointed to learn upon arrival that Cingular has disabled the GPS, unless I purchase the TeleNav service for $5.99 or $9.99 per month. Since I travel internationally and could not find map coverage information for TeleNav, I decided to purchase the GPS software seperately (~$40 and up depending upon maps and quality). It seems very unreasonable that Cingular is charging $5.99 per month for software that can be reasonably obtained for $40. Especially on a phone that can be purchased unlocked for $525 and Cingular is selling for $409.
Why don't you publish that the service fee is required to use the built-in GPS?
Obviously, I am very disappointed and am in the process of sending the phone back. The experience has left me very disappointed in Cingular as a whole.

The main difference between Telenav w/ Cingular and a stand alone GPS system is this:
Telenav w/ Cingular - You pay a monthly fee (and buy a seperate receiver) but you never have to worry about downloading updated maps, it's all updated for you. It's not locked into one phone either. If you switch SIM cards to another phone, you can use that one also (provided it's capable of the service).
Standalone GPS - You purchase the unit/maps and it's up to you to update the maps accordingly.
FYI: Telenav w/ Cingular only works in Cingular's service area. If you travel outside of the service area, you loose the GPS capability. If you lose signal, the GPS 'guesses' where your at by the speed/direction you were traveling when you lost it. When you pick up signal on your phone again, it'll re-adjust your location and calculate any changes that may be needed. Internationally you won't be able to use the serivce at all. (may work on laptops and blackberry internationally, but I'd have to check on it).
Sorry forgot to mention this... If you go to telenav's site, it suggests you will be able to use the service without a receiver. Here's the link.

My question wasn't very clear. I don't understand why Cingular disables the stand alone GPS capabilities on the HW6925, if you don't purchase the subscription to TeleNav. If I purchase the unlocked HW6945, the GPS will work with stand alone GPS Navigation software.
Since Cingular is disabling the stand alone GPS capabilities on this phone, it should be published that you will be required to purchase the subscription to TeleNav in order to use the GPS on the phone.
Every review I have read in regard to the HW6925 states you will have the option of using Microsoft Pocketstreets, HP's Navigation software, or TeleNav. However, that is not the case in regard to the HW6925. Cingular will disable the GPS, if you don't purchase the TeleNav option for a monthly fee of $5.99 or $9.99.
The website and box for the PDA states you will have these options, with no mention of the requirement for a subscription to TeleNav. It seems to me that the requirement for a subscription to TeleNav is a last minute change.
Thank you.

Advertising the HW6925 has built-in GPS and charging a fee to use it is equivalent to advertising the PDA has WiFi (802.11b) and requiring a data plan to use it. Personally, I don't need a data plan. I have WiFi at work, home, and a roaming plan through work (IPASS). I can get web access at any starbucks, airport, etc. I currently use my HX4700 at all these locations. I was hoping to get a single device to consolidate my cell phone, PDA, and GPS receiver. That is why I was willing to pay the $409.99 for the device.
By purchasing the PDA, I am purchasing the advertised hardware necessary for receiving GPS signals. Cingular is "locking" out the use of the GPS receiver. HP has assured me the unlocked HW6945 will work with 3rd party vendors for the Navigation software.
It is equivalent to advertising the phone has bluetooth communications, but disabling the file transfer function, so you have to purchase music downloads, ringtones, etc. from the carrier.
I would have preferred to know the GPS will be disabled up front, so I didn't waste my time with Cingular. Not one of the advertised websites for the HW6925 states a subscription to TeleNav will be required to use the built-in GPS (Cingular Premier, Microsoft, or HP). The HW6925 box states the phone comes with Microsoft Pocketstreets or other Navigation software may be purchased seperately. The box does not mention a subscription to TeleNav is required to use the built-in GPS.
Thank you.

Answer that one Cingular Dude! :) :)
I have checked the specs provided by Cingular and the phone DOES have GPS enabled. Do you subscribe to another GPS service? You don't get free GPS just because the phone enables it, or because you have a receiver. You DO NOT have to subscribe to telenav, but you do have to subscribe to something. No one is giving their GPS system access away for free.
It took a while for me to post a reply because I had to get my hands on a 6925. I tested it with two different GPS systems, one of which was telenav. Both of them worked fine.
The phone also has WiFi, which was disabled. Going through the settings (as was the case with the 8125 initially) enabled the WiFi and produced no connectivity issues. If your having problems I suggest you contact tech support.

Just purchased this phone (it has 850, 1800, 1900 MHz bands) unlocked and unbranded from Sony.
How do I set it up to work with Cingular (besides just inserting the SIM) in order to get the best reception and the MMS, e-mail and internet features?

Go to Sony's website and find the settings page. You can have the settings text messaged to your phone for free. All you have to do is select install (they may call it something else) and enjoy.

Why doesn't Cingular have camera flashes on any of their phones?
Some phones do have a flash. I can't name them off the top of my head, but it's not as many as it used to be.
I don't know why more models don't have them, but it's probably something to do with camera quality and space in the actual phone. Alot of cameras have the ability to shoot better in low light situations, but I do agree more models should have that feature.

Hello,
I have a question for the Cingular representative about porting my cell phone number over to Cingular. My contract with Nextel has expired but before I port my old number over I was wondering if it's possible to try Cingular out with a new number and then at the end of the month port my old cell phone number over. Is this possible to do? Thanks, Julia

Yes, you can activate a Cingular number and switch it out with your nextel number within 30 days. Any store should be able to handle this.

You can get it. Go to Nokia's website (I assume it's a Nokia since it's running Symbian). Click support, and find your phone model (make sure you select att wireless as your carrier). You can have the settings sent to your phone VIA a SMS message. When you get the message, click download and all should be good. If that doesnt work, try calling Tech Support through cust. service.
Good Luck!

"No one is giving their GPS system access away for free."
Uh, yeah they are. In fact, the only GPS system that exists is free. It's called the United States government and they provide GPS access free of charge. GPS 101.
A GPS receiver, regardless of whether it's in a phone, PDA, or as a standalone device, is fully capable of receiving data free of charge from GPS satellites. The quandary brought forth in this thread has not to do with access to "GPS systems" as put forth, rather access to the device itself.
I think the gripe that I am seeing here is that Cingular has disabled (ie crippled) the device in order to force (railroad) the customer into to paying for a pricey software subscription/device access fee. The problem is that 3rd party software is available much cheaper, and that since Cingular has disabled the native GPS functionality of the phone, they have effectively eliminated consumer choice. Which sounds like a very legitimate complaint to me.

Hi, where can I find out what cell phones will be released by Cingular in the upcoming months? I know the iPhone is a big deal and thats June, but when will I know if Cingular will pick up a Samsung-D807 like successor. I like the phone but when I upgrade my plan (July) I want something newer, not the D807 I first saw online in Dec 2005. I also have a huge gripe with the text messaging and data plan charges, which makes me want to grab a chocolate or enV and one of Verizons cheap texting plans when I need to upgrade. I see the Chocolate already has upgrades being installed. I wanted a Blackberry Pearl until I saw you guys want 29.99 a month or 39.99 a month with 1000 messages just so I can use the darn thing. What gives? Why does Cingular charge so much for texting and data and still fail to tell us customers what we have to look forward to in upcoming months?

about the only way is at the website for new phones...
generally spaeking BB's data plans are more expensive than a regular data plan regarless of carrier... BB's use their own servers for data instead of the carriers... the carrier passes this cost to the customer

Why doesn't Cingular pick up the D900? What about the Samsung U600 10.9 Ultra? Do you happen to know their criteria for picking which cellphones to offer and which ones to skip over? I am not impressed with Cingulars line up, but they do have a lot to offer businesses with all their PDA/ Smartphones.

no...cingular at present uses 1900 mhz for UMTS service

Cingular also uses the 850 MHz band in most markets. At first only 1900 was used because of the phone (cu320), but now offers dual band on their network using both UMTS & HSDPA (UMTS & HSDPA are being rolled out side by side), and some phones have the ability to use the 2100 MHz band when traveling overseas.
To Unregistered: I'm not entiredly sure of how or why Cingular picks the models they do, but I'm sure it has alot to do with cost, features and the ability of each model to pass first the FCC and then internal testing. I would expect the majority of the phones coming out in the future to have both mp3 players and 3G access.

yes cingular does utilize the 850mhz band but not for UMTS... a UMTS connection (data) is only possible on a 1900mhz tower...if the device is on 850 mhz tower the data connection "dummies" down to an EDGE or GPRS connection

You are going to need at least the 29.99 Blackberry plan. Even though it's only media net, it still will not show up on the phone unless you get the BB plan.

Cingular has not disabled GPS on the hw6925. I have the hw6925 through Cingular and my GPS works fine. I don't subscribe to their plan. The way GPS works is that you must have GPS software loaded on the device and when you open it up then the GPS is activated. The GPS signal is free, but to use GPS, you need maps....and most maps are not free. You either have to subscribe to a service where you can access the maps online or you have to purchase maps.
With the subscription service, you do not store maps on your device. Every time you access them, you are accessing them online.
When you purchase maps, you usually also purchase software that you'll use. When you wish to use GPS on your device, you will open up the software, fix on a GPS signal and use the maps which you have downloaded and installed on your device. Maps usually start around $100.
There are some free maps you may be able to get (like Microsoft's Pocket Streets), but these maps are inferior to the ones you purchase. Google provides a free GPS service (which uses your device's GPRS signal to access the maps - so you'll need to have a data plan through Cingular).

Upstate NY in the area you described is mainly partner coverage
( http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/ )
if your service is prepaid coverage will be spotty at best
unless you connect to a ATT tower.. if you are on a contract plan try power cycling your phone to get a fresh registration...if there is no signal... well there is no signal...
at present ATT is not licensed for those areas that show as partner... there are roaming agreements with other carriers in place but are rate plan *type* dependant (prepaid cannot roam postpaid or contract account can)

hey at&t will tell you you need the 39.99 pda connect plan because it has a full key board and they consider it a pda, when it runs a smart phone OS. both the 19.99 and 39.99 provide the same pdpwap apn which the phone needs in order for the phone to connect to the internet the only difference is price and the name. so instead of paying 39.99 for less add the smart phone connect 19.99 and then 19.99 unlimited text and it will work fine, and if they wont put it on the account do it on the web it will allow you to add it. and you can even use the 19.99 smart phone plan to use the phone as a modem through the blackjacks internet sharing feature, great thing is it's all unlimited.
p.s. if they say they track it believe me they don't it's just to scare you, so many people do it,

ok another question. i want to buy a blackjack from a friend thats not under contract. once i get the phone activated with a plan, will it become under a 2 year contract? would i freely be able to switch plans at the end of the month, or would i have to be stuck with that plan for 2 years? because i want to take advantage of the rollover minutes: buy a lot of minutes the first month then rollover so i can get the cheapest plan

just by adding the phone to the account you will not have to update your contract that's only if you do a upgrade at the store or online.

I'm considering buying a blackjack but i'm a little confused by at&t's plans. Basically, i want to get unlimited internet and unlimited text messaging. But which plan would i have to get with the blackjack: the MEdia Max Unlimited Bundle for $39.99 OR the Smartphone Connect plan for $19.99 and pay the extra $19.99 for unlimited text messaging? What's the difference between the Media plans and the smartphone connect plans?
the data plans are device dependant the smartphone plans are designed for a phone that uses winmobile as an OS, the medianet plans are for all others except Blackberries whih have their own data plan

I just got of the phone with an AT&T rep without getting a good answer...
I'm out of contract and just got an unlocked Nokia E65, I asked the rep what data plans were available for me. Since the E65 can't run 3G here in US I can only connect through GSM/GPRS, same as iPhone for example.
Anyway...
Initially I was told there was an unlimited MediaNet plan for $19.95/month (on top of voice plan) and a "PDA" unlimited plan for $39.95 (on top..)... I asked what the difference was and after a while I was told I there was only the unlimited PDA plan for $39.95 available for my phone. I could not use the $19.95 MediaNet plan according to the rep.. confusing.
Anyone know what this MediaNet plan is and why I can't get it?
Thanks!

what the rep told you was correct...
there are 2 unlimited plans...
the PDA plan is for PDA's and the medianet plan is for phones the difference is the access point and proxy... PDA's are vastly different in the way they handle data than a wap enabled phone...you can (technically speaking) use the medianet plan on a pda but if discovered in a maitenance sweep ... data service can be denied as a result.. the PDA version of the plan has a different access point and proxy than a phone (wap enabled device) and the PDA generally will work better when its set up right...
whether you are in an edge area or a UMTS area is irrelavent to the equation the relavent factor is the device in use
from what you are describing you had called to enquire about data... the rep answered the question... found out that you had a device that required a PDA data plan and corrected her/himself...(so far correct "procedure") what he/she didnt know was why there is 2 different types data plans for voice devices thats why there are different rate plans for blackberries and they will not work on the data side without it

dear sir let me tell you the truth the difference between the two packages is nothing. at&t charges 39.99 to PDA phones which they say are phones with full keyboards (not counting blackberrys), the 19.99 media net plan is for the smart phones and regular cell phones. let me tell you the truth inorder to use the phones internet you need pdpwap on at&t's back end system. as long as you have that you can use the internet on the phone with the wap settings which with nokia's you can send the settings to your phone if it's unlocked other wise there already on the phone. both the media net plan and pda plan include pdpwap in the back end the only difference is the new pda plan includes 1500 text messages and the media net one doesn't. now that's the true if you don't believe me add the 19.99 media net plan on the account and use the internet all you want you will not be charged for 1 KB, you can even look at the bill the day after and all data usage will be listen under the unlimited section. trust me it does work i'm not lying anyone that reads this can do it you can check other websites out there they'll all say the same thing, all tech geeks already found it out. don't go by what this cingular rep says it's not true. hey if you're charged for it i'll pay your bill i promise.
truth again

and there are not data sweeps they tell customers to scare them so that they don't tether the device the wrong way don't listen to that. plus you can use the 19.99 media net feature to tether you just have to use the wap settings not the isp settings.

I'm thinking about switching to Cingular and getting the Samsung Blackjack. I've read a lot of reviews and think I like the Blackjack the best. I notice that you had mentioned in one of the replies that there was a 29.99 unlimited data plan, which I didn't see on Cingular's website. The only one I saw was 44.99 for unlimited data. Is there something different I should know about those 2 plans? Does the 29.99 plan provide unlimited internet and email access?

the 29.99 smart phone all plan includes text but you can put the 29.99 smart phone plan or the 19.99 media net plan you can add them through the website and you don't have to put the 39.99 pda package on it or anything high then 29.99 they all work the same

I can asure you that att does pull a sweap on it's apns and if it shows that a pda device which should be a apn 3 has a apn 1 then the system will disable it.

truth is not wrong truth is right. how do i know you ask, it's because i'm the guy that checks it, all we really do is not support the customer if they are tethering with the media net packages or if there using them on a pda we usually just tell them that the reason it wont work is because they have to have the correct plan but it does still work. and as far as the apns we really just have two for the pda's, pdpwap and isp.cingular. the wap or pdpwap is used for the cell phones browsers all the settings are named with wap and the isp is used mostly on the wireless cards and tethering packages. now the pda packages came with both apns but now the new pda package only comes with pdpwap apn on the backend. so no matter if you pay 39.99 or 19.99 you still get the pdpwap apn which is used to access the internet on any at&t phone if you use to much data you just look like a consumer with to much time on your hands looking at way to many websites. as far as the checking we don't remove the feature or cancel the service we just don't support you sorry.

Just to let you know...when you buy a high plan for say 3 months and accumulate RO minutes and hten decide to change your plan...the rollover doesn't go with you. When you move up or down in a rate plan the Roll over minutes will drop to the equivalent amount of the new plan. EX//
You are on a Nation 59.99 900 mins and you have 1000 Roll over minutes and go to the 39.99 450 mins the begining of the next cycle you will have the 450 in the plan and then 1000 rollover you had before will only be 450 so instead of having 1450 mins that month you only get 900.

to put the settings on the phone you have to create a new profile in the internet settings page, and just add the AT&T settings which you can find all over the net. also a sim is a sim doesn't matter if it's one of the old sims or a new 3G sim it is still going to work fine, the only difference is the 3G sims help the 3G phones connect to that network.

You can go to Samsung's website, or google for an answer. As long as the phone has the correct bands, you'll have access.

thats not true. some of the older phones will not work with a 3g sim. examples: nokia 1100 will only work with a 32k sim, lg 1400 and 1500 had alot of problems with the 3g sim untill they released the newer lgs with updated software. the older ones would only work with 32k and 2g 64k sims.

If your phone is unlocked, not AT&T branded, we do not guarantee that the internet will work on your phone, even if it is a GSM phone. To get the correct settings, call customer care, however, if your phone doesn't have the correct software, we may not be able to walk you through it as software versions vary.

I am am getting ready to renew my contract & do the new phone thing. We have 3 phones on the family plan & we were thinking of adding the $30 unlimited text feature, but my wife & I both would prefer a QWERTY keyboard but right now the only phones available with those are the smartphones which require you to also get the media plan or whatever its called. Any chance you guys will be getting a "texting phone" in the near future? I heard rumors that at the end of Febuary or beginning of March you were getting something like the LG Rumor that Sprint offers. Any insight on this would be great, we presently have 3 Motorola V557 & we are not very fond of them & the sooner we can get rid of them the better. They would only be "kind of" bad if they charged on a regular basis, but you only have a 50-50 shot that it will charge overnight.
Thank you!

I know Verizon has most of the landlines underground so I was thinking they must have some type of contract with the metro rail system or sumthin like that lol. Thanks for you help in this matter and ans everyones questions on this forum :)

You can thank Verizon (Bell Atlantic Mobile) for signing an exclusive deal with the DC Metro (WMATA) system back in the early 90's. The new plan is to have a new wireless sytem built that would be run by a third party (maybe Foxcom) and have ALL the carriers plug into this system. DC Metro wants a lot of rent and part of the carrier's airtime revenue so they are still going round and round with this. Hopefully someday they can resolve this.

for the n95 yes...activate the phone and then call customer care and ask for it...also... even tho you are starting service and using your own device (a COAM activation) there will be a contract... at bare minimum take one of the free phones... keep it in case the nokia fails
for the iphone if you dont have a data plan your visual voice mail wont work...as well 1st gen devices arent for sale anymore... the 2nd gen have to have the data plan or they wont activate
if you get the tilt with no data plan you wont get the rebate

I'm a Cingular Rep and am willing to help answer any reasonable questions you have.
Rules:
1. I can not and will not access your account for you through email.
2. There is no stupid question. Alot of people are new to Cingular and they shouldn't be bashed as all carriers operate different.
3. Do not ask me how to get out of a contract. If you want out, pay the ETF.
4. Keep this thread civilized. If you don't have anyting productive to say, don't say anything at all.
You don't have to say how to get out of contract, but I can ^_^

my family is thinking about switching to att, and recently a sales rep at my local store said that calif. state employees get a 15-17% discount off the monthly bill. what he didn't say (and i forgot to ask) was how that 15-17% was calculated. the person at the verizon store said that their discount was calculated from the base price of the monthly contract, so if a plan is 69.99 for 2 lines, the base would be 60. the % is taken off the 60, and the 9.99 per extra line is added onto that.
i was wondering if att does the same thing, or if its a simple % off the total monthly bill.
thanks.

With AT&T employee discounts, the %15-20 comes off the total amount of the bill. So if your bill is $150, you get %15 off that.

I have telenav with AT&t and I can't live without it, literally. I have had a Garmin nuvi 750 and TomTom GO 720, and Telenav literally has at least twice the POI. I remember those expensive map updates too, telenav has FREE map, poi, voice, etc updates. I first saw TeleNav mentioned in the New York Times and then I went to their website:telenav.com $10/month is a great deal, especially considering it offers more features than a $600 standalone unit.

Been with ATT a month, now going to new mexico next week. I see coverage is by Partners in the Roswell area. Does that mean it would be roaming charges? Also, how would I know if I was roaming on a system where I would be charged a minute rate? Can you force the phone not to roam? I know ten years ago I could set my Sprint phone to not roam. (Now have Nokia 5800 & Samsung Impression). Thanks for any help-
