Boost HTC Diamond antenna/reception

Does anyone know of what to do in order to boost or get a better antenna reception with the HTC Diamond. I have one and there are certain open space places where the phone doesnot have reception and the batterry life decreases because the phone is looking for service. Also, does anyone know how to improve battery life? Thank you
